    Hey Peeps,

I'm currently trying to lose weight and started to cut the carbs out of my diet but the one im finding hardest is bread . I have some questions here if anyone could help me that would be great

Are wraps as bad for you as bread ?

Are the Wholemeal slice pans still very bad ?

Is brownbread (e.g sodabread or McCambridge fibre) as bad as slice pan?

Or does anyone even know some better replacement ?

Thanks again for all halep people :)

If you want to cut the carbs, the bread has to go. You could still make up a wrap using a big lettuce leaf instead of the tortilla wrap. It's actually really nice.

I believe another name for them is Gunslinger Burrito from The Dark Tower novels.

Wraps are as bad. Possibly worse, because they often have double the calories of a normal slice of bread. Brown pan is about 1% better than white. The dense wholegrain soda breads are slightly better, but you really are better cutting the bread out of your diet.

Try replacing bread with a rye cracker like Ryvita or Finn Crisp as you get used to not eating bread, then reduce those as well.

Yes, absolute shocker for me one day idly reading the back of the wraps packaging (old el paso salsa tortillas) - each wrap has 202 calories - I wasnt expecting THAT!! The wholewheat ones have 205 per wrap.

    Wow, surprised at that!

What about the brown pitta then I wonder? Couldn't be as bad!

The Lidl Acropolis brown pitta breads have 138 calories per pitta.

Tbh - I personally find substituting pittas, wraps, bread etc... with Ryvita works out fine for most uses - Im fond of the Dark Rye myself - only 34 calories a slice - and youre getting good fibre in.

Yes, the basic rye or dark rye crispbread.

Finn Crisp www.finncrisp.com/crispbreads/thin-crisps/finn-crisp-original are pretty nice too.

Oatcakes can also take the edge off - there's fine milled and rough milled. Careful though if you're watching cals as they pack a punch for a small amount. Nice as a snack with hummus or peanut butter etc

WW Brown Bread is 50 odd calories a slice

    That's not really true Eileen.

A made up wrap is the same as a sandwich, 1 wrap v 2 slices of bread, no difference. A better example would be a wrap verses a bread roll, wrap is far better.

I'm not saying they are fine, I'm jsut saying you example is silly.

What were you expecting? Look at the size of them.

I was expecting half that. The ordinary plain ones are approx 140 calories a wrap, so I was very surprised that the wholewheat and salsa ones were over 200.

Theyre not that big, they might have a large circumference, but they are very thin. A slice of bread seems more substantial.

See that's the problem, people assume that wholewheat is less calories, when it rarely is. In reality, wholewheat is more dense, so slice for slice, or wrap for wrap it often weighs more, and is therefore more calories.

Bread is thicker, but its mostly air, again weight counts not volume.

Thanks for all the great advice . I must say i was amazed about the info on wraps . I had a suspician they were bad alright but never taught they were as bad thats just nuts .

I think its ryevita all the way now . Can anyone tell me if natural peanut butter would be good? I seem to be finding mixed information on it as well though mostly good

Natural PB (no additives) is a great source of fats and protein. Just be careful if you're counting you're calories as any nut spread is extremely calorific. You might also try almond butter.

I know holland & barrett sell both of the above, in big tubs too.

Natural peanut butter (and other nut butters) are excellent nutritionally, but they do pack a lot of calories in a small space. Be aware of how much you are eating.

Ryvita with sesame seeds and some natural peanut..nom nom nom. Consume with a pint of water to hand tho as can leave your tongue cemented to top of mouth.
