U2's Glastonbury set to be broadcast live by Setanta Ireland.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0620/breaking110.html
U2’s first ever appearance at Glastonbury is to be broadcast live on Setanta Ireland.

The Glastonbury festival is broadcast by the BBC in the UK, with its commercial wing BBC Worldwide distributing content internationally.

On Friday, BBC Two will begin broadcasting U2's headline set from 10pm, until Newsnight begins at 10.30pm, Coverage of the event will move to BBC4 before switching back to BBC Two shortly after 11pm.

“The band were keen that an Irish broadcaster would show it uninterrupted,” a spokesman for Setanta said.

“We are delighted that U2 have allowed us to bring this live event to an Irish audience, with these channels involved over 1.3 million Irish homes will have access to U2 at Glastonbury.”

The band’s manager, Paul McGuinness, said “U2 fans across Ireland wanted to watch the Glastonbury show. We're fortunate that Setanta and the BBC have agreed to deliver uninterrupted coverage across the country.”

Wonder if it will be part of their "freeview" line up????

Since over 85% of people in Ireland get BBC2 and it's free (maybe 90%+), and hardly anyone paying for Setanta is this a serious attempt?

Is setanta Ireland on Analogue UPC??? It may be, BBC 4 is not. Also coverage of Glastonbury by the BBC is wall to wall.

So Setanta have finally given up, they can't get any sport worth showing so they're going to show us a bit of music!

Think U2 is on beeb anyway...

BBC 1 and 2 perhaps but not 4.
Setanta just give up now. Absolute joke of a channel.

They need to reinvent themselves. The need a Free To Air option and other genre specific channels. But their current offer isn't worthwhile. We need the jobs its no time to give IMO.

But hasn't that always been one of the more foolish moves Setanta has made down the years. They'd purchase the Rights to an event that was either on the BBC or ITV for free.

Reinvent themselves? Setanta Ireland is supposed to be a sports channel and I suspect anyone paying €16 for the service will be a bit annoyed by this.

Confirmed. U2 will be "FTA" in that you won't have to pay to subscribe to Setanta to receive it. All Sky people will get it!

Can't agree with this. The are way cheaper than Sky and generally are willing do to deals. I have it for over a year now and have never paid more than €7.50 pm. Getting access to Premier games on a Sat at 3 pm is great plus I get to see more LOI action. Unlike other companies they have ploughed in a lot of cash into Irish football with the Setanta Cup.

Fair enough but any sport channel that shows a live concert is a sport channel that has run out of things to show.

And for those of you who have BBC HD it will be on that as well.

In fairness RTÉ and TG4 both show LOI.

Even by not showing U2 on Setanta Ireland for a few hours doesn't take from the fact that Setanta Ireland is supposed to be a sports channel :D

There reinvention would be better by doing more than just a once off broadcast of U2. There are many people that are on UPC that don't pay that extra bit for Setanta Ireland and there are even more people with access to the PayTV service over this weekend then ever before, if I was paying €16 a month I would be more annoyed with that than what they are broadcasting.
And for those of you who have BBC HD it will be on that as well.

Will it be on Setanta HD?

While I'd agree to a certain extent, they're probably getting those rights cheap enough because they're FTA on BBC or ITV.

imo they should bite the bullet and go FTA on other platforms - for example saorview. Is there a market for more niche sports? Not sure on cost of rights, but to cover the stuff that eurosport also has (that doesn't seem to be exclusive) such as cycling and snooker?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

this is why setanta is not making money. they are spending money on stuff like this that 80-90% of the people that want to watch it can see elsewhere either for free on bbc/utv or skysports.
someone should tell them to get a proper business plan in place like skysports and get exclusivity not re-broadcasts of free to air stuff.

I see everybody badmouthing Setanta for this but I'm a massive U2 fan and am over joyed that they are doing this.

I'd been looking to see how this would be Broadcast, then I saw it was on BBC2 from 10:00pm to 10:30pm, the band not scheduled on stage until roughly 10:15pm and this would cut out mid song at 10:30pm. It would then switch over to BBC4 for a while (which you can't Sky +) before returning to BBC2 later in the set.

I don't have HD so BBCHD wasn't an option to me and Setanta are showing the full gig uninterrupted with no ads. So that's the one I'll be watching. Fair play to Setanta.

BBC 4 was added to the Sky EPG a few weeks ago.

What do other sport channels do when there isn't a live sporting event? Do Sky Sports or Eurosport show concerts?

Maybe Setanta Sports can show other programming when there is no live sport. How about Fawlty Towers or Mr Bean.

