I think it was Oldgoat who posted a link on one of the threads about this, and i thought -ohh, that's quite nice.

Then, there was an article in one of the camera magazines recently which caught my eye while browsing with what I thought was some *beautiful* imagery - it was a photographer who specialised in Intentional Camera Movement. Can't remember the name (damn you my bad memory). I thought the style was reminiscent of painted pieces of art (watercolour perhaps, monet also came to mind) and I was quite taken by what I saw.

Browsing a contact's flickr tonight I saw reference to it.

It is what it says on the tin. Examples of what Intentional Camera Movement can be found on flickr. Some good some bad here plus its a live flickr search so you never know what it will show up.

Just wondering if there is an interest on the forum in this or indeed do we have any practitioners in our midst. Remember *intentional* appears to be the name of the game rather than the happy accident.

Do people see it as bad photography or an extension of the art* ?

    like or no like

    thoughts?

*helmet on, I think I just mentioned the A word in there, well at least I didn't also say great in the same sentence :)

I did this before - nobody but me liked it though! I think it's cool, sort of like an impressionist painting!

Would panning following a car be regarded as intentional movement? Kind of should be imo

Nah, panning is a skill. Intentionally giving your camera a nudge during a long exposure is....well... :pac:

I'm inclined a little more toward the ... abstract ...

    4134527660_1d36ec4032_z.jpg

I do find it kind of presumptious when someone sticks a label onto something like this though, particularly a label With Capital Letters as though that gives it more gravitas or something. It reminds me of that lomography society thing of parrotting everything as a 'technique', as in the 'Double Exposure technique' and the 'Cross Processing technique'and the 'Light Leak technique' etc etc. It smacks of taking something that people have been doing quite happily for ages and attempting to own it somehow.

Done properly, the results of deliberate shake can be a joy to behold.

This is one of my Flickr contacts a fantastic photographer called Chris Friel:

In my opinion it is definitely not bad photography when done to this standard.

hey guys.. seen this and thought id share. i was in prague recently and went to an exhibition by a photographer called jiri turek, he has a very distinct style which involves a lot of movement in some his images, to some this looks like bad photography but i think the images are amazing. they show a great feeling of life and movement to the cities he is shooting in and is refreshing to see rather than the usual city shots (like i shoot at the moment :( ) anyway enjoy.!! the site doesnt show all of the images he has on display but im sure they could be found..

here is a link to the leica gallery that is exhibiting his work at the moment.

Hmmm, i see where your coming from - but in the right context surely it is as much a "skill" as panning, or any other technique used in order to create the effect you want?

They actually look as though they were initially good photographs before he proceeds to over process the crap out of them.

They're called 'shadows'. They're meant to be there.

The link that made me sit up a and look at this form of photography was Eva Polak. Camera shake is just one aspect of her work. What apealed to me most was that her work is (mostly) straight from the camera and without mucking about in Photoshop.
I found trying to replicate her work an interesting experience and something that I will return to again and again. It's just a smear of vaselene on the lens and a tap of the tripod during long exposure but she produces lovely images.

I know that it's not everyones cup of tea but then again what aspect of photography is?

Dazftw's photo post in the recent skateboarding C+C thread is classic. Flash combined with movement.

I have one! I took this last year in a field of dandelions. I used a slow-ish shutter speed and spun around a bit as I fired off a few shots.

Actually this would be sort of cooler (and capitalisable) if it were an actual popular movement of some sort, which is actually initially what I thought when I read the thread title.

Down with UN-Intentional cameras ! Intentional Cameras ! In all institutions and workplaces, let's popularise Intentional Cameras !! Let's take revenge a thousand times on the UN-Intentional Cameras !!!

I hear Canon are developing an 'Intentional camera'. Only available to "pro togs" though........

you should photoshop a bulge in just right at the bottom middle.

I also made a brief attempt at creating photos like these. Here's one of my favourites from it. I plan on trying more along the lines this summer.
Also, I really like those pictures by Chris Friel. Beautiful colours

Someone made reference to ICM photos being over processed. It is quite often the case that ICM has little post pro work apart from saturation and level work. What is often a characteristic is the huge amount of images taken on a shoot to obtain something that works and often nothing does. But effectively you shoot enough and hopefully have pretty much the end result sooc that requires minimal work

Chris (Friel) actually carries out minimal post processing and in fact only started shooting in RAW earlier this year in order to control colour better. He used to pre-set the camera shooting jpeg so that it de-saturated the image as it was taken and used to shoot predominately b+w (partly due to being colour blind)

Is ICM (the tag originates from the need, in the internet era, to search) creative or skillful or just a photographic cop out? well I would say do two things 1) look at Chris Friels work + ICM groups on Flickr and 2) try it and understand how hard it is to create 'images' like he does.

    Then decide ;)

These are a couple I tried last year. My dslr "drowned" so all I had was a small compact with woefull low light capabilities. Kept getting blurred shots (un-intentional) so I decided to go with the "flow" and see what I could do...:D
