Definately not essential if you are getting enough protein in your normal diet (eggs, fish, lean meat, etc).

However, if you're not getting 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight in your daily diet, it's a handy way of making up the difference.

What are your goals - lose weight, gain muscle, both? If you post up a typical daily diet, someone will be able to tell you whether you should either change your diet or consume a post-workout shake.

My goals are to improve my cardio and also tone up. I'm 6'1 and weighed in at 13stone 9 pounds when i started.I weighed myself today and am just under 13 and a half stone.

My typical diet would be a scone and coffee for breakfast.dinner usually spag boll, meat and two veg. Dinner would be risotto, chicken curry or maybe toasted sandwiche and soup depending on what time i'm training.

If that's all you're eating, I don't think you're getting enough calories to put on any muscle. Also, there's very little protein in there.

Would you consider adding eggs to breakfast and/or replacing the scone with porrige? Personally, I used to just have eggs for breakfast and, since starting my weight training in the morning, have added porrige before the workout.

Without a drastic change to the above diet, I think a protein shake post-workout will be beneficial to you.

If you decide to change the diet instead, have a read of the stickies in the Nutrition forum.

I eat porridge sometimes after i get home from training. I read whey protein was good for helping muscles repair after any type of training.I dont want to put on too much muscle mass as i've a pretty athletic build at the moment but i would definitely like to tone up whats there and increase my cardio.
