Terms of a bet

    Hi Everyone,

Me and a couple of friends are currently trying to set the terms of a get fit/lose weight bet on the go. The only thing we have in common is that we are all overweight and unfit - there is quite a large range in terms of height, weight and Body fat among the group. There is quite a large sum of money involved (for motivational purposes) so I would like to get some advice on the terms of the bet.

    1. Is Body Fat the fairest measure to use?
    2. if not what would be a better measuring stick for the bet.
    3. We want to make it extremely tough but not impossible so although the weight goals may be different the level of difficulty should be the same - is there any way of determining this for a group?

    Thanks for all the help

set a time line then set a set of achievements

    ie

    bench 60% of bodyweight x 5
    deadlift 100% of bodyweight x 5
    squat 80% of bodyweight x 5
    strict press 50% of bodyweight x 5
do 50 pressups in 2 minutes
    run 3k in 25 minutes

anyone who achieves all of these gets a share of the money and if no one does you give it to charity then ye can help each other achieve while still competing

bodyfat % is quite a good one - maybe a % of the overall bodyfat % lost ;) if that makes sense.

Like in the biggest loser it is % of overall body weight loss that wins, make it body fat lost instead of body weight? of body weight too I suppose, depends on how much you have to lose.

Lol. Otherwise I agree with this, base it around your lifts to some extent, throw in 15 chin-ups without failure as well.

percentage body weight loss would be easiest to monitor

bodyweight means nothing. getting fitter can (should in my opinion) include gaining lean weight so peanalising lean mass gain would be crazy

to loose weight simply don't eat, not really gonna make you fitter tho

I like jaggiebunnet's idea of a % of your bodyfat %. Obviously losing 5% bodyfat is easier if you have 30% bodyfat than if you are 15%. But a % of your starting bodyfat % would be fairer I think. Though all those % signs are starting to confuse me so maybe it doesn't work like that.

Be cool if ye did it over a series:

    Something like:

    A) Weighlifting: Who can lift the heaviest in multiples of bodyweight for Bench, Deadlift and Squat.

    B) A timed Crossfit style workout/metcon

    C)Timed 5mile run.

D)Biggest % of body fat lost from starting weight.

Covers a whole spectrum of 'fitness' and doesnt only focus on the weight loss aspect. Aggregates the 'fitter' contestants as they have an advantage in the crossfit/run while the fatter guys have an advantage in the weight loss due to having more to lose. The Weightlifting, since its in multiples of BW should be evenish.

    That's a frickin deadly idea.

Part D of Theresa'a one there would benefit people starting from a worse baseline wouldn't it?

Yes, so it would be best to change D to dave80's idea:
