Thanks Whores

    How do you define them?

I'm curious as it's been mentioned a lot in the last few days.

To me, it's someone who deliberately posts something obvious like a worn-out meme, in order to get thanks deliberately.
Some people of course just post something flippant because it's After Hours.
Then others will post something (they think is, at least) genuinely funny, especially if the original post is asking for a smartarse response.

To me, the first one is the real thanks whore. The other two types I think just see an opportunity to make a funny remark and do so, not necessarily looking for thanks. You wouldn't complain about someone making jokes in real life (unless they weren't funny).

It's interesting as there's been a few threads with OPs looking for serious answers who were advised not to expect such things here.
Yet there's also been some people complaining about thanks whores.
The great thing about AH for me, is that it combines intelligent discussion with smartarsery and general messing, with "thanks whores" inevitably coming under that umbrella.
Yet some people, it seems, want to separate them.

So what, to you, is a thanks whore, and do they belong here?

Pretty much anybody who starts a thread about thanks.

(also anybody in the first 5 posts who insults the OP or belittles the reason for the thread)

AH is a forum with a lot of joking in it and to me, thanks whore is a description used by

    a) people who don't agree with jokes or wisecracking in AH

    b) people who don't like the Thanks system or have a sly gripe about it, for example, they're pissed because they don't get thanked a lot

    c) people who are themselves fishing for thanks by making smart comments about second posts, thanks whores etc etc.

Remove the thanks button, thereby raising the quality of the answers, or at least removing the god-awful memes that get parroted.

Meh, if someone says something funny/good they'll get a thanks, and sure why not, no point having the button and not using it

    Recognition makes ya feels goods.

I'm dreaming of the day that i say something so funny that people crap themselves when they read it, and I get loads of thanks's's's's and maybe, just maybe I get to be that lucky fellow who, for one day, gets to be noted under the revered "post of the day" tab.. :o Then i will be on top of maslows poxy fookin pyramid.

That's the way I see it as well, and if you look at posts that get a lot of thanks, they're mostly funny or smart.
I think some of the people complaining about thanks whores are just annoyed they don't get many thanks.

I post what I want. I'll be as smart arse or as serious as I want in After Hours. I do it because I feel like it, not to get thanks. If people want to thank a post I've made - fair enough.

If people get all annoyed because their topic isn't being taken seriously then they can post it somewhere else. But they'd rather grumble about 'thanks whores' but as the OP has pointed out the posts that generally get the biggest thanks are often quite clever/witty whatever.

A lot of threads get serious discussion in After Hours and lot of threads get the p*ss ripped out of them. That's how it goes.

Blah blah blah..... 'thanks whores' is just a lazy term people like to throw out when their precious thread didn't get taken seriously. Boo-hoo.

    +1
I wonder if they also like to complain about the overuse of "begrudgers!" on AH :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

The very same people I'd imagine. And also, those who whinge about "thanks whores" and the thanks button - I presume they don't thank anyone, e.g. as a snide dig against someone they disagree with, and I presume they PM developers to remove any thanks they receive?

The snide dig thing to gang up on people is the only thing I dislike about the thanks feature (even then though, much of the time what people deem a snide dig isn't at all) otherwise it's a handy feature that eliminates clutter. I'd wager also that most of the time when it's assumed someone is "thanks-whoring" they aren't at all - perceived smart-arse replies were around LONG before the thanks feature was brought in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

Would be interesting to see some graphs on this.

Particularly interesting would be (post #:thanks)/thread posts ratio. If you don't get your 'witty' AH reply in the first few posts for a short thread (or first page for long threads) then your thanks ratio will be exponentially reduced.

Although what would also be cool to see would be the 'unwitty'/FAIL posts. These would be the post where someone thinking they are witty by quickly getting in a reply within the first 5 posts but getting no thanks while everyone around them is getting all thanked up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

I have more thanks than actual posts. I'm a veritable bukkake slut of the thanks whores. I love it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

I'd love to see the end of the thanks button. What annoys me is the 2 or 3 users who hang around fora (AH in particular) like perverts waiting for a new thread so they can be the first witty respondent. Its also funny to note the amount of arse licking the thanks button induces. Look at the posters with high post counts getting tons of thanks for the slightest thing.

