    that if a bit of cork goes into the wine upon corking thats it ruined

    No you could just have corked it wrong. One of the signs of a bad wine though is a damp cork. Then the smell of the cork gets into the wine. Believe me if it happens you will know!

    The wine will be constantly touching the cork when it's stored on its side.

    You can just fish out any bits of cork after pouring with a teaspoon.

    When a wine is 'corked' which I think is what you are referring to, it means that the cork has not sealed it correctly and a fungal infection has gotten into it.

    It has nothing to do with fragments of cork in your wine, and everything to do with nasty stuff drinking your booze before you get to it.
