Bulking regime for a veggie

    Hi all,

I am keen to find a fitness regime and diet. I was wondering if some of you could give me advice on both.

I want to bulk up. I'm 6' and 12.5st. I am pretty skinny but have a large belly. It is very disproportional. I know the belly is fat that needs to shift but I don't want to lose weight on other parts of my body.

I would like to find a good bulking weight lifting regime of 3 days per week.

Here is my diet (I'm a vegetarian):

    Breakfast @ 7am:
1 bowl of wheetabix with full fat milk (4 biscuits).
2 slices brown bread toast with flora and marmalade.
1 cup of tea (full fat milk, no sugar).
1 whey protein shake with full fat milk.

    11am:
Handle full of salted pastachio nuts.
    Apple

    Lunch @ 1pm:
    Brown bread salad sandwich.
Bag of salt and vinegar crisps.
1 small bottle of orange juice.

    Snacl @ 6pm
1 whey protein shake with full fat milk.

    Dinner @7pm (a mixture of):
    Brown Pasta.
    Quorn Spaghetti Bolognese.
    Veg curry with white rice.
    Potato wedges.
    Vegetables.
1 whey protein shake with full fat milk.

I eat lots of carbs so as to gain weight. I'm afraid of cutting out the carbs and becoming skinnier (and the belly remaining). I run 3.5 miles to work 4 days per week. I play football once a week.

So can anyone suggest a better diet and a link to 3 day weight lifting regime?

    Thanks a million,
    Walrus

I wouldn't think its too good to have shakes as your only protein source (with the exception of nuts). Can you eat eggs at all? Get some eggs in at breakfast instead of that shake. I'd lose the crisps too and the potato wedges.

How about tofu? Could you get tofu in at dinner time? I'm guessing you don't eat fish either then?

It's actually quite hard to form a solid diet for a vegetarian now that I think of it!!

Also if you are trying to bulk up, lose the cardio for a while.

It's not really. Lots of protein in eggs, dairy, tofu.

I've been looking for high protein veg, or at least higher protein than carbs. Most types of bean seem to have more carbs than protein.

The highest ratio I found were petits pois frozen peas from Tesco:

    Carbs: 5.5g, Protein:5g per 100g

You have to eat a lot of them : )

    Can anyone recommend others?

I don't eat eggs. I took a disliking to them as a child and now only eat them occasionally. Are they good for protein? Maybe I should start eating them...

You could start hiding them in recipes. Mix em with loads of veggies and even add some cheese on top. You could bake them in some types of muffins (you can make savoury ones too, which are good as carry around snacks), etc. I go through so many eggs eating and cooking/baking with them, I'd need about 50 hens if I ever get that dream farm;).

Since you eat Quorn you could start adding more that into your diet, that's easy to hide too. And what about beans, quinoa, lentils, etc. Try out some veg Asian recipes. Your diet could do with a little bit more fats too and even though you're a veg it could do with a little bit more veggies too.

Yes eggs are a great source of protein, Try 4 eggs on toast for breakfast or even an omelette. Also when it comes to bulking milk is your friend. Lots of calories and 30 grams of protein per litre.

    Interesting.

What about a 3 day lifting plan?

Not just good, they're the best whole food when it comes to protein bioavailability:

Eggs are also a source of good fats, they'd be the first thing I'd add to your diet.

Chickpeas. 9g protein per 100g. Chuck them in a salad or curry or get some hummus.

    Yes, chickpeas are great!

Although they do have about three times as much carbs as protein. Is there any vegetable you could eat which would allow you to get in more protein relative to carbs.

How do people do this if the don't eat meat and dairy ?

Thanks for all the dietary advice.

Does anyone have any links to good 3 day per week weight lifting regimes? I can only find 4 day ones.

    Thanks

Starting Strength is what I'll be doing when I get access to a barbell and squat rack.

Regarding bulking, I find I can get sick of nuts and they're quite expensive. You can get a 1kg tub of peanut butter from myProtein or Holland and Barrett pretty cheaply. I've actually 2kg on order at the moment (should be waiting for me when I get home today) :D