I hate it, bring back boards before the thanks whoreism.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

What some people clearly and repeatedly fail to realise is that some of us having been posting here in the same style long before 'thanks' became apart of boards.

It leads to whinging individuals who are obsessed with it throwing childish pithy accusations around as if it is of any remote importance or accuracy.
It is the most acceptable and permissible way to derail a thread in AH, which sucks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭ucdmike

While the Thanks Whores can be somewhat annoying, as others have pointed out already the comments that usually recieve a lot of Thanks are generally quite witty and funny.

What does piss me off though is the Thanks Whoring done by Mods. I'm specifically referring to when threads get locked. It seems to have become a running theme now that when a Mod locks a thread they also have to make some sort of a smart-arsed remark too. Why not just lock a thread and give a reason why the action was taken?

87% of thanks in a thread is given between the first 10 to 15 posts.

98% of the statement above is bullshít.

Those are interesting points. Sometimes once a post gets a few thanks it's guaranteed to get more just because it already has a few thanks, and it snowballs.
And it can be used as a substitute for debate and following up on a post you like.

I also don't like the idea of hanging round waiting for a new thread just to be the first to reply. However it's difficult to separate that from people genuinely posting something as a first reply without thinking about how many thanks it'll get. Lord knows I've posted inane first responses in threads, but largely because I've stumbled upon the thread in its infancy and posted something silly because stupid thoughts zoom around my brain all the time and I need to release them from time to time.

Yet I do like the idea of the thanks button, and I think it's a great simple way to say "fair play" for a post you like but don't necessarily need to reply to.

First of all, this "operation" could be in your head; secondly, if not, it was around long before the thanks button.
Its also funny to note the amount of arse licking the thanks button induces. Look at the posters with high post counts getting tons of thanks for the slightest thing.
That's definitely in your head - do you honestly think people think "Oh look, a person with a high postcount - I'll thank them"?
Yes, those who are more familiar will get more attention paid to them, but it's not like people make a conscious decision to do so - and everyone was a newbie once.
The thing about licking up to mods - I don't know whether people lick up to mods. What would they have to gain from it? Ok, there's the thanking a mod if they reprimand someone the thanker doesn't like, which is arsey, but that's not to lick up to the mod; and the thanking a mod for closing a thread - but the latter is usually just because they don't see the point of the thread being open either.

Way too much sinister intentions are being assumed, when it's mostly people just hitting a button and not thinking too much about it.

The thing with the first reply post in a thread is somebody has to be the first to reply and in many cases the reply to OP''s post is just begging for a witty response and if it make you laugh then it's deserving of a thanks .

i'd have to disagree there. mods do get thanked slightly more than other posters, and there are a few AH regulars that get thanked almost automatically whatever they post.

    Exactly.
People might be unconsciously more inclined to thank someone who already has a lot of thanks. The same way you're more inclined to think a comedian you like is funny. But I don't think people will automatically thank an unfunny post by someone with a high postcount.
While some people might lurk around waiting for a new thread to open, it's hard to prove that, and if their reply is funny then so what?
If it's not funny they won't get thanked, if it's the first reply or not.

I'd probably do it more if I knew how it worked. I've had Thanks piled on to the most unlikely posts for no apparent reason, so I don't bother trying to influence it either way.

Besides: if I get a lot of Thanks, what's the reward? A Mod job? Ouch!

I think people definitely appear to be spending too much time thinking (or moaning) about a feature that essentially clears up a lot of crud posts and spreads a little good karma around.

I think thanks beget thanks because when you scroll down a page idly you tend to spot a post with a cluster of thanks at the end - this is especially true in the Cloud skin - and you see a post you might have otherwise skipped.

As for friends thanking friends: you are generally friendly with people on here because you like or value what they say so they become friendly with you because you like their posts as opposed to liking their posts because they are your friends.

I would thank any post from any user if I liked it. I've often thanked posts by people that I don't get on with, for example.
