hi all, I'm trying to lose weight and tone at the moment. I lve got my diet in order but am wondering where to start re exercise.
Is cardio best for weight loss? I'm not mad on it but love conditioning like sit ups, crunches, press ups and would happily do 100s a day but is there any point in that? any advice would be great, thanks!

You should do a good bit of weight training, do different muscle groups on alternate days. When you weight train you increase your metabolism for about 48 hours so you burn more calories in your day-today activities. Cardio helps with burning fat but isnt particularly effective on its own. Sit up and crunches can be used to help tone your abdominal muscles but arent anyuse on there own as there's no point having toned abdominal muscles if there's a layer of fat hiding them!

And as much as I know the theory behind all this, Im still about 20lbs overweight. So just knowing what to do is no good... Gotta have the motivation! Hence my extra 20. Hope this helped - Best of luck!!

If you read my response to TrinnersGal89 on her thread it may be useful as if you like conditioning then kettlebells might be for you too.

Great conditioning workouts, help you shed body fat and combines resistance (weight) training with cardio.

The blog I link to in that post has lots of videos that will give you an idea of the kind of workouts I am talking about.

Now, not to sound harsh, but I've heard a lot of people say their diet is in order. Post it up just to make sure.

Your cals are very low (But I can't judge just yet because I don't know your stats). You'll need more food at breakfast, and more protein all round.

Good to see your getting your fruit and veg in :)

thanks for having a look :) I'm not very active atm so trying to avoid cals I won't be using, but my stats are 5'6 10st 7, is it still fairly low yeah? Would a glass of slimline milk maybe with lunch be ok? could have some beans with breaky maybe? sorry so many questions!! thanks again :)

I cant really judge your protion sizes except for breakfast. Do you eat oats? You cant go far wrong from Porridge, Eggs, and Fruit for breakfast. I'm a big fan of blueberries for breakfast, and no, blueberry muffins don't count :D

    sorry for the mini hijack

I was just wondering in peoples opinion how far below maintence calories one can go without slowing down metabolism? Iv read 15% but Im not so sure?

Also say a person has a calorie need of 2000 before exercise and is trying to lose weight. should the 15% be taken away after or before exercise?

    e.g. Sedentry I need 2000 cals but after a workout I may burn between 500-800 should I be consuming 1700 or 2125?

If by maintenance calories you mean your BMR, then IMO you should never eat below this figure and certainly not over a prolonged period.

The 15% or 500 calories should be taken from your daily total (BMR + calories required for lifestyle and training)

No Expert, but what I do is drop 500 calories from my total daily calorie requirement (BMR + lifestyle & Exercise calories), continure lifting as heavy as possible and up the number and intensity of conditioning workouts I do. I give this 2 or 3 weeks to take effect. Then if I am losing around 1lb weight/week I cary on. If I am losing weight at a faster weight I eat slightly more calories and if I am not losing weight, I increase the deficit.

Also a point to remember is that everytime you drop 7lbs recalculate you calorie requirements, because the lighter you will require less calories.

yeah I understand all that I was just wondering how feasible it would be to drop weight faster while holding on to lean body mass. BTW I know this isnt easy and only would apply to a small % of the population. But surely if everything is done correctly one can lose > 3-4lb of fat per week

I would imagine that the more weight you have to lose, the bigger your weekly drops would be initially, however I think when you get down to the last stone or half stone, then you will be doing well to drop 1lb/week.
