With just over a month away we have 3 courses that can accommodate us on the 22nd. Moyvalley, Macreddin are free and Dundrum can give us times from 2-3.30

Thanks to Tin_Cup and David for helping us out with the first 2 and ssbob who contacted Dundrum

So you are voting for 2 things. Firstly, your preferred option and secondly to say you will attend even it's not your preferred choice.

    Poll with close today week.

    Course choice 74 votes

    Moyvalley
    0% 0 votes
    Macreddin
    17% 13 votes
    Dundrum
    37% 28 votes
Whatever course get's picked I'm playing
    44% 33 votes

Thanks for the great work so far Keano - brilliant effort! You'd want to be careful you don't get stuck with the job!!

I presume that's Dundrum House, just outside Cashel? If so, its a fine course - I've in-laws down there and play it reasonably regularly, so that would be my first choice. It'd only be a little under 2 hours from the M50 as well.

Happy to play all three though.:D

That's the one ya. It's actually fairly central for those travelling from all directions.

Macreddin is my choice, but I will still go wherever the gang goes

Ive gone for Dundrum, would suit me the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

I've voted Macreddin (Obvious choice!). Unfortunately I won't be in a position to play if it's in any of the other courses due to work committments.

Mods: Feel free to spoil my vote if it's strictly players only that can vote.

Dundrum is probably the best course on the list also. Very highly regarded. Ranked 51 in Best courses in Ireland in 2009 and when you take the links courses out of that its probably up in the top 35 park land courses in the country. I'v a friend who ranks it higher than a lot more well know courses. Great venue anyway IMO

No worries David but your vote still counts. Long way to go so Macreddin may win.

Thanks again for your help and offer. Hopefully, we can have another few outings and take advantage of your offer :)

dundrum gets my vote. On the motorway so more accessible to most people. Macreddin and Moyvalley and it's dubs only playing.

How about a ryder cup style event? Dubs V rest of the country? Depending on which region has the biggest turnout of course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭dwd

I voted Moyvalley, but should be able to make it to Dundrum as long as the tee time wasn't till after 3 as I won't be able to get away until 1, and I'm Dublin based. I know it might be a bit late but did anyone suggest Castlecomer, I was looking on google maps and it's as close to the middle of Dublin, Limerick, Cork as you could get. I can give them a ring tomorrow if ye want?

Don't mind Moyvalley and Macreddin as both would be reasonable drive but Dundrum would be at least 2.5-3 hour for me.

I be biased to say Macreddin as it's a 40mins drive for me. Dundrum GC is definitely on my list as to play but it's a long drive , I would need to stay overnight. Is anybody thinking of doing this?

    This is a great idea!!

I played Dundrum earlier in the year, the first box in front of the busy hotel restaurant at breakfast time was just lovely.
Shorter spin for me too if it comes off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

travelling from cork to macreddin would take 3.5 - 4hours i reckon. Wicklow is the worst county in ireland to get to from cork!!!

    Come on Dundrum!

It's a real pity Dundrum do not have tee times from 2:30 until 4:00 as the 3:30 end could leave it very tight for a lot of dubs on the day. If you leave work at 1 then you might have to be lucky in getting to the M50 exit within 30 minutes and then the rest of the journey only taking an hour and a half. Even at that you'll be fairly rushing out onto the course. You can often hit a bit of a lunchtime rush at Fridays in Dublin. It does look fantastic though and looks like it rewards accuracy and punishes any wide or wild shots.

Totally understand. I think the next one will have to be a Saturday. :(

Just pointing it out - I do not know how many people are coming from Dublin, but you may have to keep a lot of the 3:00 - 3:30 times available for them. As it turns out the 22nd is the only Friday in July where I can take a half day off and not a full day. Anyway - it would be great to get this up and running - it might even lead to a few more sociable games between those that head out that day. So keep up the good work Keano!

Actually nocal, I just read over the old thread. ssbob rang them and they said they should be able to fit us in between 2-30

I went for Dundrum but will also be a bit tight on time coming from Dublin....

For the record - I went for the "whatever course is picked I'll play" option. Reckon there is no way I'll be able to tee off before 3:00 at the earliest though (well maybe 2:50 if everything goes perfectly that day).

    Dundrum is good for me
Moyvalley and Macreddin are a bit of a spin and might struggle to get there due to work.

Anyone considered a course in the Kilkenny region at all as is somewhat central to all I think (if Dundrum turns out not to be a runner) ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭KOJAK_1

Good luck on this lads. Unfortunately 22nd does not suit me as I have a society outing on 23rd. Hopefully it all goes well and leads to further outings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Figo69

I'm getting all excited here. Dundrum GC seem to be the favourites but Macreddin GC is putting up a good dog fight here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭Corkblowin

I know theres still plenty of time to go in the poll, but it looks to be either Dundrum or Macreddin. Could I suggest that for fairness whichever course is the venue this time that the other be the venue for a second outing (assuming of course having all met we want another one!! :D )

I've voted Dundrum btw as its far more accessible for Cork than Wicklow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,724 ✭✭✭Vanbis

Not going to make this outing, i have society event on the 21st. Best of luck with this one and i hope to make the next one.

    I would've voted for Macreddin

    I seconded that suggestion.

Looking at the numbers we have over 20 for Dundrum and Macreddin and 9 who'll do either.

If that means 20-odd won't play if the wrong one is chosen (from their point of view obviously) then is there a case for having two on the same day - one in each venue ?

Just throwing it out there :D

One advantage of this is that we could do a Leinster v Munster ryder cup-style match later on that top number from each venue qualify for :D

Maybe in the future - but since the original idea was for a board golf outing splitting it into 2 venues would kind of defeat the purpose for the first few events - in my opinion anyway.

I'm in Cork so I've voted for Dundrum. Could make it there no prob but not the other two. At least not that day anyway. I've played there a couple of times and it is a super course.

I'd be in favour of that but it will have to be a Saturday and tee time for around 12 or 1

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Figo69

    Aye :)

With the date of the first outing picked and the voting for the venue underway should we start to thick about the format of the outing. Strokeplay / stableford / scramble

    Good question Terry.

Another issue is prizes. So much still do to :)

I reckon you can rule out strokeplay - we do all want to get home that evening. I presume we will be going out in fourballs so maybe a fourball better ball or a scramble would be a good idea. Or possibly even a waltz?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭Villain

I voted Moyvalley but hopefully will make any venue depending on work levels, I reckon single stableford although I'll play any format some players may feel under pressure playing team event with strangers especially people new to the game. It's one thing having a bad day it's another thing having a bad day and letting down partner/s

Think scramble is the best idea imo but doesnt bother me really.

    Think 1 score counts on Par5, 2 scores Par4 and 3 scores on Par3

a waltz is one to count on the 1 st. two to count on the 2 nd , three to count on the 3 rd , one to count on the 4 th, 2 on the 5 th 3 on the 6 ... 1..2..3..

    Um nice variation

the 1 to score on a par 5, 2 on a par 4 and 3 on a par 3 might be better. Or the number of players to score could be based on the hole index with more players to score on the easier holes.

The reason I suggested it was that it can be a good way of easing the pressure on anyone not used to competition golf. A scramble could also do that provided you do not have to count too many drives from each player. Having to count 4 drives from each player can put a lot of pressure on some players.

They are looking for €33 but got them to €30 with out booking anything so hoping €25 if I can get a firm number of people playing.

Macreddin promised prizes which was good but that would involve a full day off work for me whereas I could work a half day with Dundrum.

I am happy to play Dundrum, its a bit of a trek from North County Dublin but I have heard good things about the course.

As I mentioned we would be delighted to sponsor some prizes.
