Would it not be best for Ireland for him to go there?

Has really developed into an excellent player.

He could do a job anywhere.

Everton, Newcastle, Sunderland would be good moves for him.

Possibly Villa with the money they are going to get for Young.

Liverpool would actually be a good fit....he scored more championship goals than carroll and looks an all round better player.

The only problem is that they have so much invested in carroll that they will be unwilling to ditch him.

So you think a £5m striker (Long) is going to get more games than a £35m one(Carroll)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,595 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

I'd take him at Liverpool, he looks a very useful player for a very cheap price. He'd do a job for a lot of sides in the Premiership. Everton, Spurs and Newcastle could all do with him.

Its his level. People are demented if they think he will end up at a top half EPL club. And I rate him

Would he really be that much of an improvement on N'Gog?

Where did I say that? Carroll isn't a 35 million pound striker anyway. Pay and worth are two different things.

You belittling someone over football knowledge is hilarious.

Massively, I would say. When N'Gog is on the ball, he never really looks like scoring. N'Gog is far too hesitant on the ball. Shane Long has the strength, pace, confidence and single-mindedness that N'Gog should have, but doesn't.

Maybe not a top-half club, but he'd still be better served at a club fighting for survival because at least he'd be playing against decent opposition.

Liverpool spent 35m on him, he was worth 35m. Simples really.

He obviously wasn't, Newcastle had ye bent over because it was the last day of the transfer window and you needed to spend the money because of the new FFP rules.

N'Gog is going no matter what, the only question is does one spend 7/8 million on a CL player or the same on someone who is proven useful in a top continental league for similar money.

This is irrelevant to the thread but for what its worth Carroll was over priced for his move to pool most people who have a clue about football would accept that fact.

Hope he goes to a mid to lower tabled premier league team at least there he would get his game week in week out. It would be a bit of a joke if he went to liverpool. Who thinks he would get starting ahead of Suarez and Carrol???

If I had to put money on it I'd say he'll be at Reading next season, but perhaps a club like bottom half Premier League club like Wolves or Wigan will take a chance on him.

He's a decent player but it's another example of Irish fans overrating someone just because they're Irish. There's absolutely no chance he'll be going to a club like Liverpool.

i think he would be worth the risk at the right price ..4-5 million

Carroll hasn't exactly proven his worth has he?

Carroll is a cracking player and with a full pre-season behind him he'll be flying for Liverpool next season IMO.

People can say what they like about the price but he'll be part of England's first choice striker partnership for the next 10 + years and will go on to do very well for Liverpool.

He's not worth £35m (but circumstances meant Liverpool needed to pay it) but he's a far better player than Long IMO.

He is too good for Celtic, deserves a chance in the EPL.

Liverpool did a great bit of business and then decided to copy Chelsea.

Maybe he wants to be in the big pool playing with the big boys ?

I am not allowed discuss …

The likes of Wolves, Stoke or Bolton (Elmander gone today) would be good for him. Mick loves the irish at wolves so that would be the fav id say. Depends how much Reading want for him!!

Wolves or Celtic I'd say, either would be a good fit for him.

But he isn't good enough to play with the big boys. None of our players currently are, hence they aren't.

He is the third choice Irish striker behind a player who was on loan at the EPL's worst side and a guy who had a so so season at a struggling club.

If you think Long is good enough to be a top EPL player, can I ask you are Ireland good at football on your planet?

When the chips are down, I strongly suspect Celtic's offer will be the best one.

If you really truely believe that statement then I can honestly say I fear for your sanity. Its a ridicilous statement to make.

As for Long I do think hell probably end up staying in the championship but if he does move itll be to a team of wolves newcastles stature wont be a top six club. I hope he does move to the prem though as itd be good for Ireland, and unlike some I like to see the Irish team do well.

    Hear, hear.

Every single time Ireland has a young player who does well for a bit, we go into silly season. Remember a few years ago the talk of Kevin Doyle going to Chelsea? I love Kevin Doyle and think he's a great player for us, but like Shane Long, it's daft to even suggest that either player is at the level to play for a top-level club on the basis of being joint second top scorer in the Championship.

I can see Long getting a Premier League move, but it will be to a side like Wolves or Wigan as the above poster has stated. If he can get 15 or so Premier League goals next season, then we can talk about a move to a top six club.

If I spent 35 Million on a Freddo bar, is that Freddo bar is worth 35 Million?

Or if I bought Messi for a Choc Ice, you're saying Messi is exactly worth the same as a Choc Ice.

    Good call. Warped logic there.

Everton would be ideal, need a striker to take the chances they make. Would play regularly and would be working with a good squad and a solid manager. They must be on the hunt for a good striker at the right price. Long would be both !
