Feel a bit bad posting my experience here but this is it anyway.

I had it done privately in <modsnip> about six years ago and cost €600 so you guys are getting good value.

I knew we had hit a snag on the op when I could feel him shaking while he was pulling at something and asked was there a problem and he said he was having trouble finding the vas on my right hand side. Its a tribute to his local anaesthetic that I did not have to much pain in proportion to his struggles but we got throughit and went back to a local house for a few hours and drove back to Tipp then and had a few pints in the local,no probs.

About a year later started getting flashing pains in my side, some that would double you over.Went to GP and he gave me anti-biotics and pain killers and pain went away but has returned every couple of months since.
Have done batteries of tests in hospital incl an endoscopy(up through the eye under general anaestheic), which revealed nothing until the doctors have finally admitted that it is related to my vasectomy which I had been saying all along.
Have had pain now for the past week and and I seem to be able to dull it with Anadin extra but when the flashing pain is not there I can still have that dull pain in my right testicle and I am waiting for an appointment with a specialist to see where we go from here and the Urologist that I was seeing has said that there may be some type of freezing treatment.

Reading up on this on the net(which I know doctors love;))it seems to be quite a common problem that there is no statistics kept on.
But I suppose it could be said that my op was successful at what was set out to be done.

The plan after baby no. 2 (in a yr or 2) is for me to get the shnip!!!

    Some silly Qs

Most important - what is the likelyhood of it affecting my excellent performance?
I know about the mental side of it but i cant see myself creating my own problem. Im worried about irreversible physical issues.

Has anyone had any issues that they are willing to tell?

I dont know if i could live the rest of my life with problems down below

Just read the whole thread and nothing on my main question

Either no one has had any issue with performance or no one wants to talk

has had no impact on me since ive had it done, other than the 7 minutes it took, things are the very same

I had it done at the end of October, so I'm 2/3 of the way through the 18 weeks before testing.

I'm hoping for a fully negative result first time out, so I don't have to submit a second sample.

Looking into doing this very soon. Seems like good reviews from Blanch / Clane area. Will look into them further.

  • Registered Users Posts: 106 ✭✭papamike

Had mine done in Clane last Thursday. We have three kids and needed to do something more permanent on that front.

Got an appointment within a couple of weeks of contacting and all very professional - read some people had counselling before hand but I'd my jocks around my ankles when he asked how many kids did I have!!

The procedure itself was not too bad, not the most pleasant of experiences, more anxious anticipating what was going to happen really although I did lift my knee as the first injection went in - reflex reaction I suppose but he did say not to do it again bearing in mind where he was working:)

Could feel a bit of a pinch on one side - maybe the local anaesthetic didn't work as well there but no pain at all the other side - just some pulling and tugging. All done in less than 10 minutes.

Post Op: I drove myself home and took up residence on the couch for the rest of the day. Few neurofen to kill the pain which does hit later on.

No real problems walking about but still have some discomfort down there which hopefully will ease off over next few days. Wearing tight brief type jocks helps a lot - get a size too small, don't want them swinging about the place. Take photos cos you'll never look as big again;)

One thing I haven't read much about here was the bruising after - not to be too graphic but black avocado would be a very apt description. Any one else have that?

Need to use some form of contraceptive until sperm test at 20 weeks. You can tell the wife that you need about 60 goes to really flush out the pipes;)

    Didn't even look!!

@ papamike, presure you had the micro one? Another place reckons that the older method has better results later on (i.e less long term pain etc).

  • Registered Users Posts: 106 ✭✭papamike

@NobodyImportant not sure what you mean by micro but I had two very small incisions that didn't require a stitch. I had read up about the 'no scalpel' technique in other places which I presume you mean is the newer method but this guy uses the incision method. Location was just handier for me.

I had bruising as well, but the pain on the day was easily handled for me by a couple of Panadol. The bruising was a bit mad, but it fades quickly enough. The discomfort was mild for a couple of weeks afterwards, although slicing my finger open about 4 days after the procedure did distract me for a while!!!

