Get out of the fast lane!

I would consider myself quite a placid and rational person, however, when driving on motorways - particularly the M1 into Dublin I get really annoyed that drivers don't understand the rules of motorway driving. The other day a car held up the whole network by driving at 100kph on the outside lane quite oblivious to the light flashing and beeping going on around her. The road ahead of her was clear, no one could get passed her. People like this should be dragged out of their cars and made to push them for the rest of their journey.

Does anyone else here get really angry at idiots hogging the 'fast' lane?

Im sorry but 100 is not bad seen as you can only do 20 extra if your law abiding.
i dunno what lane you exactly talking about. but if they were in the left lane i think they have a right to do the speed they wish providing its not snail pace 100 no less . least they will probably live if something horrible should go wrong up ahead. like the man who passed us out speeding, we caught upto him only to find he made shiz of him and his car.

    It's called an overtaking lane.

Which means if you stay in it at 600 miles an hour you are still misusing it.

Actually if you read the OP, they called it the 'fast' line (inverted commas) suggesting they know it's not what it's called

They were in the overtaking lane, which is the right hand lane.

It is NOT illegal to pass on the left on a motorway if traffic on the right lane is moving slowly.

Here is a quote from the RSA website:

    Overtaking

Overtake only on the right, unless traffic is travelling in slow moving queues and the traffic queue on your right is travelling more slowly than you are. If you intend to move from a slower lane to a faster lane, adjust your speed first.

I for one really enjoy a bit of road rage. I'm a quiet person by nature but I scream verbal obsceneties from the top of my lungs at a perceived slight or bad driving on the road.
It gives me huge satisfaction and my roars are often followed by bursts of laughing. People look at me like I'm crazy when I drive and when I drive I am in fact crazy.
So I would kind of enjoy people driving in "the fast lane" just so I could let a few roars out and punch the roof a few times

Sorry, yes you are right. I should have said 'overtaking' lane instead of fast lane. The problem with drivers going slow and hogging it remains the same though!

    Lane Discipline
icon.jpg Video Lesson - Lane discipline on Motorways
When driving along motorways always remain in the left lane unless you are travelling faster than traffic ahead of you and it is safe to move over to the right lanes. If you use these lanes you must return to the left lane as soon as it is safe to do so.
It is bad practice to try and stay in the overtaking lanes for normal driving. This annoys other users because they can see that you are avoiding the empty lanes on the left, or never using your mirrors to see the tailbacks that you are causing. Remember the two-second rule. Four seconds will give you time to react easily and you will be more relaxed.

Note the rule specifically requires you to be in "slow moving queues". That is very very different to just moving slower.
The meaning of 'slow' is not defined but is generally taken to mean crawling traffic, you passing at 110km/h while the other lane doing 100km/h is definitely not a slow moving queue.

Lane 1 on the m50 - are you joking me? It's full of stopped cars every evening trying to get to the off ramps especially between n7 and n3 exits.

    Agree on so many levels.

Jut to throw it in there too are those who decide to do 30kmph on the motorway. Was almost part of a 4-6 car pileup yesterday by Cashel. Not Entirely sure what happened but the car 2 ahead of us jammed the breaks and que at least 4 cars trying to not collide while decelerating from 120 to 30. Old man in his tiny car cruising away oblivious to what happened.

And what the heck is with the 60kmph on the Mallow road. That is good for at least 100.

The standard of driving was Scary country wide.

Sounds like the car 2 ahead wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him and was forced to jam on instead of braking or overtaking in good time. Poor driving on his part which turned a risky situation into a dangerous one.

I wrote the below in anticipation of the above and posted it unaware of this response. (you missed the turning left bit but you're mostly correct)

[illegal] unless turning left or if the traffic in the overtaking lane is queueing.

as bad as a slow driver that hasnt a fcking clue to whats going on in the fast lane, the boy racers that tailgate about a foot away from them or the guys that bob and weive through traffic are by far more dangerous!!!

I hate tailgating bastards and I make them back off by stabbing the brake pedal with my foot as a method of saying 'back the **** bitch'.

I don't give a fcuk what people think of my method - the fact is - the law is completely on my side. If I decide to slam on my brakes for whatever reason and someone hits the back of me - well fcuk you - pay up bitch.

Well the roads are so feckin dangerous these days that you have to drive as fast as you can to cut down on your journey time thereby decreasing the likelihood of an accident

Rubbish. You clearly haven't a clue what you're talking about.

There are many reasons why a person will slam on their brakes with no apparent reason.

If a person says in court 'a dog/cild/cat ran out in front of the car and I slammed on the brakes' or 'there was a wasp in the car and it landed on my face so I jammed on' then it's the peson behind's (you) fault if they hit the car.

If you read the thread properly (or in your case get someone to explain it to you) then you will see that tail-gaters do indeed hit a nerve with me.

As I've said before I've had two cars written off and sustained considerable physical and psycological injuries from tail gaters.

That's why I have a zero tolerance approach to it.

You hit the back of my car?. Your fault - see you in court.

And if your actions cause a fatality on the road, maybe even someone in another lane who wasn't tailgating?

Roads are dangerous enough without people like you on it.

What do you mean by 'people like you'?

I find it tiresome having 'debates' with people who are obviously wrong but I really feel the need to educate the people who are blissfully wrong about simple issues.
