Cervical cancer vaccine

I see today in the news that the cervical cancer vaccine is to be extended to all sixth year girls (http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/health-minister-reilly-to-extend-cervical-cancer-vaccination-programme-506530.html).

I think this is probably a good thing, and wish they'd done this 4/5 years ago when I was in 6th year. Does anyone know how late is too late to get it done? I read somewhere that it's "less effective" if given after young women become sexually active, is that true? I guess it makes sense if you've already contracted HPV, but why less effective, why not just ineffective?

Basically, I'm looking for some reliable information on the vaccine  However, if anyone here has had it done, or thought about having it done and decided not to I'd definitely like to hear about why.

P.S. I did a quick search for "cervical cancer vaccine" on the ladies lounge before making this thread. The last one seems to have been a year ago, so rather than resurrect a zombie thread I thought I'd make a new one. Mods, is this ok?

There are several strains of HPV, if you have one already then there is no point in being vaccinated against they type which can cause cervical cancer. This is why they say it's best to have it done before a person becomes sexually active as over 80% of the sexually active population has one of the strains.

Some drs will test you if you wish to have the vaccine to see if there is any point in you having it.