It is difficult for Setanta Ireland to have a pay market in Ireland when many of the sports are on competing channels from a far larger country who tend to buy rights for both Irish and British audience in particular Pay TV channel such as Sky Sports. Setanta is left with the remains of non-Pay TV sports coverage such as the Rugby WC which will air on ITV and left out of the major Pay TV sports coverage. Why didn't Setanta get Irish rights for the US open? It was able to get full masters coverage (which doubled Setanta Ireland's audience share).

Setanta need to think about at least 1 channel on FTA platforms, Setanta Ireland seems the most ideal, but it will loose the revenue it receives from UPC and Magnet for that channel, but they could always replace it with Setanta Sports 1.

There is plenty that they can do but for PayTV they need stronger live sports.

I hope that they are able to turn it around after all Setanta isn't just an Irish broadcaster.

    I'm a huge U2 fan.
Plenty of other channels to watch if ye aren't interested.
Say what you will about U2,they are one of Ireland's most famous exports.

Not at all. I am simply questioning why a supposed sports channel is resorting to this kind of programming.

Argh. Some people seem to think "I'll post my thread in satellite, cause more people will see it there, no matter what the subject actually is about". Post in the relevant forum and don't cross-post!

Moved to Broadcasting and merged with your other thread. Its on UPC too and isn't a satellite issue (although agreed, Sky viewers who don't otherwise have Setanta will see it free, wheras all UPC viewers have Setanta Ireland anyway).

As for the topic, well apparently U2's management put a clause in the contract for this stating that the BBC had to offer rights to an Irish broadcaster. Setanta bought the rights. Yes its not strictly a sporting event. Setanta have huge gaping holes in their schedule during the summer anyway so I don't begrudge them wanting to fill it with this. They'd probably be showing repeats (which is what their schedule will largely consist of until August) in this time slot anyway.

    FTA.

Not FTA, FTV actually, if Setanta's normal Freeview rules would go by. You'd need a Videoguard reciever and active viewing card to view the programme. In reality that means a Sky Digibox and active Sky digital subscription. Although appartently such thing as a Setanta FTV card does exist... http://www.setanta.com/ie/Join-Now1/Satellite/SATELLITE-FAQS/#9 . Why anyone would bother getting one is another question.

Rights issues would prevent it going out FTA usually. I'd imagine the BBC would be particulary keen this broadcast be FTV rather than FTA.

Actually I posted in Satellite as I was interested in finding out if people with FTA satellite would pick up Satanta Freeview hours, which is actually a satellite question, I should have started out in Satellite as the question bares more relevance there

Which leads me back to my issues about Setanta getting the Sound and Vision fund when viewers need a FTV Card/Setup to receive their "FreeView" hours, which mainly consist of licence fee funded programming.

On UPC the concert is available on Setanta HD, but you can't record it. They have put a block on the UPC+ HD box. It can be recorded on the Setanta SD channel though.

Sure if Setanta are showing U2 why not let RTÉ News Now broadcast Oxygen.
RTÉ 2fm has announced details of its most extensive coverage of the Oxegen festival, which this year will feature an integrated radio, web and TV production live from the festival for the first time.

The station's Oxegen website will feature video interviews, acoustic sessions, webcam streams and video blogs, which will also appear on RTÉ Ten, RTÉ.ie, RTÉ 2fm's Youtube channel, and, for the first time, on RTÉ Television via News Now, the new 24 rolling news channel.

RTÉ 2fm will also be providing almost 30 hours of live music on radio from the festival, which takes place at Punchestown Racecourse, Co Kildare from 8 to 10 July.

Fans can avail of an online, seven-day catch-up service of performances from the main stages.

RTÉ 2fm's coverage begins on Friday 8 July with Ruth Scott and Paddy McKenna broadcasting live from the festival, with Cormac Battle, Dave Fanning, Jenny Greene, Dan Hegarty and Jenny Huston also presenting and interviewing the stars over the course of the weekend.

Setanta are providing an FTA service tonight not just U2.

    RWC 2007 STARTS NOW
    FOLLOWED BY U2 AT 10
AND THEN ARSENAL V MUFC at 12

All "freeveiw" according to UPC EPG.

Very true, yet is seems that those who dislike U2 are quite vociferous & perhaps a little too over-exuberant when it come to express what comes across as utter hatred of the band, rather than "I'm not bothered". Perhaps it may be Neil Diamond & Mary Burn as Setenta's next foray into the live concert business & just to keep everyone happy Jedward:D

'Twas a big ad for Setanta Sports, as they announced up coming events on the service through out the concert. I was wondering why they didn't go the whole hog and broadcast all of Glastonbury.

Interesting perhaps this is the IFB way of starting to air on Saorview? or if I was cynical, more and more Sound and Vision funding going towards Setanta.
