How hard is the National Mens RR? Or would I be better off doing something else that day? Avg speed compared to A3/A2 races?

I'd imagine it will be hard. The toughest aspect being the distance. AFAIK 175k at A1 race pace. Tough.

That's what I was thinkin. The distance is scary compared to what we've been doing at A3. Mite just do hill climb champs instead.

a chance to ride with the pros just before the tour etc.

There is nothing else on that day racing wise.

(Here I go again shaungil! ) 92 ras I rode with Belli and guerini who won the alpe d'huez stage in the tour and its great to see them up close. In fact me and belli punctured around Adare and both got back on quite easily!

I would do it if I were you!

Tell you what, i'll pull you up the drags & you pull me down the other side & we'll see if we can hang on. If it comes to a sprint at the end, you're leading it out, mkay?

I did the nationals in 2009 when I was coming back from a broken collerbone. I would put it harder than a RAS stage if you are actually trying to do anything in the race. Speed is full gas from the start. I'm guessing 45kmph on the rolling route in Monaghan. If you have not been doing the A1/A2 long hard races regularly, I would probably give it a miss.

How hard is the nat champs?? Seriously???

Super super hard... Seen who's wearing the jersey for last 12months??? & the 12 before that.... ??

I reckon they ride bikes pretty fast(up, down, right, left ... Fast)!!!!!

I'd ride it and win it if I wasn't so sh1t on a bike!! ;-)

With just a few days left to enter, there hasn't been a massive entry so far, but then again it's Ireland!

Matt Brammeier is the only Protour entrant so far. Although it's great to see the Irish champs jersey in the Tour de France, Brammeier showed that winning it does no harm to gaining a contract with a Pro Tour team, so would it better for the likes of Sam Bennett to win than Roche? I don't think it would do Deignan any harm either in trying to get a contract for next year, if he was to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,991 ✭✭✭el tel

If he is in it, I think David McCann will take the title back.

He could well have done so last year too if Dan Martin wasn't so reluctant to help him chase down Roche (and Brammier).

ok you cant really expect to win but in my experience you just hang on until you cant anymore and there is no pain. its not as if roche and the lads follow you back to the car and give you a few digs!!! you can only do as much as you can do!

get in there and get up the road ffs!!

How does the National Champs work tactics wise? Is everybody just riding for themselves or will certain alliances form on the road? Take Roche for example, obviously he's not going to have any team mates on the road (& even then he couldn't guarantee that they'd give him a wheel;)), but does he have any one to protect him from the wind, fetch bottles, reel in a breakaway, etc. Same goes for all the Pro Tour Riders like Deignian, Brammier & Martin.

I was reading about the US Champs a few weeks back & it seemed that the likes of Hincapie had other BMC riders work for him early on in the race & try and set a high pace.

Is our National Champs just like a fancy club league race where everybody does their own thing!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭cipo

Race within a race. Much like the shay Elliott....

Goes up the road early and they race it from there. They ll have team / support cars up there with them once they get over a minute gap and so less complication if punctures/ feeds are needed!

In that front group will normally be the best in the race, they know not to miss that move!!! It's easier for them to make it a harder race if you know what I mean.

I'd like to see Martyn Irvine take it. I hope he is racing it now.

its a tought tough race alright , did it in 2009 to , 42.9 avg , helped by the fact there was no hill , throw a proper hill in and its all over for 90% of the field , hope to see one the protour riders take it , great to see the jersey in the big events , hard to see past roche ,

One of the top cycling events in Ireland is being held for the first time in North Monaghan this weekend (June 23rd-26th).
Around 120 riders are expected to take part on Sunday's national senior road race championships.
Matt Brammeier, Nicholas Roche, Daniel Martin and Philip Deignan all due to attend.

I was the only photographer on the back of a motorbike for the Elite race, last year in Sligo. I can honestly say it's a brutal race until the selection is made. I was able to witness Nicholas Roche go across to the race winning break at 40mph+... I even have the photo to prove it....;)

is there any info on the route for the mens race on the sunday?

im gonna drive up on sunday morning and just want to figure out some vantage points.

there's not an awful lot of information on cycling ireland about the race, its all very "cloak and dagger"

I was just looking at the venue, thinking of a trip to spectate, and I noticed Google's special treatment of the satellite imagery of Scotstown and other areas, never noticed this before.

I suppose there's nothing else of interest outside the towns when seen from above

chris if you look on the CI site there is a map for the circuit. there is a hill near the hotel I believe and you can criss cross the circuit to see the race multiple times.

Rolling road closure. Better than we normally get!

    Thats crazy!!

Could they not close the road for a few hours considering it is probably the biggest race in Ireland.

I wouldn't say that it is crazy.

An impossible task to close the roads . That area has a maze of small farm lanes going in every direction . The manpower and resources needed to ensure a closed road for 25kms would be beyond many clunbs in Ireland.

Wont be too much traffic to content with anyway as it a very rural area and a hard course that will thin out the bunch . Constant gradients and a fast pace will make for a great days racing .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,174 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

That's bull...be very east to close of 25km for such a short time!!!
