Thinking of buying into the p90x craze

So after going from being a regular user of this forum, and and being dedicated to playing rugby and doing routine exercise, to your typical university student doing nothing but studying, eating and drinking, I am doing my best to get back into it now that I'm graduated.

I've been doing some running but want to move on to building muscle and getting back some of the highly desired muscle tone and definition. With the time and money budget I'm on, I think joining a gym is out of the question, as €50 a month is a bit rich for something I may only have time to use 1-2 times a week, so ideally I want something I can do at home in 1-1.5 hours to maximise my time.

I had weights before that I gave to my cousin and he subsequently got rid of, and have been debating whether to get another set to start, until this p90x program caught my attention, with the option to use bands OR weights. Bands are a more attractive option, due to being cheaper and taking up a lot less space, but realistically are they as good?

I really just want to know if the p90x kit is worth the ~€100 price it demands, and would I be wasting my time doing it with resistance bands? I'm of quite a slim build, about 80kgs and 185cm tall, not looking to pack on the pounds, just get some definition and muscle tone back.

friend of mine had it and i've seen the dvds

its pretty lame in my opinion , if you have the motivation then you shouldn't need it and if you don't then you won't use it

better to educate yourself on how you work and go from there

    In short, yes.

I think resistance bands are quite beneficial, but only when combined with regular strength training exercises. I use them to warm up mainly. And they are good for improving sprint speed. I would also use them occasionally for say high rep dips, but if I never had them, I dont think I would miss them all that much. They are quite cheap so I would suggest investing in them anyway but I would never favour them over free weights, ever, ever.

P90x is not a great program for building muscle, as it's based on loads of reps with relatively light weight. The workouts are long, and inefficient in my opinion.

If you want to get fit, train for and play some sport. Far more enjoyable than P90xing every day. You're in college so there's loads of opportunity. If you want to put on some muscle, get a proper weight training routine. You're better off buying a bench, a barbell, and some squat stands. If you want to lose some body fat, watch your diet as well.

It certainly is better than nothing, but 6 days a week doing 1-1.5 hrs of super high reps, or boring 'yoga-x', or stupid 'kenpo-x' just did my head in.
