You gotta love the way people come out with the same "oh no, not these threads again". Reality bites people, get real, is the massacre of civilians not worthy enough of its own thread.

Yup, I even seen one Israeli leper laugh his head off.

Another tried to drive his tank over someone, but left his foot on the brake.

Seen one Israeli chic and thought to myself, if I was an Israeli I'd throw a leg over her!.

    Israel kills civilians. What's new?

Israel defenders try to divert thread with red herrings. What's new?

RIP to all of those killed. This is unfortunately an all too routine occurrence. The IDF has learned many things, except to appreciate the value of life.

Killing of unarmed protesters, is rightly almost universally condemned when the likes of Assad are responsible, but the moment Israel does the same damn thing, its vigorously defended for some bizarre reason.

The protests against Israel, are very much the same as those in Syria, Bahrain and Libya etc, but the reaction couldn't be anymore different

Its terrible that these protesters were murdered, and its rather sad there are those who will defend such this kind of thing.

    This again?

Is there another thread about it? I remember one from a few weeks ago when the IDF murdered a load of people, but don't think I've seen one about the IDF murdering a load of people today.

Maybe they should just cut down on the old murdering of civilians and then perhaps the threads will die off.

I think I'm pretty moderate when it comes to the Israel/Palestinian question, and believe Israel certainly has a lot to answer for, and that Netanyahu is a major obstacle to peace, but these weren't just ordinary protestors making a point, but rather people trying to force their way across an international border into a neighbouring state. I'm pretty certain that, were something similar to happen along the US/Mexican, or Russian/Chinese borders, or practically any other international boundary, the eventual reaction would be the same. Obviously, there's context to the whole thing, but could the peoplecondemning Israel for this incident, please explain how they should have reacted? How would those who condemn this action by israel have protected the integrity of the border in such a scenario?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 882 ✭✭✭LondonIrish90

I wonder what those Syrians who crossed the border into Israeli territory in an aggressive manner thought might await them?

Especially when you remember the very reason the Golan Heights are occupied by Israel to this day, it wasn't a very wise move.

They did no such thing, no International border was crossed, the Golan Heights is occupied territory, and the people crossing are refugee's who are stateless due to Israel's actions.

Also, they were unarmed, and as such shooting them, makes Israel no better than the likes of Assad etc, and they should be treated exactly the same imho.

I agree with alot of what you say and of course things need to change there, i'm just curious at to why do you guys always concentrate your efforts on this conflict alone when there is many more atrocities being committed across the world every day?

    Thanks

Maybe you should cut down on the generalities and take a good quaff of reality.

Maybe you should kind of understand what is happening out there before you put your big foot in the thread eh?

I'm sorry, but that just is not true. The people attempting to cross the border are not the same as those protesting in Syria and Libya. The actions are entirely different. There was quite a large protest this week in jerusalem against Netanyahu's Palestinian policies, and there was no attempt to suppress it. That was akin to what's happening in other ME countries, ie people expressing their opinions on the streets. Attempting to breach a border isn't the same at all.

A desire to see an end to injustice. Why I have particular interest in the Palestinian/Israeli conflict is probably because of lack of accountability, which is always key to drive on international solidarity with the oppressed.

I think you'll find that on a global scale - there is great interest in the conflict. It's not unique to a few posters on boards.ie

You're not considering the context. Israelis, Palestinians, and their bordering neighbours have to put up suicide bombings on quite a regular basis. How were these soldiers to know if these protesters were unarmed or strapped with explosives under their clothes? They simply cannot take that chance.

They shot them before they even breached the first of 2 barbed wire fences.

    That's acceptable in your view?

I am rarely personally attacked in regards to my views on any other topic. You speak against Israel in anyway, and people will call you every name under the sun, and as such I will reply to those attacking me personally in kind.

I have commented on plenty of topics, and on this topic any view against Israels actions, will result in personal attacks, and there will be another side who will disagree, and as such result in far more commentary, as opposed to say Assad's forces in Syria murdering protesters in the same manner, where almost no one will disagree, and where as on this topic, excuses are already being made.

The land doesn't legally belong to Israel. By the reasoning above, I presume you'd have no problem if the Syrians/Palestinians used force to reclaim the land which is rightfully theirs?

Of course not.. those people would be terrorists, right?

I don't concentrate solely on the Middle-East conflict. It just so happens to be one that I have a strong interest in, and is one that is key to global peace. It's irrelevant in the broad scheme of things - because the conflict is one that generates valid interest across the globe.

Your ruse is subtle, but I spot it nonetheless. So there is now an onus on you to explain why someone cannot have a valid interest in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Basically, get to the point.

This is the video we are talking about:

In fairness they do comment on other conflicts, however it beats me that one regular poster in AH is banned from discussing politics in AH but Wes solely concentrates his efforts on Israel when he bother's to grace AH with his presence and is allowed get away with that.

As regards Israeli threads, most of us are sick to our hind teeth of them.

I mentioned it in the feedback thread - they're a political hot potato and really do belong in the political forum where there isn't so much tolerance to the knee jerk reactionists with the same discussions attract here in AH.

Of course not.. those people would be terrorists, right?

Well, you see, there's the nub of the whole issue. You believe that the land isn't Israel's, and therefore any action they take on that land is illegitimate. There's nothing wrong in that opinion per se, but it does mean that you're not so much against Israel using force to protect that border, but against the very notion of Israel protecting it at all. In response to my question of how you would have Israel react, you'd have them do nothing and watch as the border was breached. Again, quite a legitimate view, but it does mean that Israel will always be in the wrong in these issues, no matter how justified their actual actions, in a particular instance might appear, or indeed, actually be.

No, they are not the same. You claim that israel shoots unarmed protestors. Yet why did it not respond to those protesting this week in the centre of Jerusalem? The reason is, that those protestors weren't attemtping to cross what Israel perceives as a national boundary. You can claim that the actions were wrong, and condemn them, but you cannot claim that the actions of those attemtping to breach that border are the same as those in Cairo or Hama. If they are, then they are the same as those in Jerusalem, and yet the reaction to each "march" was entirely different.

Even if it were to be true that Israel had a legitimate claim to the territory (which it does not), but suppose it were to be true - it still would not give merit to shooting and killing 4 civilians. There are alternative ways for crowd control - but it's all too of an occurrence for the IDF to go above and beyond what's necessary. This is one of those cases.
