I use Starflower oil and find it very effective, but you have to take it consistently for weeks/months to realise its full effect. Well worth it though.

+1 to giselle's. I found starflower oil brilliant.

Hi ladies- cut salt completely from your diet, and reduce wheat products- you should see a significant improvement immediately.

yes! water retention is significantly increased with a diet high in sodium,so opposite works: reduce sodium, and therefore, there will be less retention- Worked with me,and I used to have awful PMS.I have friends who had wicked period pains- completely went when they changed their diet-(I'm talking girls who ate painkillers monthly to get through their cycle and now need nothing- worth a try.
Also, food tastes fine without salt(with exception of chips which I'm not that mad about anyway, thankfully).

Actually that'd make sense, I hate salt and eat very little of it, I've never in my life experienced bad PMS or bloating etc.

In addition to diet, vitamins, and mineral supplements, consider strenuous daily exercise.

    Hi Sooopie,

My walking partner had suffered PMS for a long time now, and since we started our daily walks (4kms in mornings and 4kms in evenings) she has gradually improved.
We started walking in January, and now, 6 months later she is symptom free!
It has turned her life around, and her marriage too! And she has lost weight.
It's a brisk walk and takes about 50 mins each time.
Maybe a combination of being active and losing weight has helped my buddy.
Try it and see how you get on.
    :)

Calcium can ease symptoms in many cases but it's best to take it with magnesium to help absorption. Cal/mag supplements are easy to find and not very expensive. The one I take has vitamin D and zinc included.

    Hey Ladies!

Thanks for all your tips. I've gotten the calcium and vitamin D tablets, and cut down on salt. Along with the starflower oil, heres hoping I see an improvement! Thanks again. :)

    hot water bottle!

I've always found Evening Primrose Oil works wonders-its not just for menopause! Its very good for regulating periods, and eases cramps. Exercise is really the best thing though, helps with regulating menstruation and eases symptoms, plus it is a natural mood booster, so get out for a walk and some fresh air!!!

Definitely I think exercise is the best. Both physically and mentally is great.

Can be anything at all - like another poster said it is great walking.

Tbh I know a hot water bottle feels like the answer but it is not a solution - you are just masking the symptoms, not fixing them. And lying on the couch feeling sorry for yourself is not helping you either.

    Exercise! Woo hoo! try it!

Glad to hear you're feeling better :)
I suffered from extreme PMS up until very recently, like, seriously mental PMS. To the point of insanity. Cannot stress enough how bad it was.
I tried a good few combos of supplements to no effect, and the last time I was in with the doctor it was so bad she was advising me to start taking anti-depressants  which I didn't want to go down the route of, considering for 3 weeks out of 4 I was fine.

What eventually worked for me was - evening primrose oil, b vitamins, and magnesium. I also take an omega 3 supplement on top of that (partly to help with cholesterol, partly to help with mood), oh and folic acid just in case I ever manage to get pregnant. I cannot get over the difference! Seems the magnesium was the magic addition as I had tried the others in various combos (along with others such as agnus castus etc) over the years and nothing worked til I added in the magnesium.

Gone from having to plan my life around the few days I'd be welded to the bed in a fit of depression/pain/temper etc, to not even being "aware" that the time of the month is upon me :) All thanks to a tub of magnesium that costs about 3 quid a month. Just wish I had discovered that sooner, I'd have had a much easier few years. Wasn't till I read about it on another PMS thread on another forum that I even knew you could get magnesium supplements so thought I'd throw that suggestion out here in case anyone is looking for remedies for the aul PMS.

Glad to hear you're having a better time of it now yourself :)

The internet is a bloody wonderful thing. This post is exactly what I needed today, as here I am having a MASSIVE freakout day yet again as my hell week approaches.
Nothing I have tried has worked - I feel like a lunatic when my period is coming on. Those who haven't suffered just think I am being melodramatic, but I seriously feel mental for 2 weeks out of every month, the week before and during.
I'm going to pop out tomorrow and see if I can get magnesium. Hopefully it works just as well for me. :)

Can taking supplements help with moods? I've had terrible moods/ feeling upset before my period so is there something I could take for that?? Don't get any cramps tho.

Yes but you have to be careful of this around the time, without getting graphic Cinnamon thins blood (so you bleed more) & acts as a natural dieuretic. As someone who took up drinking 5 cups of green tea with cinnamon a day a few months ago I would strongly not taking cinnamon close to your TOM, I can't even begin to describe how awful the pain was. Best option is not to take it 2 days before your due and until you're finished in my opinion.

Holland and Barretts have a deal where you buy one, get another half price - for a bottle of 50, 1000mg strength costs around €15 (starflower oil), and I pick up calcium and mag tabs in tescos for around €2! :)
