    Nothing for me today.

A rough calculation of the number of prizes in certain counties today versus the population, returns the not unexpected result that wealth is concentrated in Dublin and sorrounding counties. If wealth is being measured by the Prize Bond metric.

Dublin has 28.3% of the population, but got 41.5% of the €50 prizes. Even more striking is Wicklow with 207 prizes, 155K population. This compares to Meath 181, 220K. Kildare 185, 247K. But the affluence does not extend to poor Louth, 60 prizes 139K population. Meath got 3 times as many prizes as Louth, with not even near double the population.

Cork is 11.34% of population and 10.81% of prizes, so pretty well matched. As always Dublin and Cork combined got more than half of all the prizes.

Those statistics don’t mean an awful lot without knowing how many prize bonds are held per head of population.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,634 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I do a count each month, and on average each one million bonds wins 6 times per draw. See post #8607 as an example. So I could say with some certainty that there are 34.5 million bonds in Wicklow, and 10 million bonds in Louth. One million for every 4.5k of population in Wicklow. One million for every 13.9K of population in Louth. Except that it was a snapshot of only one draw. It would need to be averaged over time, to make it accurate. I expect the 26 draws available online would be sufficient, but I have no intention of doing that.

I worked out the Dublin figure as one million bonds per 4.37K of population, actually a bit better than Wicklow. I did Galway as well, one million bonds per 8.38K of population. And Limerick, one million per 6.67K of population. Again a one draw snapshot. Populations are taken from the 2022 Census, but with no way of knowing how many are adults over 18 who are entitled to buy bonds for themselves.

April count. The same 18 million bonds BDA to BDR in each of the 4 draws. Not counted was 2 x €1,000 won by these bonds.

Thursday 06. 118 prizes. Highest BDK 12. Lowest BDN 2.

Friday 14. 98. BDA 10. BDF and BDN 2 each.

    Friday 21 127. BDK 11. BDB 4.

    Friday 28. 115. BDG 10. BDD, BDE,BDL & BDN 4 each.

    Highest overall BDK 37 (12,7,11,7). Lowest BDN 17 (2,2,9,4).

72 million bonds won 458 prizes, average per million 6.361. x52 x€50 = €16,538.89. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck equals €264.62. Nearest to 5 x €50.

The oldest bond to win on 05 May is 762826. I took a look to see if it had any unclaimed prizes. None, but 762931 has 2 x €50. I think the €50 prizes started in 2012, so two scenarios possible. Either that bond from 1957 never won before 2012. Or it had previous winners, and the owner only became uncontactable after 2012.

The map is always interesting, winnings in the 6 counties of Northern Ireland are nearly always in single figures, Monaghan 33 but in neighbouring County Down only 2, I suppose the majority population purchase UK premium bonds.

Nothing for me this week. nothing in 2023, last win 2 December 2022 €50 euro.

  • Registered Users Posts: 648 ✭✭✭POBox19

Sometimes its even lower, but why would they invest their £s in Prize Bonds? In the May Premium Bond draw Northern Ireland had 135 winners of 'high value' prizes of £1000+. Of those 2 won £25k, 5 won £10k and 11 got £5k. If average luck applied that would see 43,000 prizes or about £2.8million won by NI investors every month.

Prize Bonds this month will award 4 prizes of €50k, 40 of €1k and 40 of €500, from a total prize fund €1,222,400.

    Nothing for me today.

No winners from the first two million bonds issued, which is unusual. Oldest winner is B212097, second oldest B804289 €50. But that person never cashed their €75 cheque the last time they won.
