    Hi folks.
I'm just wondering what would be the rough cost of getting a mirror resprayed to match the car?
I need a new mirror and I saw one on ebay that has primer on it. It just needs sprayed. I'm just looking for a rough cost so I know roughly how much I'm gona be out of pocket.
Its a 9 year old red car if that makes a difference.

Would I be able to get a can of spray paint near enough the same colour? If so I would nearly give it a go myself.

Wouldnt look right with spray paint. Id imagine a mirror would only cost €100-200

    I was kinda thinking that.
100-200 for a respray or total?

    What do you mean total?

1-200 Euro? If we're just talking about a wing mirror plastic cover (It's hard to know unless you link to the item in question) - 50 quid, tops.

Total as in buying the mirror and getting it painted.
I can get the mirror for 50 + 20 shipping. If the spray is going to cost 100-200 I'll just get some red spray paint for 10 and live with the odd colour.

I can't access ebay at work. Its an electric mirror for an opel agila.
Yea its just a plastic unit.

If you are sourcing the mirror yourself then it shouldnt set you back anymore than €200 to have the mirror bought, sprayed and fitted.

I can fit the mirror myself so 0 cost there.
I know its going to be 70 odd to get it to my door.
I just haven't a clue about the spraying costs for anything. Well I know my friend got a dent out of his door and got it resprayed for 250.

If you take your time, you can get good results from rattle cans. I had scuff marks on both and now you'd never know.

Mirrors are not the worst to do with cans, but I got mine done for €25 a few weeks ago in Cork by a proper spray place.

I might be able to scrape that together this month so.

    Hi PaintDoctor...

I wonder if I could take you up on that offer sometime? I have a mirror already for My car here,,but I need another one.. So I need to save for that, and then put some money away for the painting.

How much you talking for both? It's the usual colour coded mirrors jobbie,,off an Octavia.

    Cheers...

SO I finally got a mirror last week.

I'm thinking I might just get some colourcoded rattle cans from halfords and do it myself.
I do have some questions tho.

Where can I find the colour code for my car?
What else do I need other than the can? Do I need laquor? Any kind of undercoat needed?

What type of car is it?

On the Agila, your colour code should be on the B pillar behind either the driver or passenger door. This guide should help :

Thanks for that. I'll look for the code when I get home from work.

Do I just need a spray to match or do I need something else aswell?

You'll need primer, some fine 800 grade sandpaper to sand out any lumps in the primer that will inevitably appear, and your aerosol matched to colour. Just dust on light coats from about 40 cm away, don't be inclined to do it all in one thick coat. Leave 15 mins between coats for drying.

All sounds very do-able. I'll swing by tomorrow evening and pick up that stuff so. If the weather holds I'll spray it on Friday.
I thought I'd need to leave longer between coats.

How long should I leave the primer to dry?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Primer should be dry enough to sand after 20 mins.

That works out well, should be able to get it sorted in one day so.

Would I be better with this or this for primer?
It's just the plastic backing of the mirror I'm doing so I don't think I need anything fancy.

jasus save yourself a lot of money and spray it yourself.its only a mirror.and it will be off the car when spraying so you can keep at it till its right.
Few sheets of fine grit sandpaper + primer + paint + lacquer = €30 approx but the satisfaction of doing it yourself = priceless

The plastic primer's the best option. I was out of my normal stuff recently and had to use that - it's not the worst TBH!

is there a special primer for bumpers ie a bit more flexible to stop crazing ,cracking occurring if bumper is flexed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

    Etch primer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Etch primer's for metal, not plastic. Use a high built aerosol primer for bumpers, something like U-Pol's Hi5, or HB Body's HiCote range.

Thanks Owen. I got the colour code, found the product on halfords website. I just need to call in and get it. I can't see the grading for the sandpaper on the website so I'll look instore when I'm in.

I'll put up some pics when I get sorted.
