Weight lifting for women

    Hi
I am reasonably fit from walking and running but after having my baby a year and a half ago I've noticed everything has started to head south!!
I need to tone up badly especially my arms and tummy area.
I was hoping to get a routine going at home as I'm not really in to gyms and would have to find childminders etc so doing it at home when baby is napping is my best option.
Can anyone recommend a good weight lifting plan with excercises I can do to tone up or maybe recommend a good dvd?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jo

There are far better qualified people here than me who I'm sure will be along shortly, but in the meantime, there are a couple of threads in the Index of Useful/ Interesting Threads Sticky that might be of use:

    Home Workout Thread

    Hi Jo :)

If you're training at home is there any chance of you picking up a kettlebell? They're not mad expensive, and you'd have far more options training wise as opposed to just doing bodyweight workouts. There are tons of tutorials on youtube also that you could work from too.

How often do you run? Is it all long distance runs? i.e. slow and steady? You could try mixing it up a bit and including intervals, e.g. short sprints where you go all out, followed by a short rest period and repeat..

With regards to the gym, a lot of them actually have free creches now, so that'd be worth checking out too.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful!
Re kettleball, I had never heard of it before but def sounds like something that would work for me.
Re walking/running, I do 30 mins every morning on my treadmill, walking for 5 mins the running for 5 etc and then in the evenings I walk the dog.

If you do a google for Jay Blahnik 10k training there is a great treadmill podcast workout that he does, combines hills, sprints etc.
Also some more treadmill interval training here

If you have dumbells at home I found the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred a great dvd to do - hard but good results & only 20ish minutes long. It combines weights, cardio, and ab work in circuits.

Prefer myomytv.com myself. More focus on the workouts and less on the instructors boobs and bum :)

The mixture of body weight exercises and kettlebell routines are ideal IMO for dropping body fat and getting a strong, lean body

Thanks for that, didn't know it existed *adds to favs*
Bodyrock is handy though if you have no equipment, mostly BW stuff, and whats wrong with a bit of cleavage :P

    You're welcome re myomytv :)

Nothing wrong with a bit of cleavage, I think Zuzana is beautiful and has a fab figure. However a lot of her videos are more like soft porn IMO, which may turn some folks off.

Marianne is also beautiful IMO, She is a staff nurse in a cardiac unit as well as a qualified PT, so juggles her workouts around her shifts. Something I think a lot of folks can identify with. I think she is also in amazing shape, fabulous figure and her soft Belfast accent just makes me melt :o:o:D

Her site also includes body weight only workouts, KB only workouts or mixed workouts along with tutorials and some tasty recipes and other stuff
