Basic painting question

Do people always base coat in the usual black or white? Are there particular reasons for doing this over choosing another colour? Specifically I'm thinking that if I were trying to paint a wood elf army, for example, I'd probably spray the block troops green as that'll be their predominant colour anyway. Any reason why not to do this?

Black has the advantage of helping with shading later. Semi-dry brushing will put the main color on the raised bits but leave the recesses dark.
