What's your opinion on people who use recreational drugs?

Was just wondering what peoples opinions were on this.

I'm talking about people who use stuff like weed - cocaine - ecstasy. Assuming that when people take these they don't cause any trouble or sh!t like that and putting aside the issues of putting money into criminals pockets and the damage it does to your health.

I was at a party there recently and a friend of mine was taking cocaine, needless to say he was the life of the party (without making it too obvious he was off his head:pac:). Isn't this very misleading though, wouldn't he just be like the rest of us who weren't on the stuff? I'll be honest and say I have taken the drugs I've already mentioned and many occasions, but I stopped cold turkey because I thought it was stupid to be relying on a substance to have a good night out. Though is it not hypocritical when I would have many drinks on a night out?

    Opinions?

    Junkies.

But not my business, they can do that once it doesn't directly affect me.

If it drastically changes that person and if he/she feel a need to take it to enjoy themselves, then they're idiots. (Just my opinion maaaaaaaaaan).

doesn't bother me really. i mean, people drinking does't bother me, thats a drug isn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,481 ✭✭✭Fremen

Depends on the way the drugs are used, really. If you can't have fun without taking drugs (alcohol included), there's something wrong and you need to re-examine the way you behave.

If you're just having a bit of craic once in a while (no pun intended), I don't see the harm.

What other people want to do is none of business, as long as they keep their drugs away from me.

I'd never touch them myself but each to their own.

I basically dont give two fúcks how much weed you smoke, coke you take, E's you drop...so long as youre not getting behind the wheel of a car or falling under mine.

Just close the door behind you.

Anyone who takes illegal drugs should be reported to the cops straight away. I don't think it should be tolerated in any way. Why do you think there is a drug gang epidemic in Ireland with people shooting each other in pubs and parked cars ?

Don't mind weed. I'm not overly interested in being in the company of anyone on anything stronger, though.

Probably because drugs are illegal, so high profits can be made by gangs.

Don't do drugs myself....people who do need to understand the consequences to society at large....gangland violence...increased deprivation of already deprived areas....chance of addiction increases with every use....increased petty crime...anyone notice the upsurge in herion addicts....more weed users lead to more hard drug users leads to more addicts....

If you are an addict you can't help it. If you are not don't start. If you do start anyway because you're more fun at parties with a buzz on then don't pretend that you are not part of Ireland's gangland problem.

Thats nothing compared with what goes on in the drug producing nations

I don't drink but do grow, smoke and sell my own weed. Take pills and MDMA when there's good stuff around.

Gotta say drink was by far the most devastating drug I've ever experienced, I try not to form a negative opinion about people who drink recreationally but seeing the devastation it has on the individual, family and society I find it hard not to..

Drugs and alcohol are a great aid to having fun otherwise people wouldn't take them. Thats the long and the short of it. But it all ends in tears for many. So overall i'd say stay away from drugs and drink moderately.

    yours sincerely,

Weed-no problem with it, I've smoked grass a few times, never caused me harm, never led me to want to try anything stronger either.
I think that whole "gateway drug" thing is nonsense. Certainly hasn't been for anyone I've ever know who used it anyway.
And I got it from friends who grow their own so no money into gangland criminals pockets. No problem with people who use it, unless they use it every day or something and are too stoned to care about anything else.

Cocaine-would never try it, turns people into boring assholes I believe.
Then there's the whole giving money to criminals aspect that sickens me.

Ecstacy-Do people still use that? never tried it, never want to. Only people I've heard of that use it are scobes in trackies.

I hate quoting House but he's right in this situation.....people who use drugs are living life on their own terms. End of!

I'm not promoting it nor am I condoning it, it's something some people feel the need to do to get through their day, who are we to judge having not lived their lives?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,048 ✭✭✭Da Shins Kelly

Can only speak for myself, but I'd take E or MDMA over alcohol any day of the week. Alcohol makes me much more depressed and sick than E or MDMA has ever made me feel.

    Eh, profit.

