Hi after some advice on the fashion and appearance forum last week, I bought a thong to wear under a white summer dress. I tried on the dress with the thong underneath and found it really comfortable with no VPL which is great but I told my friends about my solution and they said they wouldn't wear a thong at their age. We are all about 44/45. Am I too old to wear a thong?

    No! Ignore your friends.

They wouldn't at their age - you would at yours. Pay no heed, if it does the job and you are comfortable then who cares what other people would or wouldn't do!

Enjoy your summer dress - and perhaps avoid taking fashion advice on your underwear from your friends. :D

Thanks for your help. One of my friends was adamant that a woman over forty shouldn't wear a thong at all. I really like wearing the thong that I bought and i liked the way my bum looked in it. I really want to wear thongs more often but my friends attitude unnerved me a bit. I think I will ignore their views

Your friends do sound jealous and id be hesitant to share this kinda stuff with them in the future. P.s I have some dresses that look way better with a thong, its very common, no matter your age.

Let them wear their frumpy granny knickers while you sport your no vpl thong. It shouldn't matter a jot what undies you like to wear.

I second windsock, if you look good who gives a crap.
Its only bad when your outer wear are a bit youngish...mutton dressed as lamb and all that.

What a ridiculous thing to say! I have no idea what undies my friends wear and would never make such a comment. Honestly, if my mother wears thongs under her white clothes I wouldn't care and she's in her 60s!

They are not seen by anyone, so it really doesn't matter. Unless the friends were thinking of wearing low-rise jeans with hot pink thongs visible over the top - that's not a good look on anyone

I wouldn't be too bothered what your so called "friends" think. You wear what is comfortable!

I actually wear flesh coloured spanx shorts under dresses because of the dreaded "thighs rubbing together" that happens to me. (TMI??)

Thongs, g strings, bikini underwear tend to be worn with jeans etc.

Your friends aren't going to be wearing the thong. Ignore their opinions!

oh I have quite a selection, flesh or black depending on the dress.

They have to be the cycling shorts length though, for obvious reasons, the shorter ones don't work.

Also they just give you a nice smooth silhouette and hold in any lumps and bumps........I watch too much Gok Wan!

    OMG  Sounds painful!

I tend to wear my thongs, etc with dresses and skirts as opposed to jeans, to avoid the aforementioned "thong antler" ;)

Ah now I can't be the only person that happens to! Am I? Surely not....

I don't know anyone that their thighs don't touch at the top, and I know some very skinny girls.

Wow, maybe I'm some sort of physically deformed character ;)

anyway, spanx shorts are the best choice for me :)

Oh, well mine don't. I mean, unless I'm sitting down. Sorry, I'm sure you're not the only one, just never heard of this particular problem before from friends :o

What a loat of rubbish your friends talk. I used to always wear thongs but then I put on a ton of weight and went to a size 22/24. Didnt look good or feel comfy. Anway went back down to a 18 and wore the hummy control type with the thong back and was delighted. Can't find a link to them.

My Mum is 80 and really into image and always looks amazing and she wears a thong under some trousers, She feels and feels fantastic so why not. I am sure your friends would be shocked by her!!!

I say go for it girl!!!

    Ah! Me too!! :D
it's the most uncomfortable thing in the world...

Thongs under trousers etc, and the spanxy style shorts under dresses!

To answer OP... ignore your friends! What difference does age make to what underwear you wear?!?!

This happens to me sometimes, usually when I'm on holidays in a hot country, but I find talc works better then because obviously I don't want to put on more layers! So you're not physically deformed, don't worry! :D

As for the original question - psh, who cares what your friends think. It's not as if you're wearing a leopard-print thong that sticks out over your trousers, you're simply wearing one to avoid VPL.

I would never tell anyone what they should wear under their clothes, and I used to wear them and found them comfortable, but after becoming a mom I felt awkward about it due to my age.

I'd like to thank you kind ladies for disabusing me of my ignorance. :)

Well being that it is a white dress they're probably thinking you'll be walking around with the cheeks of your arse on display. Maybe that's where they're coming from with that one.

    :D

I found that older women have notions of thong underwear as being racy, or suitable only for the bedroom. I had to buy a pair for my mother to get her to try them, she's sickeningly devoted to her huge mammy knickers, but has admitted that her ass looks great in a thong!

I probably have the whole spectrum of knickers in my drawer, from massive comfy ones for that time of the month, to boyshorts, bikini's and g strings. I wear what I want to wear, and anyone with a contrary opinion be damned!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,255 ✭✭✭✭Esoteric_

My mam used to only wear big knickers, whereas I only wear thongs or g-strings because I find them more comfortable. My mum is 47 btw. She finally tried a thong because we were giving out to her about her VPL and she was delighted with the results. Feck what your friends say, thongs are comfortable and useful for wearing under dresses and some trousers.

"We shouldn't do x at our age" when "x" affects nobody... is logic-defying...

And especially when people can't even see the damn thing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭Kooli

If I'm not mistaken, the OP's friends said that 'they wouldn't wear a thong at their age'. One of them said that women in general of a certain age shouldn't wear thongs.

So what's with all the responses that the friends are jealous? Calling them "so called friends"?

I think it's valuable to give the OP a different opinion so that she can continue to wear thongs if she likes, but to be honest I don't get all this 'how dare they!' indignation!!

Oh and by the way, I'm another 'thigh chafer' here!! I can't wear dresses or skirts when I'm on holidays or I'd have a layer of skin gone by the end of the day, so shorts and trousers only I'm afraid, it sucks!!

Try BodyGlide, it really helps for this sort of thing.

Wow cool! The most annoying website ever, but the stuff looks great. Found it on ebay so will definitely give that a go! Could I really find something that would let me wear a skirt in summer? This could change my life!!

Once you look & feel good...... go for it :)
I'm 30 and wouldn't consider wearing anything but a thong, can spot VPL at 100 paces and hate it :(

Thanks for the advice. I dont want to give you a misleading view of my friends. They arent jealous or anything like it. Just a bit conservative at times! Anyway I wore the thong under the dress yesterday and it was great. I had only worn a g string/thong once before as I was probably a bit conservative too! But Im very happy with my dress now, with no visible lines!

It happens to lots of us, male and female, my wife calls it my "Chub Rub", I know, cruel, but it made me laugh like an ejit the first time she said it. And your right, cant beat cycle shorts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭Kooli

I ordered Bodyglide on ebay for the ol' "Chub rub" (love it!!). Have a week in Spain coming up, fingers crossed!!

Thanks again for all the help. I wore my dress on holidays and it was great not having to worry about VPL! And I decided to buy some more thongs instead of my usual big knickers. Although I will have to be careful about wearing a thong under jeans. I accidentally dropped my purse in a shop and half of the shop got a good view of my new thong!!

Ill still be wearing a thong at 60 never mind 40:D
