Lunar Eclipse, Wed 15th June

On Wed 15th at around 21:50 the full moon will rise almost in full eclipse.
At the time of moonrise (from Ireland) it will be coming out of the Earth's shadow but those with a clear horizon to the SE will see it almost fully eclipsed and as it rises it will slowly brighten, clearing the Earth's shadow after 23:00. Enjoy. :)

Will it be a good sight with the naked eye or should we have binokulars or telescope for best view?
When is the optimine to view the moon between 9.50 and 11? or should we take it in for the full hour or so

    thanks

Looking forward to this since last week but looks like the weather's not gonna play ball. Check Mr t's forecast. Feck it.

Edit: got me dates mixed up, thought yesterday was the 15th. My bad

Depending on how dark the moon is during the eclipse it might not even be possible to see it as it rises, because the sky will be fairly bright. At full moon the sun sets at the same time as the moon rises.
Naked eye is grand, though the moon is always good through binos or a telescope.
It's best to watch it on and off from when you first spot it till it's just a regular full moon, remember you will need a clear horizon to the SE because it will be all over by the time the moon is around 7 degrees above the horizon (about the width of 3/4 fingers at arms length), it's not going to be the most spectacular of eclipses.

I'm not holding out much hope of seeing it from here unfortunately.

Hopefully we will be granted with clear skies, next one isn't until 2015 AFAIK.

Yea, next total from here is Sep 28 2015, though that year the big buzz will be a total solar eclipse on March 20th with the centre of totality just off the coast of the Faroe Islands (the islands will see full totality), From Ireland we will get a very good partial, the image below shows what the sun will look like from Cork.

I'll be down in clontarf for it so hopefully the view S.E. wont be too bad - if we see anything at all!

Yes indeed, I remember 1999 very well, I took the day of work and we had a party in the back garden for it, great fun:)

Were you in Waterford for it?
Here in Cork it was pissing down all that morning, one thing that did surprise me, was all the office people along the South Mall here coming out and standing on the street (umbrellas in hand) as it got dark.
I got a right slagging that morning 'cause I had been in my local (early house) since 7am and had got everyone there (pissheads and dockers) all excited about the upcoming wonder and it just got a little dark, they didn't let me live it down for weeks. :)
Be great to go to the Faroes for it, but the Faroes in March??? ...hmmm....

Yeah I watched it from Waterford. It was fine here, no rain and only a few clouds in the sky. I set up a homemade solar telescope and projected the image of the sun onto the back wall of the house and we all had the solar glasses. Got to see the whole thing or at least most of it. 11:11 was totality in cornwall. We had a TV outside with us so we could follow the coverage on SKY News.:)
My daughter was 4 at the time and I had great fun trying to explain to her just what was happening:)
Faroes in March??? Wonder if I could convince Mrs Beeker that we should take a small holiday!

The sunny south (south) east ya lucky fucker.
Start leaving the odd article about how wonderful the Faroes in spring are lying around the place, plant the seed of positive association, in 4 years Mrs B will be asking you to go on a little trip. :)

You could cheat a bit too by leaving the odd postcard around with pictures of sun kissed beaches and palm trees. You can always explain it away as deforestation when you get there.:pac:

Cú Giobach when i posted yesterday i thought yesterday was the 15th and knew there was rain on the way. Its not lookin to bad for this evening, reasonable chance of the cloud breaking up by then. As you were saying its gonna be very bright at that time but we should see some of it, fingers crossed.

I'm in the midlands (Longford/Westmeath border), we have clear skies but somewhat cloudy horizon to the SE, will I get to see it if it goes above said clouds?

    I'm a noob at this btw, I just got a Meade ETX-70.

Yep, still very bright as well. Also we've got trees/houses to the SE, didn't realise until reading this thread that the eclipse would be all over before the moon rose very far :(

I was in Metz in France in 1999 for the solar eclipse (organised my holiday around it :D ) was a bit cloudy but could see the crescent sun coming and going through the cloud. At totality it got impressively dark...

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Solid cloud cover and no wind. Gotta hate this country being where it is, must be a record for cloud coverage every year.
