Richard Molloy(aka Max_Damage) Memorial Road Run - Aug 21, Departs 1130, Location TBC

As most of you know, on 6th of May, Richard Molloy, (aka max_damage) a valued member and great contributor passed away in tragic circumstances.

I've been in discussion with both the lads on everyfordireland.com and his mother with regard to organising a road run as a tribute to his memory.

We would like to see it as an open invitation to members of all forums where he contributed.

No dates, routes or locations have been finalised, so I'd welcome member's suggestions in order to reach a compromise for maximum attendance.

I have however been thinking about routes and remember a post of his on e.f.i. where he had driven to Rosslare from his home in Dublin, taking in the scenic route and the picturesque countryside.
I was thinking that it would be rather fitting if we were to re-track this route as he had done himself two years previous.
This is just a thought and I welcome all suggestions.

Route sounds good to me ie. Start at Mortons pub or Delaneys pub both Firhouse, and up and over the featherbeds/military road and down through sally gap rathdrum etc ?

good idea. Like many here, im sure, I didnt know the guy personally, but liked reading his posts on here and in the classics forum.

Ok, I'm going to suggest first weekend in August as a date for this.
I feel if it was any sooner it would be too soon after the Portlaoise meet.

What do people think? Any suggestions?

That route mentioned sounds good. Perhaps we could have a mid-point stop where people who aren't interested in doing the full run could break off. This would also serve for non-Dublin members to join up without having to travel to the beginning in Dublin.

Is there any record of the route he took ?

On second thoughts he may have gone down through Blessington, Baltinglass, Tullow Enniscorthy, Wexford town and Rosslare.

This would suit country lads better.

Good idea to have break off/meetng points.

I think early sept would be better at this stage with everything else that's going on in the summer, but we'll see what the consensus is.

First weekend in August appears to be out of the question. It clashes with the Neal Egan run in Sligo.

How about the last weekend in August?

    @ Bigus,

quoting one of max_damage's posts from e.f.i. :
Being such a nice day today, and not having much to do, I decided to go for a drive, basically where ever the roads took me. Anyway, I firstly went through the Wicklow Mountains (through Sally Gap, Roundwood, etc.), into Wicklow town, and then onto Rosslare Harbour. Couldn't really go any further than there without going on the ferry to France! biggrin.gif

Anyway, I took a few pictures of my travels, they're all quite random pictures though! I also took a few pictures of my Escort, and a few other classics along the way.

Excellent David09 great you found that, fantastic Pics he took.

he took the first route so, but if it was modified to go inland towards Rathdrum at Laragh where he took the pic of the river meeting the lake at De Bruns land instead of out towards the main road roundwood may suit southern lads better.

Any chance of creating a google maps link to a route?

    I'm directionally dyslexic!!

Lads, if you've ever read Max Damage's posts in the " Today I saw a classic and took a photo" thread in the classics forum, then surely theres only one place this run can start from, the Nutgrove Shopping Centre carpark, his happy hunting ground for spotting classics:)

I'll join in no problem. You'll be going past my house anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

Just out of curiosity, there's no limit on what type of car is used like Classic Fords or anything, is there? I'd love to do the drive, obviously in memory of Max_Damage, but I'd also love to get the roads and views in!

I ask because people might be annoyed by a modified car :o

I don't think it will matter much tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭David09

My own view would be to try get as many 60's, 70's and 80's cars out in force, as "common-but-now-obsolete" as possible, just like what he would have photographed and appreciated himself. Mk3 escorts and 80's nissans would be ideal.
I guess modified stuff wouldn't matter as long as most cars are as described above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

If there's a problem I don't mind sitting it out, honestly.

I think between the films and bands listed, folks might have enough to put together a nice soundtrack for the drive:

    http://molloy86.webs.com/aboutme.htm

"Favorite bands: Dire Straits, Fear Factory, Pantera, Sepultura, Eric Clapton, Serj Tankian, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tito & Tarantula, Oasis, RHCP, The Shadows, Garbage, Guns 'N Roses, SOAD, Metallica, Buckethead, CCR, among others.

Favorite films: Falling Down, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Clerks, Ronin, The Wild Geese, The Commitments, Blues Brother, Mad Max"

The more ordinary, 80s and obsolete the better, I feel I should take a Datty up but it's a hella long spin up from Kerry.

probably be approriate if I took the 1990 Sierra rather than a Cortina in that case.

Probably! I know he would have got more of a kick out of the Sierra than the Corty.

We need to finalise the date and route.

I have someone who is looking into getting us a good deal on refreshments and parking space should we stop-off half way.
Another member is going to inform local gardai of the route chosen in case there are any traffic issues.

    .
If it on route why not the Ashford house car park. Nice and big and easy to get in and out of

Who's on for Sunday August 21st?????

If somebody calls the place and asks to speak to Patrick (the owner) he can close the car park the day before so it will be clear. He also owns the adjoining pub.

Won't kill to ask anyway and a nice enough guy. Before anyone asks me to call him I can hardly organise myself.......

Sounds like a good idea. Might bring my 1990 Gti considering the 'summer' we are having. Has anyone a link to the relevant thread in EFI to post here if that's allowed? ;)

I don't know if it's been pointed out before but the image used on the Wikipedia page for the grey 80s Micra was actually Max Damage's Micra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭David09

August 21st as a final date...

@ frada, thanks for that. I think he also uploaded a pic of a black 93 sierra sapphire to wikipedia. It was taken in the same location as the micra and was his parents former car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

He also uploaded this classic on Youtube with nearly 11 millions views.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

Should be ok for this gig - probably go in the 735 as a round trip to Rosslare would be a tad expensive on the T/A.

I think starting off in Nutgrove SC is a must!!!!

Maybe this has been mentioned already but we could throw a few bob a head into a bucket on the day for a relevant charity. €5 / €10 each maybe?

It was suggested that we could have a donation of €10 per car taking part, regardless of how many people the car contained...

Funny, I can see an old car of mine in one of his photo's at Rosslare Harbour.

I might not drive this, but I'll probably come along as a passenger.

I can't make it, but I'd be happy to throw a few quid towards whatever charity is chosen - by paypal maybe?

    Define "Relevant Charity!"

Not knocking it, but such a run should have a purpose/goal, be it to raise funds for a Charity or raise awareness for a cause.

    That's why I said 'relevant'! :)

Just saying "relevant" is too vague.

Why are you making an argument about this? I'm happy to participate on the run and donate a few bob to charity - I'm not really too pushed which charity it is. I said 'relevant' because I don't know how Richard died.
