Cannot shift weight

    Hi all,

To start with, I am female, 5'9" and weigh 159lb. My target is 145lb.

I started a diet in January when I weighed 178lb. I got 20lb off but the weight loss has just stopped the last few weeks.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week (I mostly do the elleptical machine for 45 mins- 1 hour) and eat between 1200-1500 calories a day.
The only day I relax it is on a Friday where I go out for a few drinks (vodka and Diet coke) and usually go to the chipper at the end of the night.

Where am I going wrong?? I have thought of stopping the Friday night out but it's the only real chance I get all week to let loose- I feel like I'm counting calories and sweating on a machine all the rest of the time!

I dieted before (168 to 151lb over 3 months) and the weight fell off solidly every week. However, at that time, I pretty much gave up bread for the entire thing. I eat bread every day at the moment- is it possible it's the bread? I thought that calories in VS calories out was the main thing.

Kcals are way too low imo, and probably impeding weight loss. Especially given that you're training so much.

Also, what's the split like between protein, carbs and fat?

Well I get plenty of carbs and protein- breakfast is cereal with whole milk and a fruit salad, lunch is a chicken salad sandwich and dinner is usually chicken and raw veg/salad (I love my greens raw!). I eat snacks as well like the odd bar of chocolate or crisps so I'm sure there's fat in there! But I mainly focus on calories.

    Hiya...
It could be a few things combined here...

Still eating bread,,so that's a lot of Carbs still..also depends on what time your eating them. You may be better trying to get your carbs in early in the day,and taper off as you go along.

You still Snack? What exactly are the snacks? Good healthy ones? And,,you should really put a bit more effort into cutting out,,or way down on the chocolate, and crisps..

The salads,,,Are they home made? Is there mayo etc in them? It all adds up. Maybe whole milk isn't the best thing?

Maybe your routine has become exactly that....Routine...Your body may have adapted to it...So it could be time for a change.

The drinks are ok,,Depending on how many your having..Same with the chipper...It's all calories..And they all add up..

If you insist on keeping the chipper food,,try it on different nights...Once again,it's down to routine,,and your body will adapt to it.

Do you keep a food diary? If not,,try it for one week. And be honest,,Write down EveryThing..You might be surprised what you find.

    Hope this helps..

Yeah I could try that maybe.

The snacks are sometimes fruit and sometimes popcorn or chocolate, but never so much as to go over my calorie limit- I thought that as long as I was under my calorie limit it would be OK.

Yeah, the salad I have for dinner is home made, there is usually mayo in the chicken salad sandwich I have at work.

I do keep a food diary, yeah, I find it really helps as it really hammers home how much I eat. I am taking your advice on changing things up. Instead of 5/6 hours of the elleptical this week I am going to try the BodyPump weights classes and some aerobics instead, even just to try and use different muscles and see if it makes any difference.
I also took tonight off from the gym, to relax on a Monday night for a change.

Is it really true that too little calories/too much exercise can PREVENT weight loss? I thought starvation mode was a myth and that as long as calories out > calories in, I would lose weight.

The writer mentions cortisol, I've been wondering if that is the cause of my problem for a while now. I'm doing a LOT of cardio and am very stressed about the weight loss stalling. I'm beginning to wonder if I should cut the exercise right down this week and see if that helps.

You can only try.....Maybe a few gentle walks in the evenings,or whenever your free might make a difference.

Personally,,I still think your eating way too much chocolate, and crisps...It's empty calories, and you just don't need them.

A point to remember here,is any good bodybuilder would tell you that to lose weight sucessfully the key is their diet..And,,at that,,it's 80% of their sucess. I know your probably not looking for bodybuilding, but,I'm just using it as a point.

If you haven't already hunted and searched the internet for ways to burn body fat,,etc...I have 1 or 2 things that I downloaded before, and your welcome to have them.

They may be a bit "extreme" though...(you won't be having chocolate or crisps on these). ;)
