My first ever race last year, as I grew up and went to school around corner, but it being a month before DCM I don't think I will bother this year, as that will be a weekend with a 20 miler for me, personally - so speed work is well out the window.

But a great race, cant recommend highly enough for anyone thinking about doing it - I wear my compression top from last year a lot, great quality top for a cheap club race..

I have done this the past two years having the Marathon 4 weeks later and had a great race both times.
It is great to see how your marathon miles have brought your speed on despite doing little speed work. For someone like yourself, speedwork is overrated as the pure mileage of a marathon programme will bring you on in leaps and bounds over all distances.

My Advice is just to do your 20 miler on the friday and do the race too! I'll only be missing it this year as i am doing Berlin, which is unfortunately on the same day as the rathfarnham 5k

Will definitely be doing this - it was my first ever race in 2008, but haven't gotten around to doing it again due to it clashing with a 20 miler in '09 and getting injured 2 days before it last year. This will probably be a goal race for me, really want to set a good 5k time and this is a great course for it.

I'm doing DM but I'll definitely be doing this aswell and aiming for sub 20, yep you heard me right :D

    10 weeks to this.
I'll be hoping to do as many sessions as possible in marlay park from here on. Perfect 1k loop by the house there for intervals.
The only problem is that I'll be down in Wexford for a good bit of August.
I'll be hoping to go sub 20.
Anyone else up for sessions in Marlay or sharing sessions here and we follow them on our own.

Going to try for sub 20 in Rathfarnham as well. I live near Marlay and would be up for some sessions (not always the most available though !). Delighted to get sub 6 min for a mile for first time this evening (BHAA Aviva).

I went sub 6 myself that night. Going to do a session on Wednesday 5x1k @5k pace, I just have to check that my 1k loop is free of concert stuff, if not I'll probably head up to the track.

1k loop isn't runnable but I think this weekends concert is the last. I'm going to head up to the club track for my session.

I put the below schedule on my log, thought I'd share it here.
    Woddle wrote: »
I'm getting very excited by the 5k and have drawn myself up a schedule. There's 56 days so the plan is going to be 5 x 10 day cycles and a small taper of a couple of days.

    Day 1 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 2 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 3 - Vo2 max, 2-6 minute reps totaling 3/4 miles (7/8 miles)
    Day 4 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 5 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 6 - Tempo, totaling 4 miles (8 miles)
    Day 7 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 8 - Long easy (10/12 miles)
    Day 9 - Easy (5/6 miles)
    Day 10 - Hills, 7x115m + 1 mile fast

Any thoughts on the above would be very welcome, most of the above is based on Pfitzinger/Douglas and I'll use J.Daniels Vdots for pace.

I am pleased to say that we have been chosen as the first chip timing company to tackle the Rathfarnham race in 2011.

I had a look at the course map on the web site and see that start and finish are not in the same place and do they run through the finish point shortly after the start?

If any of you are in the area of the start and finish would you be so kind as to measure the width of the road at the start and also the finish so I can work out what mats I need to cover the two locations. The start looks wide and I can cover an area from kerbside to kerbside of 4 metres, or 6 metres or 8 metres. I don't need an exact measurement with a tape, just take a few strides across the road and post the figure here.

I'd plan for a 4 metre wide system at the finish with LED screen showing names and times, a spotter mat at 50 metres from the finish to allow the announcer to call out names as they approach the line and texts afterwards to all valid mobile nos. Make sure you put your mobile number in accurately to the system when you register. We would usually get about10% of the numbers invalid, ie wrong digits, not enough digits or just an invalid number.

I think you'll need a 6m mat for the start, but I'll do my run that way tomorrow and I'll step it out.

You're correct, you will run through the finish shortly after the start. The finish area is roughly at the 1k and obviously 5k mark.
At the finish you only use half the road, I don't think the road is fully closed to traffic (could be wrong, I'd guess 2.5 meters at the finish and 5/6 metrer at the start (guess but wouldn't be far off).

Yeah, it's only half the road at the finish.
And as well as going through the finish line after the start, you go through the start line before the finish :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 309 ✭✭ChampionChip

So if I leave the start line mats in place for the runners coming round again what distance would they be at? I presume it would not be exactly 4km but would you like the time to be made available in the results to let you know how you were doing up to that point? Likewise with the first time you pass the finish line. If its feasible then we could have times at 1km approx, 4km approx and then finish and chip time also.

If anyone can do it measure the distance as accurately as possible from the start to the finish first time and if we subtract that from 5000 it should tell us the distance to the start line is once you come round again.

I'd try it on Google maps if I knew exactly where the start and finish lines were.

