Quick tip for the dev's (who are probably aware of this already). Do a backup and restore rather than an update. Error 3002 if you don't.

this was always the case wasn't it? as this is my first beta since joining apple dev.

in the middle of doing it now, ipad 2 iOS 5 beta download now as well

all i can say now is thank jobs for delta updates from now on.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,643 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

Probably right Creamy do I've updated the thread title to something more useful.

Tip 2, first login/connection is really slow, be patient.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,643 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

Also be prepared for lots of initial (slow) synching, and plenty of what looks like hanging while it does it.

Probably down to the fact that all the apps are bring restored from my backup.

first things i've noticed that weren't mentioned in the keynote:

    * maps now have a print option.
    * off/on sliders are now rounded.
    * safari now has open link in background.

Any sign of a quick slider to turn on/off Wifi/BT/3G? Would be perfect if they added that in notification area.

How does one get a hold of the beta?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 23,248 Mod ✭✭✭✭godtabh

is it easy to become a developer just to get the beta?

Pay $99 and you're in. There are sites out there that'll add you to their developer list for a fee, http://imzdl.com/ will do it for $7, tempted to try it out this evening.

Please do not install the beta on your day-to-day device. It's prerelease software, which means bugs, crashes, and potential data loss.

Ah Vinny, thats half the fun! ;)

Seriously though, heed the advice. Don't think this is your usual level of Apple update.

i am seeing a few youtube videos today of phones sucessfully updated...but there are some slow downs and littles freezes etc, and the poster below as an example throwing comments like "its in beta so there are some little glitches"..."and newstand doesnt work yet"..."on a 3gs the photo editing doesnt work yet"..."no tabs on safari on 3gs yet".."i dont see imessage"

of course the above may be because its a 3gs phone, i'm including that video below that i found (foreign), but why should a 3gs act any differently than a 4..apart from speed ??

anyhoo...point of the post....this just backs up what vinny has posted for me.

At least notifications work on the 3GS. I can live without tabs in Safari. The 3GS wouldn't have been able to handle them anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭coolegrain

but dont other third party browsers with tabs work ok on a 3gs ?

Yeah, but not particularly well. There's a noticeable performance hit that sends me back to Safari every time. I'm sure they work much better on the iPhone 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭dave oc

I thought the new tabbed browsing was only for iPad?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,698 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Yeah, actually your right. Tabs are only on iPad. From the Apple site:
    Tabbed browsing
Move between sites using tabs on iPad.
I suspected as much during the keynote because they only showed pictures of tabs on the iPad. The iPhone screen is probably too small for them anyway. They are more useful on the iPad.

Even though you registered, you still have to enroll in the iOS Developer Program, which is $99 a year.

Also does anybody know the reliability of any of the sites which activate your UDID?

Seriously folks, I'm not an iPhone developer but I am a software developer. Don't be running mad to run dev builds on your iPhone unless you're using it for testing of your own software. You'll be far happier down the line when you get the official release. Running Dev builds can be a world of hurt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

there was a big warning on the beta download page that you can't restore to iOS 4 if you install iOS 5 Beta.

seems you dont have to be a dev to get IOS 5

can anyone find out how to do a wireless sync? can't seem to find it?

i have located the iTunes sync but it's grey out until iphone/ipad is docked. perhaps it's not implemented yet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,208 ✭✭✭✭aidan_walsh

Perhaps. Have you updated to iTunes 4.3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,866 ✭✭✭v10

If I was to enroll in the iOS Developer Program @ $99 a year, how many UDID can I register on that account ? Only ask because I have a few iOS devices ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,706 ✭✭✭120_Minutes

    link

DO NOT TRY THIS! it does work, but it disables phone abilities, and everytime you restart your phone you need to go through the process again. and when you plug your phone into itunes it says it requires itunes 10.5 to sync, but its only up to 10.2! going back to 4.3 now...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,155 ✭✭✭Stainless_Steel

Why people rush to get developer betas is beyond my comprehension. If you are not testing software then it is a waste of bloody time. When the OS is ready you will update through iTunes. Same people will moan how crap iOS 5 is and that it's glitchy pfft...

Think for the wireless sync to work you need to have the iPhone or iPad docked/charging. Bit stupid in my opinion as it defeats the point of having it wireless if it needs to be charging.

    +1

If you look at the video on apple.ie around iOS5 it show some guy docking his phone before synching....seems very strange thing to do.....

Wireless sync is currently disabled. It's in the release notes.

ahh thank you Vin, i didn't read them must start reading them.

another thing i've noticed and it's a small one but the new sim locked notification looks pretty nice.

Would presume the back up only when charging is to stop the battery draining. If it did start draining batteries during the night when not plugged in people would be complaining about it eating there battery when sleeping.

I think its a good idea. I wouldn't want it randomly updating all the time. At night when plugged in is perfect.

you have to hit a button to wirelessly sync, you don't have sufficient battery then it's your fault not apple's even then surely apple could prompt you if you have say <= 10% of battery that backup needs at least 20%-40% or whatever value.

Does anyone know if airplay mirroring for the iPad 2 requires iOS 5 beta on the appleTV 2? can't seem to get it to work bar the usual airplaying video (have 4.3 on AppleTV)

    Does ios5 update baseband ?

    Does ios5 update baseband ?
baseband in the iOS 5 beta is 04.11.04.

i have no idea if that's an updated version or not as i'm a factory unlocked device.

Wouldn't recommend installing it, its raping my battery at the rate of about 1% a minute and is permanently warm. Other people have had similar issue, something using the CPU constantly. I've also seen bugs with the camera and the Phone as well as various freezes and reboots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭fox007

Just read on twitter the Devs have a teathered jailbreak for mac only at this stage.

redsn0w jailbreak for iOS5 beta released: is.gd/6eek4Y ... Mac devs only (please don't pirate Apple software!)

Do a restore, no problems for me.

mine seemed to be fine for the first couple of days but yesterday and today the battery has pretty much died within 2 - 3 hours with little or no usage ..

also I'm finding it's charging much slower .. i.e. an hour on charge is giving me about 25% increase

Has anybody downloaded iOS 5 and installed as a non developer, there are a number of websites showing how to do it...?

Seems easy to do, but just wondered if anybody on here had tried it and could advise?

Can I roll back to 4.3.3 if it doesn't work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Going to wait until the official release. Interesting that the dev community have already jailbroken it!

I went with these guys: http://udidit.tumblr.com/. They added my UDID within 5 minutes.

You simply send them your UDID and download iTunes 10.5 and iOS 5. The software is running seamlessly on my iPhone 4.

If you want to return to 4.3.3 just download the relevant firmware from the web and restore your phone.

Anyone else running the Beta come across this?
Only seems to pop up with 3 to 3 calls!
Calls from 3 to any other network seem to be fine.
