I'm interested in joining one of the voluntary first aid organisations either OMAC or Red Cross, but was wondering do you have to have previous knowledge of first aid before you join or are they willing to provide training upon joining?

Speaking from the Red Cross perspective, no you don't need any training, justs a willingness to learn; you'll pick up a lot from the other members before you're sent on an official course. Its a commitment to joining an organisation, but in return you'll not only learn first aid to a higher standard than your regular weekend course, but a load of other neat courses too.

That's excellent then. I'm certainly willing to learn, and get involved but feel I don't have the necessary skills at the moment, but would certainly work towards them.

You need to exp or skills. They should teach you everything. How you join Groups would be a VERY local thing. Some might get you to do a course with them as an intro, others will have you tag along at their training nights till they put you on a course.

Best bet if to have a look round locally and see who is more active. There is no "better" org, its quite a local decision.

    Good luck

Agree with the two replies above, no experience necessary, just enthusiasm.

Regarding OMAC, contact any unit member you see in uniform and they'll have details on whom to see about joining and where.

But whichever organisation you join, get ready for fun! :D

With regard to St. John Ambulance, you don't need any training or health care qualification.

Often people think that we are only interested in doctors, nurses and paramedics. This is not the case at all. We have members from all walks of life.

We will teach you everything you need to know.
