Yep there will be no linkys to Roms at all as i said
This will not contain Rom links Its illegal immoral and you will go to hell

All i want is a complete Emulator section for all the old systems even the extreme niche systems

Great idea Sparks though lately I'm avoiding emulation as I feel the purest lately and have even been playing Gameboy games on original hardware.

Megadrive for me would be GENS.

For the SNES it would be BSNES. However this emulator is every accurate so takes a beast of a machine to run. If you don't have a modern system go for ZSNES or SNES9x. SNE9x is probably the better of the two.

    Amiga is definitely WinUAE

I found XM6 much better than Winx68 for X68000 emulation.

Project Neko is the best PC-9801 emulator for me on the strength that it's the only one I got to work. It's a complete whore to set up and find bios roms for though.

X-millenium is the best Sharp X-1 emulator. Get the newest version, old versions don't support .tap files.

    Blue msx for msx
    ZX spin for spectrum.
    Magic engine for pc engine

    SSF for saturn

More current versions of snes9x I believe has sound emulation code done by the BSNES author, and doesn't have the zsnes dos graphics if your not fond of them.

Interesting to know. However a few games have emulation errors in SNES9x still such as the fan translation of both Shin Megami Tensei games so I'd still recommend BSNES if you can run it.

Thats the thing about many of the consoles I see emulated.
It made sense back in the late 90's to emulate MD and Snes as the machines were not really about, few people seemed to collect and it was an easy way to play the games we were playing only a few years before.
Now though the consoles are as cheap as chips and most of the games the same.
I'd always rather use the real deal than emulate, and if you want the best of both go for genuine hardware but perhaps an SD based solution?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's more that I don't find N64 emulation very accurate at all. Well it wasn't back when I tried it, not tried it in a while.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

No, I've tried numerous emus on many platforms and always found the N64 emu lacking, and with the N64 the controller was so integral to it's biggest titles, Mario64, Pilotwings, Superman ;) , to play without it is missing something.

Same goes for the MD and Snes, the controllers, the natural placing of the fingers, muscle memory directing your button and direction presses, be it Mario World or Sonic 2, Chronotrigger or Gunstar Heroes, the act of controlling your in-game avatar is part of the game before the game even begins, if you get my meaning.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well as long as it's playing the megadrive with the 6-button controller. Dug out the megadrive a few months ago and I forgot how horrible those kidney shaped 3 button controllers were.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭7sr2z3fely84g5

1964 is bit odd without the N64 controller, but ran pretty good on dual/quad core pc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I had Project 64 running quite nicely on my PC about a year ago, with improved graphics and using 360 pads. Most games ran perfectly, but without the N64 pad half of them were unplayable. Turok with the C buttons mapped to an analog stick was pretty good though.

Are the PS2 and Xbox emus actually able to run games at proper speeds yet? I haven't looked them up in a good while.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The games may run better with graphical improvements but it looks very different from playing the game on native hardware. I think the big thing is that the programmers try to improve the texture filtering and it makes everything too crisp looking. The N64 has unique texture filtering that looks very distinctive and designers worked this into the look of their game. Improving the filtering really accentuates how basic the games are while on the N64 it disguises it somewhat. The best emulator so far is the one on the Wii which emulates the texture filtering really well while replacing the horrible blur antialiasing of the original hardware with proper anti aliasing.

I thought so too, until I did a bit of investigation (and took a load of pads apart!)

There are many different variations of the 3 button pad dependant on when it was released. Some are crap, some are fantastic.

The early and mid release ones did not last the test of time. The D pad uses button rubbers which wear out.

The last ones though had a redesign that uses a plastic dome in the D pad and work as well now as they did when they first came out.

I didn't know they existed until picking up a very late release Megadrive 2 a year ago at a car boot sale. Both pads were amazing so I had to take them apart to see why. They are in fact nicer to use than the 6 button ones and worth hunting down.

A lot of the ZX Spectrum stuff is available legally now. A spectacularly amazing effort by the people involved with World Of Spectrum (www.worldofspectrum.org) actually contacted Amstrad (owners of the ZX Spectrum) and software houses.

Huge archive of the material available.

    See here: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/permits/

I hate MAME these days. I have every single Killer Instinct Ro-:D but when I try to audit none are recognised.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

My advice is to stick to older versions of mame. They run faster and aren't as picky about roms.

Cool. Could you recommend me a good one to play the aforementioned game?:) I spent the best part of this morning trying to find one that works with KI.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You sure you have the right roms? As far as I remember you need the roms files as well as a .chd hard disk image to play the game. Can't really recommend a version to use. You could use one of the killer instinct specific emulators such as U64.

Cheers thanks. No I didn't even know a .chd hd image was needed.

I use a 6-button "clone" Saturn USB pad.

One of the first batch so it's pretty solid.
Sadly, it's nowhere near as good as a SNES pad for non-fighters!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Find the saturn pad amazing for pretty much anything in 2D. The clone pads mustn't be as good as the real deal.

    Hello chaps,

Having a little issue running Gens in fullscreen. Works fine in windowed mode but fullscreen leaves me with a static image. I'm using Windows 7 64bit.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I've the same problem, I think it's down to the onboard graphicson my laptop.

Have you tried using Kega Fusion instead of Gens ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,287 ✭✭✭Doge

You could also try Gens+ mebbé.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭robvondoom

Hey Bandit. Yup, been using Kega Fusion up to this point. Swapped over to Gens as I had gotten the impression that it was superior in terms of accuracy of the emulation.

    Thanks waveform, I'll give Gens+ a go.

Well Gens+ won't start up unfortunately. Keep getting "Error: SetDisplayMode"
