    Hi Boardsies,

Right I'm new to this thread but Im looking for Cars similar to 1.3 Glanza Turbos, not so much the Shape or anything but More the power it gives.

Im not that into Modified cars but I would love a Civic/Golf/Focus all 3 door
that gave the same kinda feel or whisper it has when changing gears

Thanks for the responses if any? :)

By saying "whisper when changing gears" do you mean a blow off valve?
If not or even if you do go for a 1.6 Dohc Vtec car if your insurance allows you and you will never look back ;).
As for Glanza's/Starlets i have no time for them and Golf's never did much for me either.

Unhelpful answer is there are lots of Kei class and small turbo motors.

    Renault 5 GT
    Metro Turbo
    Micra Turbo
    Vitz Turbo
    Diahatsu Chirade gtti
    ......

As for whispering between gear if you mean a dump valve any car with a turbo is capable of running an atmospheric dump valve.

Though the vast majority of cars are fitted with a quiet one from the factory.

Tbh I'm not looking for something pure boy racer-ish,
I was just amazed at the amount of power a little 1.3 car had with 5 people in it... You wouldnt feel the same "Umph" everytime you touched the accelerator a Focus or Other same sized cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Punto GT

TBH there isn't much out there similar to a Glanza with a power upgrade.
If you're going non Turbo a Mirage MIVEC would be worth a look.

A Saxo VTS or Pegeout 106 GTi might be good candidates, close enough weight wise to a Glanza and power isnt too far out on stock figures either.

A Glanza would be alot easier to get more power from though and probably be more reliable to boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Hoggy1000

Yeah I dont really like the "Look" a Glanza gives of a person tho..

Tbh Im Looking at buying either a Focus/ Golf, Maybe TDI?

But I would love the feeling of the sudden power ... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

    Sudden power...in a TDI??!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭DjKlubster

I must say i have a bit of a guilty pleasure for the toyota vitz turbo... :o

Although very hard come accross in ireland..usual ones that pop up are only 1.5 straights.. But if you look in the right place you'll find them and nice ones at that..

But i am a big fan of the Vtecs...

But my personnel opinion i rather have a glanza than buy a punto or focus etc..

So my advice would be if your not buying a glanza..then buy a Vitz or something Vtec.. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Hoggy1000

I know theres no Sudden power from a Tdi? I was saying i would prefer the feeling of Sudden power :/

The only problem with buying something Vtec is Tax, Insurance, And on top of that it is an animal on fuel :(

Tax would be less than a 2L TDI but obviously more than a Glanza, and they are heavy on juice. I've never owned a Glanza to compare the efficiency

one my mates has a 1.6 dohc vtec and he reckons its not that bad on juice...But ya they're not going to be easy on the juice but i dont think there as bad on it as people think..

haha and they're no point saying what everyone says.. ''Stay outta vtec and ya'll be sound''...ha if you drive a vtec your never going to leave vtec.. ;)

OP you ain`t gonna find a powerful car that`s not hard on fuel! The leon cupra r have 200 odd bhp and about 30mpg which ain`t to bad. Not the prettiest cars though!

gorgeous car the cupra is aswell.. :p was just talking to a lad at the weekend aswell who drives toyota celica (i know its a big difference to a glanza..lol) but e reckons he gets just over 500 miles to a tank which isnt that bad considering its de new shape and the 190 Bhp version...He was tempting me alot to buy it off him :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I can say from experience, VTECs like their juice. The best I can get from mine is 26MPG

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,043 ✭✭✭2 Espressi

Ignis or Swift Sport, there was a Daihatsu turb iothing as well : http://www.google.com/search?aq=1&oq=daihatsu+YR&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=daihatsu+yrv+turbo

I get 32 at best on an ek4 going slow.

So to be clear you want a big hatch(modern hatches are big in comparison to 90s hatches) car with lots of power and a small capacity engine and fuel economy.

Not an easy ask a 1.4 TSI is all i can think of really.

