Question about grains

    Hi,
I noticed in alot of replies to people about their diet that alot of you said "easy on the grains" as part of your responses. Am just wondering what exactly you meant by that- as in what foods you are counting as grains etc. I am nearing the end of a very low calorie diet and it will be up to me soon to monitor my eating habits so was just looking to get more educated on this. Thanks!

Wheat would be the main one that people overdo. (Bread, pasta, breakfast cereals etc). Oats and barley also, although personally I'd tend to eat much less of them anyway.

Yes, go easy on wheat. Most Irish people eat wheat at every meal, and frankly, unless you are bulking, you can't afford this, especially as it's nearly always a very refined version of wheat which spikes your blood sugar.

If you are eating grains, go for whole grains like oats or barley.

An easy way to improve your diet and cut calories is to replace the bread and pasta element of your meal with a huge portion of salad or green vegetable.

Oh, I already eat salad and green vegetables with every meal and don't think I'd go back to eating alot of potatoes and pasta. Brown rice and the like you mean? Is porridge a bad choice as a breakfast, I don't want to eat loads of eggs or bread and I know that breakfast cereals aren't great. What about muesli?

Porridge is one of the better grains. Try not to add sugar or honey or other sweeteners to it if you can.
