A dwarf actor who played an Ewok in Star Wars was caught fondling himself next to a teenage girl on a train.

According to the tearful 17-year-old. Nicholas Read was touching himself under a bowler's hat, and she was too scared to say anything as she feared he would assault her.

The girl told Leicester Crown Court court: "He placed his hat on his crotch. I saw a movement and I didn't know whether to believe it. I looked in the reflection of the window and saw his hand moving under the hat. He tried to catch my attention, tilting his hat up, looking at his crotch area and then looking at me a few times."

He performed the act for 30 to 40 minutes of the 55-minute train ride.

The actor, who stands just 4ft 5in, says the bowler's hat was on his lap because he couldn't reach to put it in the overhead compartment.

The girl was travelling from London when the actor, who also played a goblin in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, sat down next to her.

According to the Daily Mail, he had drunk half a bottle of gin and was very "merry".

When the girl got off the train at Leicester, "he put his legs on to the seat, leaving his hat on his crotch and I had to squeeze past him".

She added: "I was shaking and a bit distressed."

Read was convicted of indecent exposure, and will be sentenced next month.

An actor who appeared as a goblin in a Harry Potter film has been given a 20-week suspended sentenced for indecently exposing himself on a train.

Nicholas Read, 40, of Wade Close, Stoke-on-Trent, was found guilty of performing a sex act under cover of a juggler's hat in October 2010.

A 17-year-old girl told Leicester Crown Court how she felt "trapped" sat next to Wade on a London to Leicester train.

Wade must undertake a community sex offender group work programme.

In passing sentence, Recorder Richard Bond, said: "A relatively short sentence of imprisonment will not help you and it will certainly not protect the the public from your fantasies.

"I have to ask myself this question: is this a case where not just you, but more importantly, the public would benefit from you receiving a short custodial sentence? The answer to that is no."

The court heard how Wade, who played a goblin in the 2000 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone film and an ewok in Return of the Jedi, had previous convictions for making explicit phone calls to "random" women from a hotel room.

Mr Bond ordered Wade to pay £500 towards the cost of his prosecution and be supervised by the Probation Service.

What is it with people and needing to **** off in public. First of all it was Neil prenderville, now some other clown from Harry Potter. I all my 31 years, I have never seen somebody tear the wire off themselves in public. Is it more common than I think?