Whether you think it should be tolerated or not is moot, demand will continue regardless.

recreational drugs aren't usually used to get you through the day, thats more of a dependence issue there i'd say...

Been there, done them ALL, many times but happily settled down now and wouldnt go back to them days :)

Haha.course they do!..such as a sizeable proportion of the 25-50 year old doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and other professionals at the likes of Electric Picnic this summer, or Forbidden Fruit this weekend. Most of my circle of friends would be professionals in well paid, highly responsible jobs and we'll all be taking either MDMA or pills at Aphex Twin at Forbidden Fruit this weekend.

Coke is a mugs game, overpriced and cut with crap by scumbags. Now if I was back in Colombia again where you can get good quality for 4-5e a gram...that'd be a whole different kettle of fish!

Purely going on my own experience of people who use the following:

Alcohol: Usually normal enough people, many have underlying self esteem issues that can make them unpredictable when under the influence.

    Weed: Usually awesome

Cocaine: Only know a few people who were using it regularly, it pretty much ruined them

Ecstasy: Ok so long as they keep their zombie-like groping to themselves :p

People who never shut up about drugs, whether they take them or not, are the most annoying.

At any given pint in time I make sure to judge people on one, and only one, facet of their personality. Right now, it's whether they follow competitive sports, so drugs doesn't come into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

Just my experience, but the ones I've known have been very boring people.
But of course, I'm not including hash users in that, the ones I know who use it are a big variety of people.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭LighterGuy

I know a few people that smoke hash and weed. I dont like the stuff but hey its their choice.

As for anything more? coke and ectasy? .. again its their choice. But thats madness. You dont know whats in the stuff you get. it gets cut and cut and cut.

Alcohol is easily the most powerful and damaging drug I have taken. Alcohol is bad, it really is. But its OK cos Heineken Corp. and Diagio are listed companies with shiny adverts and sponsor rugby competitions and wholesome stuff like that.

Alcohol is a drug made legal.

Epidemic? What we have is minuscule in comparison to other countries. Look into the working class suburbs of London, Paris or any major US city and tell me how bad ours is in comparison.

I don't think I should get into this argument tbh. All I will say is that I've been down the addiction route personally and can differentiate between acceptable and addicted usage. Also, the term "recreational" for any drug is ultimately subjective....now if you excuse me, I'm going to drink coffee in a dark room for 6 hours while listening to The Smiths!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,039 ✭✭✭Seloth

Tbh I dislike the fact that weed is thrown in with cocaine, ecstasy etc.

A friend of mine got a addicted to speed and a cousin to cocaine...Not a fan.

Weed though,Know plenty that have and do use it and the worst that has happened was a whitey to them...which is only when mixed with drink..and
far more times have they had negative reactions with drink than smoke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,903 ✭✭✭Napper Hawkins

I have drank alcohol, smoked weed, taken ecstacy and MDMA, mushrooms and cocaine.

I had a blast with all of them.

But only one of those drugs has gotten me arrested 5 times.
Only one has gotten me into fistfights or beaten up and put in hospital.
Only one has lost me friends, pissed off my family or damaged a relationship I was in.
Only one of those drugs has been the reason for some of the most miserable experiences I've had so far in my life.

    Guess which one?

    Here's a hint: It's legal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,631 ✭✭✭✭Hank Scorpio

Agree with the above post 100%

Ironic though as im still a heavy enough drinker but gave up drugs years ago.

Never once did I get in trouble taking E/weed/coke, but when you go and mix them with alcohol, well thats another story.

Of course there's an element of personal responsibility there too. I was young, angry and stupid.

But alcohol was the only one that brought that anger and foolishness to the surface.

I wouldn't have found myself in the vast majority of those bad experiences had I been sober. I'm a fairly passive, easy going person.

The irony of these posts is that it's actually you guys' attitudes that contribute to gang wars and suffering.

Legalize drugs and the gang violence and state violence against people who mean no harm to anyone will reduce.
