In my opinion the pinnacle of Disney animation. The Lion King is returning to the cinema in September for 2 weeks just before its release on Blu-Ray (Which is also cool). Unfortunately it's in 3D but hopefully it'll be released in 2D also. Now, those dates are in the US but Toy Story 1&2 were re-released here also just before Blu-Ray release.

Set for a Sept. 16, 2011 release, it is the latest classic library title to get the 3D treatment.

Disney is bringing The Lion King back to theaters on Sept. 16, 2011, this time in digital 3D.

The Lion King is the latest classic library title to get the 3D treatment.

James Cameron’s Titanic is being remastered, and will be released in 3D on April 6, 2012 by Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment.

Released in 1994, The Lion King was a defining moment for Disney, ushering in an animation renaissance. It continues to be the highest-grossing hand drawn animation film of all time, earning $783.8 million at the worldwide box office.

Disney also announced a title change, with John Carter of Mars being shortened to John Carter. That film opens in theaters on March 9, 2012.

I'd love to see the original 2D version but I'd try the 3D one and see what it's like.

3D? Damn you Disney. The Lion King is the film that made me want to be an animator, I lost track of the number of times I went to see it in the cinema as a kid. Went to ever weekend matinee for several weeks but no way am I sitting through it with added 3D.

Not sure about £D*, but I'll definately watch it in two dimensions.

*yes, that's what I'm calling it now. The D stands for Dollars

October 7th, not too long now.

I'll happily go see this even in 3D. And done right it may actually be stunning. Even more stunning I should say.

I was 10 years old when this was first released, one of my first cinema outings. And what a way to start.

If it wasn't in 3D I'd be more interested.

    From Disney:

I’m sure many of you are now aware of the phenomenal opening of our much treasured property THE LION KING in the US this past weekend .
It has grossed a whopping $29.3m in 3 days from 2330 sites for a per screen average of $12,575 !

Just to put that opening into perspective :

It is the first re-issue to open at Number One in 14 years , since RETURN OF THE JEDI – SPECIAL EDITION.

It is the biggest opening Gross for a re-issue since STAR WARS –SPECIAL EDITION , again some 14 years ago.

It is the 2nd Biggest September opening in Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures history and the 5th Biggest September opening in industry history.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-report-lion-king-236663

As you can see, the magic of LION KING lives on even after 17 years so it all looks good for our Irish opening on October 7th.

I know they attempted to do Beauty & the Beast (I've seen a ten minute sample & it's gorgeous), but it never got a release for some unknown reason, so I'd expect them to return to this next year & get it out with maybe a 3D makeover of The Little Mermaid for the following year. They're the three films they're most proud of in the last couple of decades & they're also the ones that have musical versions playing on broadway & touring.

I don't get the hate for 3D here. It one film that would translate quite well to 3D given the fact that it was hand drawn and consists of lots of solid colours.

It's in 2D as well if you insist on not seeing 3D

Because 3D has added nothing to any movie I've seen in 3D, the glasses make the screen darker, are annoying to wear, and the cinema charges you more for (what I consider) a viewing experience that's no better, and sometimes lesser, than 2D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

The Lion King was never intended to be 3d, so the only reason to make it 3d now is to get extra money, it's pointless.

I also hate 3d glasses, I have to put them on over my own glasses and they never stay in place.

I hope it's shown in 2d in my local, I'd love to take my Nephew to it

If you rather go see the 2D one then go see it.
This thread has given lots of example why its worth being released. I'd love to bring my Neice and Nephew to this, 3D or not.

I hope the 3D isn't over the top, but I can certainly think of some scenes that would look good. The stampede, elephants graveyard, pride rock fires etc

I never said it wasn't worth being released, just that 3D does nothing for me personally (especially 3D that's added retrospectively). I'm the biggest Disney fan there is, I think it's great that they're re-releasing it.

I agree with the comment about retrospective 3D regarding normal movies. In that case its terrible.

