'BANK' Holiday

Whats wrong with this title? Always looks forward to bank holidays but the name, for some strange reason, bugs me! I could almost say that knowing its a bank holiday ruins it a little. We need a new name for our few freebie days off work the 'bank?' give us. suggestions welcome...

Well, June 6th, 2011 is a Public Holiday, so you could call it that. A public holiday is not the same thing as a bank holiday. A public holiday is an official state holiday as declared by law. A bank holiday is a colloquialism (probably because "bank holiday Monday" rolls off the tongue better than "public holiday Monday") that simply refers to the fact that banks will be closed (thus, historically, all shops/offices would close).

There are no Bank Holidays in Ireland, that is a British term.

We have Public Holidays. British culture is no ingrained into the Irish that we (they cos I don't) don't even think about it and talk about Bank Holidays, Miles and Pounds still!

oh, and Irish still cheer on Rugby/GAA and Soccer with an English accent too :rolleyes:

Mate, I don't follow Soccer, I live in London and I have more in common with British culture than Irish culture. My point is that no matter how 'Irish' Irish people think they are, they say and do so many things that are colloquially British.

lol actually I didn't mean the 'still' cheer on sport with an English accent.. I meant they 'do'.. meaning they subconciously give out english/british matterisms without noticing (and then go racing with bins on fire with celtic jerseys!)

Well I cheer with my Irish accent, quite often I hear Irish people cheering in an english accent 'caammm oonnnnn aahhhlaaannd', or rugby fans cheeiring 'munsterrrrr' or 'Leinsterrrr' in english accents. I'm sure theres a thread about it somewhere!

anyway to summarise: People should say Public Holiday rather than Bank Holiday, because Bank Holiday is wrong.

Thats everyday in Dundalk depending on the pub. Only heard yesterday that one of the dodgy pubs has a "homework club" where the parents leave the kids at school, drink all day, then collect the kids and back to the pub where the kids can do their homework upstairs!!!

We do have Bank Holidays in Ireland - Good Friday, a good few days over Christmas and maybe other days too. Banks are closed, but they're not public holidays.

No seriously, they are not called 'Bank Holidays', they are called Public Holidays. Bank Holidays are a term for British Public Holidays. We used to have Bank Holidays back before Independance. But then the government introduced the Holidays (Employees) Act 1939, which replaced Bank Holidays with Public Holidays.

Then, in 1997 the Organisation of Working Time Act came into power, which specifies the nine Public Holidays in which employees are entitled to time off.