Make sure as well to milk for all its worth the lying on the couch bit after the procedure.:D:D:D I found it was more uncomfortable that painfull and a few Nurafen took away the edge.

Most hospitals will not carry out a vasectomy while your partner is pregnant, usually insisting you wait 6 months after

Anyone use vasectomyireland.ie? listed as Molesworth clinic but that's a dental clinic? Anyone?

Lads how bad is the pain really?

Im getting done on Friday and the oul nerves are starting to kick in.

For camparisons how bad would it be compared to getting say tattooed / pierced as these are probably the best references I have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,582 ✭✭✭Glebee

Not as bad as going to the dentist in my opinion.
    Not painful just uncomfortable.
Stock up on Nurafen or Solpadine and youll be grand:)
Take it easy for the weekend, put your feet up and milk it for
    all its worth .....

If you ever got a hard kick in the Family jewels the pain is similar to the dull ache you have about 45 minutes after that!!

    All done.

Pain wise--felt absolutely nothing bar one injection of local anaesthetic. That was a little bit sore.

Compared to a few hours tattoo sitting this is a doddle.

Loaded on neurofen plus at the minute (best excuse ever when they ask why you want some instead of the 20 usual questions you get)

All in all anyone with any worries--just go for it.An easy 20 minutes.

Well done. Worst part over as far as I'm concerned. Now feet up for the rest of the weekend at least. Try and milk Monday as well if you can.

    Hi guys,

Im planning to do one in the near future.

Looking for a decent clinic in Dublin area. Now, I've found these and prepared a little summary.

vasectomyireland dot ie -€450, this includes the semen samples. If you have a valid medical card, then the cost is €350. they do open-ended vas which is good, because I'm afraid of the 'congestion' side-eff. Want to avoid that at all cost and open ended vas has lower side-eff. percentage.

ifpa dot ie Sexual-Health-Services Vasectomy-Clinic Looks pro. Maybe too pro hehe
    Initial vasectomy consultation €100
    Vasectomy procedure €350
Two semen tests €40 (payable to the Rotunda Hospital)
Free aftercare and follow-up care (if necessary)
    so this is 500 Euro.

vasectomy-ireland dot com €395 low cost but the website looks freaky hehe... anyone been there?

vasectomyplus dot ie site looks okay. €400.00 + €20 per semen sample [usually x2] and you will pay the hospital directly.
The cost includes all your after care visits if needed and emergency cover if you have a problem after the surgery.

vasectomy dot ie open-ended. €500. Morehampton This is a total fee, which covers the operation and all post operative management, including all semen analysis. It also covers any additional semen analysis or follow-up. You can choose between no needle/with needle op which is a good sign.

basically you need to set up budget for 500E and u'll be fine.

I'd went an extensive read and from one point there is no connection between lower testosterone/libido after the op, and also higher prostate cancer might be true but this is v low percentage- still u can die more commonly for a stomach cancer...

other side is quite a lot of men reporting chronic pain post op, I understand that this must be higher than stated '1-5%' because if you are ok then its more likely that you would not post about it but when something goes wrong then of course you will rant about it.

And the number of people reporting issues is pretty high - even here I've saw some... so this might mean side effects are quite common and vas is a nice business with nice cash flow [500 euro for a minor op is a nice one] OR a LOT of men are doing this...

    .

If you have a valid medical card its completely free in the morehampton clinic.
Couldn't recommend Dr O Keefe enough.

Thats cool, I will consider this one - thanks for the info dude!

  • Registered Users Posts: 69 ✭✭adonai

from what I've read it seems that:

the risk of getting instant side effects with open ended vas is pretty low, usually it hits 4-10 years afer the op.

*however* if you are sensitive, and got a lot of semen or cases of testicular pain in the past you should seriously reconsider it.

Now, what is 'a lot of semen' FFS..... how does one interpret that lol is that anything to do re age or vigorous sex life etc? Anyone got any info on this pls?
