    Reckon its true.
The church has got some negitive press over the last decade or so. With abuse and all that. This is a knock on effect really.

Those stats are scewed - most only turn up for a Holy Communion (i.e. a day out) and are not seen again until the young lad makes his/her confirmation.

1 in 5 seems a bit high imo.

I honestly don't know anyone of my own generation who attends mass.

Also know fcuk all who have even a fleeting interest in religion.

Edit: Thread needs "Do you attend mass?" poll.

Bear in mind its one 1-in-5 catholics, not 1-in-5 people!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,789 ✭✭✭grizzly

    So what can we do to reverse this? Here is an idea to get the ball rolling;

Alter girls – 18 year olds + hot pants.

Personally, while I reckon its that low of a figure. I really hate these "1 in x" quotes. Its all crap.

Its like if I ask 30 people a question and 10 reply with the same answer - oh "1 in 3" - totally not taking in other aspects ... while I dont mean to sound bad. The best one I ever heard was "1 in 4" people get abused. Now, while abuse happens and its terrible is that really 1 in 4?
In my estate where I grew up there are 21 houses. With alot those parents having 3 kids. So thats the average. Thats 63 people including parents. So roughly 16 people on my estate got abused?

    Sure is.
Does anyone think it will survive in the country and make a come back?

One of the things that really put me off was the seating, they really need to look at that imo, also leg room is pretty bad :(

It wouldn't make a difference to me, but it might help matters for some people if the following was implemented.

The cult of the Roman Emperor and his man made infallibility was removed.
The cancer of pedophilia was genuinely addressed and destroyed.
    Priests could marry.
The church was open and accountable for it's crimes.
The Vatican bank was transparently investigated.
The vast riches and treasures of the church were utilised for the less privileged members of the flock/society.

I'm sure there are many, many other changes required, but the above would be a good start.

    Very good points man.
One thing that will always annoy me about the church and thats they have billions in the bank but always looking for that bit more from you
like say if a church needs a new roof. The church wont be paying for it, the regulars have to "dig deep"

Oh they are one very, very rich organisation alright. Look at the multi-million pound compensation packages offered by some individual religious orders alone. It's mind boggling when you consider the money they have. Disgusting to think a 'begging bowl' is handed around to the regulars every week and the gullible fools continue to pay up.

not surprised. i read an article a while ago that ireland was one of few country's where religion is suppose to become "extinct" as they called it within the near future

I doubt the Archbishop of Dublin would be quoting 'atheist propaganda'.

It would be interesting to see the figures for people under 35. I would guess 5%.

going to mass has nothing to do with god , you time could be spent better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

^ Agree with this. House of god? He's got loads of gafs, stop making me pay for all of em!

Aside from the child abuse and general messages of the church that I really disagree with (opinions on homosexuality / abortion / contraception to name but a few) the fact that my parish priest drives a really expensive Audi and then hands around that lil wicker bowl to the broke and needy just showing up for a bit of hope every week pisses me right off.

Also, something weird about kneeling in front of a dead guy on a cross and chanting in unison that freaks me out. Look at it from an outside perspective who has no experience of christianity and you'd think we were all brainwashed members of a cult. No wonder as little as 1 in 5 catholics go to mass.

Fewer than 1 in 5 attend mass in Dublin shock!!

That's because the rest of us go to our local mass. Are us country folk really expected to attend mass in Dublin? Would yey get down of yer centre of the universe thing. The only time I'm going to Dublin is to go to the zoo and maybe to look at the spike thing or see some vikings.

And maybe the odd visit to Nimhneach when I'm itching for some leather on rubber fun.

They ARE closing down Churches. Some due to lack of parishners, some they have to sell off to pay for clerical abuse cases.

Are nigerians catholics? They go to church every sunday

What would make someone travel to Dublin for mass?

For those who don't get it - holystungun did - the headline has the phrase "in Dublin" in the wrong place!

People from anywhere can "attend mass in Dublin"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,884 ✭✭✭Eve_Dublin

Yet another reason to feel proud to be a Dub. Dubliners voted in only one FF TD and Dubliners have left an archaic institution that is the shame of our country behind. We question the status quo and try to progress while the rest of the country with their massive chips on their shoulders obssess about how much they supposedly hate Dublin (and then move there to work instead of emigrating), we're moving on. Later suckerssss....

    Eve_DUBLIN (woo hoo).

I wouldn't be that surprised if it started to climb again. Maybe not the mainstream christian churches but the more niche ones and other faiths. I would say there are far more people out there who define themselves as "spiritual" than we may see overtly proclaiming allegiance to one faith or other. It seems there is a baseline of folks out there that take comfort from that and fair enough so long as it doesn't affect me or policy decisions.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I’m genuinely shocked that attendance is as high as one in five. I don’t know one single Dub that does attend mass and I know quite a few ‘Catholics’.

Half Muslim, half Christian and half of the Christian are Catholic and the other half Protestant.

You can consider yourself whatever you like but if you don't go to mass, you're not Catholic whether you like it or not.

I neither agree or disagree with you as I’ve no interest in religion, I’m just adding that I know quite a few people that consider themselves Catholic but I’ve never known them to go to mass, hence my surprise that numbers are as high as 1 in 5 Dub's.

They wont have to sell off many seeing as the tax payer is footing the majority of the bill.

    Practising Catholic= goes to mass

Non-Practising Catholic= doesn't go to mass unless said mass is followed by a session (christenings, weddings, funerals etc.)
