And let's not forget that the owner of this site was a Fianna Fail Councillor for over thirty years.

Or that the reason that the application even went ahead was that Catherine Connolly couldn't follow procedure (which coincidentally cost the council 130k after O'hUiginn took the council to court) - for which she was punished by... re-electing her.

On a separate note, anybody notice the distinct lack of use of the word hypermarket in the reporting of the case since it was rejected?

antoobrien: To be fair to Cllr Catherine Connolly, she opposed the rezoning because she felt it was not for the common good. In this, she was standing by the plea to Cllrs made by the then City Manager and the Planning Office. Her position was vindicated in the An Bord Pleanala decision on the matter of the dodgy re-zoning.

To quote one of the reasons and considerations in the ABP decision:

‘considered that the proposed development by reason of its nature and excessive scale would conflict in a material way with the zoning objective for the site and with the retail strategy for Galway City and Environs as set out in the Development Plan. The proposed development would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
