Anyone remember answers of anything? I'd love to know how it went! Also that one about the tourist office, ridiculous!

The tourist office was regular opening hours. It gave this in the legend that was supplied with the map.

Many of the short questions were difficult though.

Ridiculous as in crazy easy? Definitely. Funny though.

I especially liked the falling house prices question.

"Give one reason why house prices fell after 2007?"

ridiculous as in the fact that it was a bit ridiculous! easy obviously but a little odd all the same!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭aranciata

i just said that banks no longer gave out loans, meaning that no one could buy houses, so the prices fell.... that's right, right?

The tourist office one was on the legend. It was really easy!

The rest were a bit weird. Hope I made up for it with the rest of the paper.

Yeah, I WTF'd when I saw those short questions. I think I still did pretty well in them, but they made you work a lot more for your marks than pervious years, that's for sure.

what i said too! having the west of clare and the burren in a different colour to any of the options, including limestone threw me though... did they manipulate the map or something? i remember it being in a dark green or something..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 251 ✭✭brian93

I had a sh*t attack when I saw the first short question, and the second one was different but I got it. The rest were lovely. For the corrie or arete one, was the corrie the larger area circled in red?

what is it? there was millions of them!

also the geography exam should be wayyy longer.. i had to rush the end of my regional and all of my elective questions :(

didnt help that my hand is still half dead from both english papers!

i just looked at the OL paper and i think it was much nicer than HL . The composition of b & c was done much better at OL and phrasing of q were nicer, but it's OL that's why it's like that :( wished HL had the composition of qs of OL paper :(

Umm I really don't mean to sound sarcastic but I think that's the point.. There's supposed to be a difference between OL & HL, hence the points difference
    :)

Thank god I looked back over my short questions at the end. Somehow I had written down:
    D
    D
    D
    C
I have no idea how I managed to do so.

I put vegetable oil for a renewable resource. Had it in for AGES before I got to the volcano question and was writing about the positive effects of volcanos in Iceland = geothermal energy :pac:

Don't know where I got vegetable oil from. I think I thought you put it in Green Cars. Maybe it's true.

i know,i just think that OL paper was really nice and lookin back at previous OL papers there wasn't anythin unexpected today, for HL it was the hardest paper ever,in my opinion ,they threw economic aspects into physical, and the short were kinda tricky,i know its a HL ,but previous papers were much nicer me thinks :)
i still have a feelin i passed it even though i messed it a little bit :)

Yeah actually did anyone notice how a lot of the paper was based on economic impacts etc?? :O
    Short Q's
    Physical
    Regional
    AND
    Human!

I avoided these like the plague. Economic effects of quarrying? I learned half a paragraph on this. eg. 90,000 people employed in the construction industry before 2008. But it was literally a paragraph! No idea how you'd get an essay out of it.

Very economic this paper. I was wondering would it have been easier if we had have studied the economic elective?

Striations are furrows or ridges, often associated with glacial activity.

And the Iberian peninsula is Spain + Portugal.

And I stopped geog at Junior! :P :D

Yeah that's what I thought too...

Well what you put down, is what I put down in my exam. When I came out and asked the teacher she said it was wrong!

I'd be quite happy if you guys were right, means I got full marks in that question! :pac: Will go back and change it.

I just thought it was like a big knife that cut's through the earth, which gave it the nice sleek, sexy look, like in the picture on the geography paper,
Nice to see you can recall these technical terms from when you were 14 to put us all to sham.

Seems to be a pretty popular diagram, type Asthenosphere into google images and plenty of similar images come up. This one shows the correct titles for the layers

    Internal_layersUSGS.gif

The questions were hard but fair. I wouldn't be surprised if they set out to confuse people as previously it's a very easy area to pick up 80 marks, this year I think they tried to change that.

    Actually, nope.

But it does make me wonder how much they have abridged the geography syllabi in the intervening years if those terms are unfamiliar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 BallerinaBabe

Think I got 76 in the short questions! Happy out but a little bit annoyed that my mistake was mixing up the crust and the athenosphere, i should have known that. :(

Ican tell you, I've done geography since 1st year, got an A in HL Junior Cert and a B2 in HL LC Mock and have never come across striations in any of the books..

    Our teacher is SH1TE though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,391 ✭✭✭Mysteriouschic

How were we supposed to know if the tourist office had regular open hours?
Did you see the ordinary level short question were so simple, you couldn't go wrong with them. Seriously you could get an A in that paper.

What on earth was stratriations? an conical hill? never heard of those before yesterday.
The landform question wasn't that clear. Then the structure of the earth looking like a cone? What the hell was that? Hadn't seen that either. Why did they have to make our paper so hard this year? I was hoping for a B in that. Basically half the short questions I'd never seen or heard of before or the questions were stupid like the tourist question

Exact same, I guessed it was to do with "strata" though, meaning it'd have to be "B", it wasn't though. oh well :L

The opening hours thing was on the legend that was on the back of the map they gave you. I think the filled in Tourist Office symbol had regular opening hours and the pale one didn't. Either way, it was right there!

And the ordinary level paper is supposed to be way easier. That's why an A will only get them 60 points.

I think I ticked yes anyway as a random guess I was just thinking they probably work 9-5. Yeah I guess so , an then they make the honours rock hard .
The other years weren't as bad.

Lads, (Not just you) That was EASY!! A 10 year old could do it! All you had to do was find the office, turn over the map and see that that symbol said "regular opening hours". I don't get what everyone is going on about with that question!!! You don't need to have ever done LC Geography to look at a map & key :confused::confused:

I didn't think it would be written there. But do you don't expect a question about if the tourist works hours to appear in the geography exam paper, that could throw anyone off they wouldn't be thinking that would come up .

A striation is the grooves left in the surface below the glacier, they are made from the rocks that have become part of the glacier rubbing and scraping the surface, experts use them to determine the direction from which the glacier came from.

Probably of little use to you now though!!:D

If a symbol is on the map it's in the legend. If you aren't sure of the symbol look at the legend. The green tourist office symbolises a normal opening hours tourist office, a white symbolises a restricted hours opening office. If anything, it was one of the simpler questions.

This is exactly what they were trying to do this year, stop people trying to expect what will come up and instead catch people out and make them use their heads. 1 example of which is the geocology title "How do economic activities impact a biome", it was just a reworded version of "How do human activities impact a biome" yet it threw so many people off.
