Next weekend sees the Irish Team in action in the European Team Championships in Turkey

    Team list

What do people think of the team? Selection right or any weird selections? No 5000 man listed yet?

Great to see alot of youth in the team shows encouraging signs.

Finishing 8th of 12 last year how do people reckon we will fair?

Here are the teams in our pool:

    Belgium
    Croatia
    Finland
    Greece
    Hungary
    Netherlands
    Norway
    Romania
    Slovenia
    Switzerland
    Turkey

Few interesting match ups. One of the Borlee brothers will square off against Gillick week after he is running in DL in New York

Stephen Scullion is doing the 5k. Although is anyone else not surprised that Cragg has not been called up to do the 5k. Surely we could do with someone of his vast experience in this race. He has competed in two Olympic finals and many European finals after all.

I believe this is on the BBC this weekend...

    EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

    Saturday 18 June
    BBC One (1345-1710)

    Sunday 19 June
    BBC Two(1345-1730)

    Ailis McSweeney is out

I think we have enough talent in the team to avoid the drop. We should win plenty of points on the track anyway across all distances. I always look forward to this event, hopefully we will see a few P.B.s by the end of it.

Unfortunately this will show the top division with GB France etc. Usually have to find a stream for the Division 1

Such a shame there are no walk events for the European Team Championships. Having Rob and Olive there would go a long way to making promotion a more realistic goal.

Looking forward to seeing the form of the Irish team, be very interesting to see how likes of McBrearty, Galligan, O'Lioniard, Foroughi get on at this level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

The Irish team looks very strong for the weekend. Kelly Proper is out unfortunetly, but I still feel we should be aiming for a good finish on the table, above half way maybe!

Looking forward to a few performances in particular:

Derval as she open she season, Hession and Gillick to see if they can knock a chunk of their SB, Britton and Rielly after their exploits in the diamond league.

Pity Cragg isn't down for the 5k as I think this could have being a definite full points.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 oedipod

Am I alone in not weeping that Cragg isn't running the 5k? There aren't too many points up for grabs for a DNF. :o

That said, his recent 13:12 would've been useful!!

Also, 12 points from Chamney last year, who's now recovering from injury.

With a full strength squad, I'd say we could make top 6. But with withdrawals and absences, I can't see us making the top 8.

    I predict 10th at best.

Obviously. But we don't have the strength in depth.

Pherekydes is right, even at full strength and walking events included we would not challenge for promotion. We don't have enough in the field. Its all about survival and non-relegation.

I'd be pretty confident we won't get relegated in any case.

The big names need to kick start their seasons (Gillick and Hession).

Also not having Gillick in the relay is a completely avoidable withdrawal. What an absolute waste that is.

You should be alone. Most people would be happy to see one of the best 5k runners in Europe on our team. A near certain full points in the 5k if Cragg was there.

It wil be interesting to see how Ciaran O'Lionaird goes (if he competes) in the 3k after his experience at NCAA.

It's a very young Irish team on the mens side anyway - Smyth, Scullion, O'Lionaird, Crowe, McBrearty all early in their careers.

I don't think we will be go down but avoiding relegation is definately the only realistic target and it will be tight I suspect.

Neither Gillick nor Hession willl be favourites in their respective races (facing Ndure and Borlee) and a lot of our stronger athletes are facing tough competition (Smyth also faces Ndure, Derval face Vukicevic, Cullen faces Roman, Galligan faces Hak).

We need some of our younger athletes and field eventers to come through with well needed points and we have no tradition of this happening, especially in the field.

Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of Irish field events than me can give us an optimistic opinion of our chances there at the weekend.

McSweeney out, so Foster tripling up over 100m and 200m, and the 4x1oom relay.

    Gillick runs the 4X400.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

Came across this on the AAI site

Any of these times in danger of being revise?

Personally i see a few going. Mcbrearty should come close to Nolans benchmark as well as the 4x400 possibly

On the womens side the 100 and 200 would be at risk and the S/C

Britton could beat 15:37 in the women's 5K, she's done 15:31 this season.

At start of the season you would fancy Gillick to top 45.96, will he ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭notsofast

That doc only goes up to 2007 unfortunately , just checked a few results from last year. Gillick ran 45.29 and Derval ran 12.8, both faster than the times on the doc. Bags I not update it.

Derval's 12.80 was wind aided slightly with a 2.1 measurement. Its funny, that time showed she was in form and that she would be a danger at the Europeans, but the likes of Ian O'Riordan etc just looked at her official SB of 12.96 or whatever it was and went on about her only being 16th in Europe going into the championships. Silly stuff! You'd wonder how closely journalists follow the athletes progress or do they just look at the IAAF top lists and form an opinion from that!

Regardless of what the 400m record is, I should surely hope Gillick runs significantly faster than 45.9x!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Run4YourLife

Really hope Gillick runs a good 45 and that Hession gets a season's best. Unconfirmed rumours that Proper hasn't turned up again and that Foster has pulled herself from relay squad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

Have to admit I don't know much about these championships. Are they just european teams competing against each other? What's the ultimate prize or bragging right that comes from them?

Sorry for the stupid questions :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Basically all teams compete in every event. There are 12 in our group. Based on the finishing order, you get pts for your team, 12pts down to 1pt. All points added up. Team with most wins. There are 4 divisions. Promotion and relegation. Its the best gauge of the strength of a nation in the sport. We are mid table in the 2nd tier. It will be good to stay there.

What time does it start at Irish time?

What are the prospects of getting live feed for this? No mention of it on myp2p at the moment. Only the premier division taking place in Stockholm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭wgtomblin

It runs from approx 3 to 7pm Irish time on both days. BBC and Eurosport are covering the premier division. No idea where to find live streaming of 1st division, i'm afraid. www.izmir2011.org should have results as they come through.

No sign of Blanca Vlasic on the start list

The time difference is 2 hours, so the timetable runs from 13:45 to 18:00 today and 13:30 to 17:40 tomorrow.

I hope the athletes don't suffer too much in the heat. The current temp seems to be 30, with 32 expected tomorrow.

    Good luck to all.

Excellent start to the day, two new huge PBs for our 400mH

Jessie Barr with 57.21 and Tim Crowe with 51.59. Hopefully now this will inspire the rest of the team. Superb performances from these two youngsters!