Here is the race profile from the GPS Race profile thread:

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4121685

If I remember correctly, the distance between the start and finish line is a bit more than 1km, more like 1.2km I think.

Wouldn't you be better off asking the race director these things? We're all just assuming the race is going to be exactly the same as in previous years, but for all we know they're changing things around a bit this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 309 ✭✭ChampionChip

I think he is on hols at the moment and had sent an email but not got a reply as of yet. If he's out of the country then its not possible for him to measure these things for me. Thought some nice boardies would be happy to help. AFAIK the route has not changed from previous years but if it has we still have plenty of time to sort it out. Thanks for the advice.

Off topic here, but a quick question about timing when the start and finishline are apart. I have been to a few races with different start/finishline locations, where I have ended up with 3 different times for my race, the offical chiptime, the finishline clock time, and then my own watch. It seems to be difficult to synchronous the gun/start timer with the finishline matts and the finishline clock.

Champion, have you come across this, and is there any way to avoid it? One example was the Donore 5k this summer, the offical chiptime did on that occasion match up with my watch time, but the finishline clock had me 5sec quicker, so having seen whatever time I finished with over the line, it turned out I was 5sec slower.

@ChampionChip, The road at the start area is close to 8m wide. The distance from the start to finish is approx. 1.3k (measured with my Garmin), this is assuming the start/finish are the same as previous races (I spotted some faded paint on the curb where I remembered the start/finish was close). One lane on the road re-opens after the start so would traffic damage the mats driving over them?

To be fair they always have a nice finish prize for all. Last year was a compression top, previous years a sports bag. I still have a watch (which still works) from a few years ago. Its also a potential PB course. And you could eat and drink your way through €20 worth of crisps and water at the finish:pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

In fairness this is one of the most established 5ks in the country and you do get your value. The sports bags they have given (2 in the last 6 years i think) are great quality and both of mine are still going strong despite being used on an almost regular basis.

Also this is the first year of chip timing on top of the prizes and is a great PB course. I wouldnt be put of by prize of this race (and is one of the few that I would say about that)

Thanks for the points raised. Your watch time and the chip time should be the same if you start the watch as you cross the start line though if its a narrow start and we use 2 sets of mats then it depends which mat you get captured on.

I don't operate the finish line clock at races so it depends on the operative of it whether he starts it spot on the gun signal or not. The official finish time given for you and the clock time should be the same.

Thanks for the info and don't wory the mats are quite resiliant and are not harmed by traffic driving over them.

Hoping to finish in 25mins or less - it's apparently a fast course so that should help me :P

Am thinking of running in the 5k at Rathfarnham on the 25th September. Am not a competitive runner in any sense. Do they get much of a turnout for the race? Any one here ever take part in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,932 ✭✭✭huskerdu

About 700 people did it last year, of all levels.

According to the results, the last person to cross the line, did it in a time of 46 minutes.

It'll be a great atmosphere, you'll enjoy it.

Must enter this soon, 30 for a 5km race is a bit steep, they must be trying to put people off entering on the morning! Think 20eur is reasonable enough, especially if the finishing top is decent. The club races are great, did the Sportsworld 8km a few months ago and it was great craic.Smaller numbers and a nice informal atmosphere. I'd imagine the standard at this will be very high,I'm hoping that will motivate me to move a bit faster:rolleyes:

Going to do this race Sunday as my first 5km, most of my training has been on the threadmill though. I've set myself a target of going sub 20 mins. Just wondering how threadmill training relates to race pace, I've got out to run outside a few times over the last month, but run in the gym much more often.

Everyone says that this is a fast course, is this just because it's a relatively flat course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

    3 stars (average)
It's relatively flat, but also net downhill - the section between the start and finish lines is run twice, and that's slightly downhill.
Outside is cooler, but you might have wind and rain. You'll have to weave through other runners at the start, but you'll also be driven on by the race atmosphere. You should be able to go a bit faster in a race than you do in training.

Also, just beware that treadmills can be way off in terms of the speed you are doing...a treadmill 12kph speed may not translate as 12kph outdoors, so be prepared for a possibly different time rather than your target time...(Could be faster or slower, but I'd guess it may well be slower).

Ah crap, hadn't thought of that, suppose I'll just have to keep the fingers crossed that it's faster rather than slower. Glass half full :pac:

Anyone calling a time? I'm still pretty wrecked after the half last week but I've been looking forward to this one all summer. My 5k pb is 24.18 from Donore in May and that hurt! The only reason I'm publicly calling a time is so have another reason to dig deep when the pain kicks in!! So.... I would love to walk away with a 23.45 - that's ambitious right now! : /

Best of luck everyone! Hope we get a good day for it :)
