Right I have a tub of protein, still sealed, that's out of date since Sept 09. Think it's alright to give it a bash?

You do know that there's a difference between 'used by' and 'best before'

I would guess it's best before, so you can go nuts with it, it just mightn't taste as nice or mix too well.

My father once found a jar of mustard in the press out by 5 years, he sat down with a spoon and ate it, no ill effects.

If there was no date on it at all you probably would have done what your granny would have done, open, smell it and use your common sense.

Years back I got half a bag of whey off my brother, he kept it in his very damp room with mildew on the wall so while it wasnt out of date the storage conditions were bad. It smelled like very nutty (not very confidence inspiring when smelling a dairy product) but I used it and it was grand.
Have 1 scoop in a shake and see what happens.......