    Just some simple maths here:
    55 litre tank
    12 gallons
    500 miles a tank
    42mpg average

Claimed mpg from toyota is 42 mpg extra urban and 24 urban.

your friend is either driving like a nun exclusively on open roads or hes lying!

I know most people on here h'ate the TDI's, but they are econimical. I know the tourque band is narrow (1900-2500RPM) or so. But they respond well to mapping. A PD 100 can be mappet to produce about 115hp and it will still return 6-7L/100km (sorry no Idea what this number is in gallons).
That bit of higher torque does "feel" good I find (even though it dont last before you have to shift up). Coming out of corners in 3rd is a pleasure .

The handling though can be describes as woefull, however after a few month you will dial it (all you need is to transfer SOME weight forward on the entry and it generally goes where you point it).

Also concider PD 130 and insurance allowing PD 150

That charade price is nuts. Body is loads of different shades!
Without the turbocharger would it be worth €500?

I got to drive one once. Different but no way would I pay that for it.

Iv nearly bought a micra st twice and talked myself out of it both times. Never drove one but been in one and it was better than I expected

106 GTi are a fantastic little car

I know 3 guys with them, but they all have had to replace the gearbox within a year of ownership, it's a known issue

I think it was Clarkson who said they were geared for as low a 0-60 as they could get which means there's going to be a lot of trashed ones out there

prices have really bottomed out compared to when two of those lads bought them

I reckon a Lupo GTi could be fun, prices on pistonheads seems to be around the 3k mark which is a bit much for a 10 year old car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,924 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

I don't think there is any real world replacement to glanza in Ireland. Small engine turbo hatch.

I would suggest buying Toyota cynos and droping turbo on it or a convertion from glanza.

One of the lads had 1.3 turbo cynos with 190 hp and 200+*+ torque dyne proved. Was lovely thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

Renault 5 is always an option but I reckon if I was looking for a small quick car, I'd consider a 106 GTI, never driven one but have only heard great things about them. Can be got very cheap too and not the hardest to insure.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2211386

    or a Saxo VTS

Yeah I love how the car drives, just dont like the look or the impression people get when they see a person driving a Glanza

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,689 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

    Then its a simple.

Buy one with a reasonable spec and a front mount already on it.

Fit a granny spec bonnet and grill.
    Unassuming alloys
    Put an oem resirc valve
    Spray intercooler black
Make sure its not factory tinted and remove the tints.

    Sell dump valve and bonnet

Now you have the image of an unassuming nun.

There's 2 Cynos on DD at the moment, both around a grand.
One automatic with low mileage, and one manual with a fair bit on it.

Even without Turbo they're great acceleration. Low COG. Fun to drive.

I wouldn't be mad about the look of the Glanza either. It's a shame because they're brilliant little cars.

Hatred for diesel's here really annoys me!

Especially when fella's with mighty fast 157bhp Civic's like yourself come out with comments like that

My friend is looking for a new car and we went for a test drive in a mapped 06 Astra Sri 1.9 diesel the other day that put out 194bhp and 410nm from a custom map on the dyno, it was a quick car and it would have no problem at all keeping with a Glanza turbo above stock putting out 160-165bhp.

I would prefer to drive that diesel anyday over your Civic Midnight, which it would eat by the way;)

Can never understand the love of the non Type R's, DC5, DC2, EK4 etc are just incredible machine's but the rest, what's the point.Might as well save up for a proper car.

Anyway OP if you can get a Glanza is good nick go for it, with a few mod's they are quick alright, but if you cant have a look at this.

Far left choice. Nippier then you'd think and dirt cheap to tax and insure.

    But think of the power-to-weight!

They're surprisingly roomy on the inside, although that one is way overpriced.

Lemon as in dodgy car. You must have a fairly well modded Glanza to keep up with Type Rs and the like!

Erm, Mazda RX-7's are 1.3 Twin Turbo :D goes like a 2.6 cos it's a rotary engine and taxed as a 1.7 (can get them re taxed as a 1.3 if your lucky).

And will annihilate everything listed above (when it's working :)).
