I can't wait. Hopefully it'll give me a chance to meet some of the beer loving boardsies on here. I am a long term reader but rarely post ...mainly because I am relatively new to the world of actually good tasting beers

How does this work? Is it like Taste of Dublin as in buying tasters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,707 ✭✭✭ciaran76

Never been to it but hope to go this year.

Cheapskates and moaners need not apply, its for people who want to experience quality new beers from around the world, not people looking to get tanked up on huge amounts of cheap "beer".

Do you think there will be much or anything different that you cant pick up in one of the good beer off licences around Dublin, considering the 20 euro entrance fee?

Possibly not but it's an enjoyable atmosphere where you can taste and talk beer. The weather was great last year so a lot of people were out in the beer garden. Actually it would have been worringly overcrowded inside if it had been raining.

Most of the stalls were also fairly generous with measure sizes and all beers were priced the same so if you picked carefully you could get a decent measure of some expensive high abv beers at a good price.

I thought the entrance fee included a couple of drinks last year. Could be wrong.

Yeah, you got five (I think) tokens last year.

It was great fun last year, if a little crowded. I'll be going again.

I would be keen to go, but also would be interested in the structure (not looking to get tanked up on cheap beer). I would rather sample lots of small portions of beer, than drink pints of a small number of beers.

You pay the entrance fee, and get vouchers for small servings of beer, and can then buy additional vouchers for additional servings of beer? Is it a mixture of draught and bottles? Do you think it be well-represented by the Irish craft brewers or a closed shop based on the organizer's typical supply chain? Can you taste a beer (tiny sample) before using a voucher for a larger portion?

I know I should ask direct, but I'm feeling lazy. :)

    Yes.

Metalman will be there, Dungarvan too, I think. Pretty sure Grand Cru will have the Porterhouse stuff. Possibly more.
Can you taste a beer (tiny sample) before using a voucher for a larger portion?
I'd say it depends who you ask ;)

So who should we ask? :)

Thanks for the concise response. I'm sold!

I would say -- and this isn't based on any sort of experience or anything -- that anyone who's there selling their own product would be happy to give you a taste, while anyone who's there as an employee of a company is more likely to play by the rules. However, it's quite possible that organisers would have imposed a strict no-free-tastes rule. I don't know.

A very interesting, I though it was just a bottle event

The only draught I saw was the pod's own taps but of course this year could be different.

Well, there's quite a few beers there anyway! I'm pretty excited, particularly intrigued by the bourganel ones - has anyone had them? Are they nice, or a bit gimmicky?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭redalan

    Hello

Are the tickets only available on the internet or can they bought elsewhere?

    Cheers
    Al

Had never of them before. I'm curious as well, athough I can't say that I have good feeling about this. Verveine in beer would just be plain weird, Nougat would (at best) taste like Innis & Gunn (which I loathe) and chestnut.. if it's anywhere close to the Pietra (from Corsica), it should go down the drain.

Impossible to get? Invisible beer maybe? Otherwise that sounds like cask beer.

From what I can see, the website does not say what's included in the ticket price this year ? Anyone know?

One would imagine that "impossible to get" stuff will be fairly thin on the ground.

Anyone serving you warm cask beer is doing it wrong.

Good ale/beer has a rich flavour that needs nothing at all. From wooden casks if you had a glass of it you'd never forget it.Served at room temperature.

Does this beer have a name?

Too vague to be posting on a beer forum, for example, name 2 or 3 of your favorite beers?

I've had many a beer served straight from a wooden cask. They're always better at cellar temperature, especially if the wood is fresh: too much oak can destroy beer flavours and oak flavours are even more pronounced at higher temperatures.

Asking for room temperature Kölsch or Alt from the wooden casks in Cologne or Düsseldorf respectively would make even the most taciturn Rhinelander laugh at you.

That was a really good night. Well done to all involved.

Trouble brewing, metalman and brewdog beers were great last night, I can't remember many of the rest as I was half lit, can't believe some idiots were drinking Heineken, why weren't commercial beer taps covered for the night anyway, the industrial beer companies have the pubs for 365 days of the year why cant real beer drinkers have them for 1 or 2 nights?

I suppose some people would be brought along by friends to try it out. The heineken / carlsberg was presumably there in case anyone didn't like the other beers. Or mabye it was heiniken gold reserve or carlsberg trippel blonde.

To put it in perspective, many would look at your choice of brewdog, trouble brewing and metalman beers and scoff because these are ordinarily available in bull and castle, porterhouse, l mullgan grocer etc without the 20 entrance fee.

Othe than that, was there a good crowd, good selection, good atmosphere etc?

because the venue wants to make as much money as possible from the event I'm imagine. if you asked them to close the bar i'm sure there would be an added cost to the venue to make up for lost sales resulting in more costs for the organisers. even if you are selling beer yourself at the event...

at the Great British Beer Festival in London a few weeks ago the venue bar was open and I saw people buying Carlsberg.

Why do you care if some people want to drink Heineken ? It's beer too. It's fine complaining about lack of choice but please don't complain about too much choice!

Because if I went to the Electric Picnic to hear Arcade Fire I wouldn't want Jedward on the same bill.

I also had some other nice beers that I never heard of before but I can't remember them because we were in da 'Grain before it and I had around 4 or 5 drinks there before heading to POD!

I don't mean to criticse you at all - in fact I would have a similar view towards beer ie to try new beers without being too precious about it.

But I'd sound a note of caution re: criticising people who like heiniken/carlesberg. All you can really say is that you don't like them or you prefer other beers. And since you could have kept drinking beers like metalman in against the grain but decided to go to the beerfest, presumably for the event as much as te quality of the beers, so too I'm sure some people who only drink heiniken but wouldn't mind sampling something else would have gone for the event too.