But this was a hand drawn cartoon. Even if it was originally 3D it would of ahnd to have been retrospectively. I'm hoping that they apply 3D to scenes that have existing foreground/background elements without adding any. In this way, there won't be any 3D objects for the sake of it, but rather everything that was always drawn for the original.

Maybe i'm being optimistic, but they have a chance to do a decent 3D conversion here and not mess it up by going over the top.

The 3D isn't for the purposes of point at the audience. It's for depth of field. In that respect, I think retro added, especially in animation, it's perfectly acceptable.

No, I hate the idea of "3Difying" it (and anything, ANYTHING not shot in 3D originally). Just because the technology is available doesn't mean it should be done. The film was created as a 2D film and should remain so. Remember back in the late 80's when there was a fad of colourising black-and-white films? Truly awful. Thankfully that fad stopped and is looked upon as a huge mistake. I firmly believe that the same will happen with 3Difying movies. If shot in 3D, then no problem but why 3Dify a perfectly good film just because it's the new craze? This is the one chance of an entire new generation of cinema goers to see The Lion King on the big screen. Instead of seeing it in it's bright, vibrant colours with fantastic visuals they will see it in a dimmed, imperfect version that blurs during fast moving scenes. What next? Lucas-ify Snow White with 3D, THX surround sound and redoing the witches transformation scene with state-of-the-art CGI? Will there be 1000 dwarves? Will Greedo shoot fi..... You get the idea :)

Hopefully (probably) it'll also be released in bright and beautiful 2D

Crikey, it topped the US box office last weekend wilth a take of 30 million!

This could mean a slew of 3D conversions/theatrical re-releases for Disney classics now.

Maybe Jurassic Park can emulate the success, wouldn't mind if it means seeing more classics in the cinema :D

What are you talkign about "originally shot" for?
It was a hand drawn movie, it wasn't originally shot as anything. Had they wanted to make it #d they would of still ahve to film it then retrospectively apply it.

How can you comment on how good it is if you havent seen it?
If its terrible I'll agree with you. But most terrible 3D movies are cheap CGI jobs. This is got a proper budget. I jsut really hope it works

OK Mr. Pedantic. It wasn't SHOT, it was Hand Animated. You missed my point. It was Hand Animated in 2D. It was intended to be Hand Animated in 2D. I was Hand Animated to be shown in 2D. It was NOT Hand Animated to be shown in 3D. My point is that it, and any other film should not be altered simply because of a money-grabbing fad. I don't want to see digitally coloured Laurel And Hardy films. They were shot in B&W and should be left that way. I don't want to see Metropolis in dolby digital surround with CGI effects instead of models and in 3D. I want to see the films as the directors created them.

Meh you're still msising my point. I never mentioned other movies.

It'd a great film, if i could be with my family today i'd love to bring my niece to it as her mother brought me in the 90s. I couldn't care less that they are money grabbing.

Because its hand animated I don't have a problem with retro 3D as its prob best suited. The fact that it wasn't intended to be 3D is a plus as now the 3D will be applied to existing foreground/background to give subtle DoF. And not over the top effects.

If you are stubbord and refuse to watch the 3D then you don't have to. It's in re-released in 2D also.

And it's not the last classic Disney film we're going to see in 3D!

"Following the success of The Lion King's re-release in the medium, Disney will put out new versions of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. over the next couple of years."

Gonna have to wait for 2013 for The Little Mermaid though :(

Basically they're adverts for the upcoming Blu-Ray releases like what they did with Toy Story. To be honest, I really don't care if it's a money-grabbing exercise, I still cannot wait to see The Lion King back in the cinema and bring my niece and nephew to see it for the first time in the cinema.

