Arthroscopic knee surgery and arthritis!!!!!

    Hi,
I tore my cartillage and cruciate 10 years ago and had them repaired separately. I had some cartillage removed. I've never returned to full time sport. I hurt it a few months ago and it was sore for a few weeks .I'm due to have arthroscopic knee surgery again shortly as the surgeon wants to flush it out as my mri showed cartillage wastage and arthritis.I've been told by surgeon pointless repairing my cruciate again if not playing sport.

However I'm having second thoughts now as my knee has settled down and isn't painful. It is unstable but I mind myself and it doesn't flare up. Occasionally it will swell slighly due to excessive walking or standing all day. It's just a mild discomfort.

My knee never funtions properly(can't twist or turn quickly) but this surgery will not fix that. It's been lke this for at least 6 years.I'm just unsure do I really need to have the op and have to rehabilate my muscles after. . I mean if I have arthritis in my knee then I'm always going to have discomfort and if my cruciate is torn my knee will always be unstable. Anyone have any experience with this problem. Thx:)

Remember - no medical advice please. Like the OP asked, your own experiences if related to the OPs.

i had the same op about 8 years ago and often get fluid on the knee etc.
i have a lump sticking out the outside of my knee all the time but recently tried exercising it and seems to help a lot.
    try lunges ,footstepper etc.
get it fixed otherwise a knee replacement is not too far way.

    Hi Bazmak,
Thanks for your swift reply. You see originally I got it all fixed but unfortunately it hasn't been successful. I did my rehab fairly well but being young I probably didn't do as much as I should have.

The problem now is surgeon reckons little point in repairing cruciate. He did mention knee replacemnt when older but he said because I now have arithis in knee I will need it anyway.

My point is my knee has settled again, obviously it's a damaged knee but I have full flexibilty up and down just not twisting. Any occassional minor swelling or discomfort is most likely the artrithis.

So, as my knee is not bothering me that much is getting it flushed out pointless now. It's not going to fix anything. My cartillage is dissapearing anyway regardless. My knee not locking.

I'm thinking of working on strengtening my muscles and maybe leaving such an op until I really do need it if knee very painful.

Thanks a mill for your advice though. Cruciate is a rotten op. Hope your knee works out.:)

I see nothing more coming out of this thread that should be sought anywhere other than a medical professional. Closed.