    From Disney:

Disney and Pixar announce four 3-D re-releases

Following the extreme success of the re-release of The Lion King in 3-D, Disney and Pixar have just announced plans to re-release four of their biggest animated hits in that format. First up will be Beauty & the Beast–already converted into a 3-D, only to have its originally planned re-release cancelled by Disney–, which will come back to the big screen on January 13th, 2012. Next up will be Finding Nemo on September 14th, 2012. Following that in 2013 will be the re-release of Monsters, Inc. on January 18th, which will put it back in theaters just a few months before the film’s prequel is the following June. And finally, The Little Mermaid will see its second re-release to theaters on September 13th, 2013. The full press release from Disney can be found below.
On the heels of the phenomenal success of The Lion King 3D – which will cross the $80 million mark at the domestic box office today – The Walt Disney Studios has announced limited theatrical engagements for four of its classic films for the first time in 3D. The following titles from Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios will be released in 2012 and 2013:- Beauty and the Beast – January 13, 2012

    - Disney•Pixar’s Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012

    - Disney•Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013 (Monsters University, a prequel to the original film, arrives in theaters in Disney Digital 3D on June 21, 2013)

    - The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013

“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Alan Bergman, President, The Walt Disney Studios. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D – and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

Originally released in 1991, Beauty and the Beast is a classic “tale as old as time” that follows the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman imprisoned in the castle of a mysterious beast and his enchanted staff, who must learn the most important lesson of all – that true beauty comes from within. Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Picture, earning an additional five Oscar® nominations and winning two. It has grossed $380.4 million worldwide.

First released in 2003, Disney•Pixar’s Finding Nemo takes audiences into a whole new world in this undersea adventure about family, courage and challenges. When Marlin, an overly cautious clownfish living in the Great Barrier Reef, helplessly watches his son get scooped up by a diver, he must put aside his fears of the ocean and leave the safety of his coral enclave to find Nemo. Buoyed by the companionship of Dory, a forgetful but relentlessly optimistic fish, Marlin finds himself the unlikely hero in a seemingly impossible land-and-sea rescue. Finding Nemo won an Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for three others. With a total of $867.6 million worldwide, it was the second highest-grossing film of 2003.

In 2001, Disney•Pixar released Monsters, Inc. Lovable Sulley and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski are the top scare team at Monsters, Inc., the scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. But when a little girl named Boo wanders into their world, it’s up to Sulley and Mike to keep her out of sight and get her back home. Monsters, Inc. shattered every DVD-era home entertainment sales record when 11 million DVD/VHS copies were sold during its first week of release. It won an Academy Award® for Best Song and has grossed $526.9 million worldwide.

Released in 1989, The Little Mermaid, stars Ariel, a fun-loving and mischievous mermaid, off on the adventure of a lifetime with her best friend, the adorable Flounder, and the reggae-singing Caribbean crab Sebastian. But it will take all of her courage and determination to make her dreams come true and save her father’s beloved kingdom from the sneaky sea witch Ursula. One of the most celebrated animated films of all time, The Little Mermaid was nominated for three Academy Awards®, winning two. It has grossed $228.9 million worldwide.

Beauty And The Beast was meant to be released before the Blu-Ray release but wasn't released wide. (AFAIK it just showed at a few festivals and in a few places in Europe)

Monsters Inc, even though it's already out on Blu-Ray, will probably be released shortly before the sequel, Monsters U somes out and, I'm assuming the rest will come out shortly before their Blu-Ray release

but people like seeing old movies in the cinema, win win for everyone.

now if only they'd rerelease Raiders of The Lost Ark for its 30th anniversary (which was earlier this year)

Lucas, y u no rerelease Indy?!

actually keep Lucas as far away from it as possible, he'd probably have the ark open and ewoks pop out.

What's the last decent non-Pixar film they've done? Actually what's the last one they've done that wasn't Direct-To-DVD? Pixar is keeping Disney afloat IMO, because their animation wing has declined drastically over the years.

Tangled was amazing, Bolt was excellent. In the more traditional vein, Return To Neverland & Tarzan were both big box office for them even Princess & The Frog, while not a huge box office success, made money & stands up there with the older ones.
