This is referred to as the showpiece event on the European Tour and it's up there with the most valuable.

All the top European Tour players are teeing it up for this along with Yang, Els, Goosen, Daly & Rose. Irish players included in the field are McDowell, McIlroy, Clarke, McGinley, Lowry, McGrane, Lawrie & Hoey.

    Tee Times

    Betting

    I'm going for McDowell (22/1) & Willett (80/1) e/w.

My mam and dad are gone over to watch it. they love Wentworth, have been there before. I've been over three times. It's a lovely part of Surrey.
    They are staying with friends.
What is great about Wentworth is that you get 'genuine' golf fans there who know how to behave when watching the golf. Has anyone noticed the rough element now turning up to watch the Irish Open and indeed play at private courses.
I remember we went to Killarney last year to see the golf. Dad arranged for a group of us to fly down by helicopter on the Friday. The place was full of people who didn't know the etiquette of golf. They were standing and then moving as the players adressed their ball; chatting loudly as players stood over putts; applauding players when there was no need and running from one fairway to another.
And the number of people with mobile phones ringing was disgraceful.
I was glad to get out there that same evening.

My helicopter was getting the timing belt done for the NCT that week so I had to drive down with the rest of the proles...

Was there no enforcement of rules by any stewards?

I'd find that very strange at a major European tour event. I've been to numerous tour events in Ireland and have to say that the knowledge, behaviour and support of the fanbase has been second to none with the utmost respect shown to players and the game of golf.

There is no need for sarcasism. Seems people here are offended by my earlier posting regarding flying to Killarney by helicopter to watch a day's golf at the Irish Open.
What's wrong with doing that? It beats sitting in traffic for 6 hours, or waiting for a train or bus when everybody is pushing and shoving and coughing in your direction.

I am referring to the hoards who turned up on the day, didn't understand the rules of golf and the expected behaviour from spectators. I remember one group from the midlands or somewhere and they opening up their lunches. They had a picnic alongside the fairway near to where I was standing and proceeded to dish out the sandwiches and flasks of tea or coffee.
You would think they would have gone to the tented village and bought something to eat there.

Early scoring has Donald and Monty at -5. Clarke -2 and Lowery -1

McDowell (+1) and McIlory (+4) not at the races.

If the European Tour are serious about competing with the PGA Tour, they could start by sorting out their online scorecard, its showing some seriously wacky scores at the moment. Such a let down in comparison to shot tracker etc on the PGA.

Hard to see beyond Donald winning this after the start he's made.

Looked like it was hacked - Donald went from -5 to +41 in one hole. :D

The European tour should also look at the PGA Tour's mobile app, great app.

I'd be happy to lay him as he rarely gets the job finished.

The PGA Tour's online leaderboard, including shottracker, is the most unpredictable piece of software I've ever come across. It is littered with errors on an hourly basis, every single tournament.

What a seriously ridiculous comment you made

So you'd rather have the European Tour leaderboard which is extremely slow in updating, has errors all the time (what about Lowry's 9 a couple weeks ago), and as per this morning seems liable to be hacked.

I never said shot tracker was perfect (its far from it) but in comparison to shot tracker the european tour is way behind. At least you get a good idea how a player is playing via ST, in spite of the errors.

So you are basically saying the European Tour leaderboard sucks because it is too slow and doesn't have shottracker?

Both leaderboards are unpredictable. For me, the PGA Tour much more so.

For what it's worth, there is stats available on the European Tour leaderboard, so you can gage how a golfer is playing.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying.

While shot tracker my be erratic it generally corrects itself fairly quickly. Its a huge undertaking which is never going to be 100% accurate (particularly when Harrington is playing ;)) but its great to be able to follow players and groups through their round and go back over holes to see where shots have been gained/lost. The european tour struggle to keep a basic leaderboard updated promptly and accurately.

The ET website was overhauled about a year ago and it's gone downhill ever since imo. Had a look at Nick Dougherty's score and scorecard just there and they don't match up. Even the career results for players' profiles is a mess. PGA tour site is streets ahead imo.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Also stupid details like this on the ET site:
Click on the Leaderboard, then the Hole By Hole 'tab'.
You can see at a glance what holes tend to be birdied etc... all is good.
Robert Coles had two doubles in his level par round of 71, T13...
Now click on the flag beside his name to "highlight" him.
...lovely very dark grey background appears and the doubles now are black on dark grey.

That's a pretty basic usability fail right there. On the PGA site you can highlight players and choose from a few different (light) colours. Highlighting should make them stand out more but it's poorly implemented on the ET site.

That round from Donald yesterday has put him in a very strong position. The early starters today aren't doing much so conditions must be tough.

A couple of small bets on Quiros @ 25/1 laid it off @ 9/1 and the Dazzler @ 45/1 now 25/1. Hoping for 1 more birdie from Clarke and hopefuly lay it off at 16/1. Playing very steady and great to see such a natural talent back up there.

BBC 1, and BBC 1 HD from 4:50, again why not earlier I don't understand. I like BBC's coverage but Sky would have this showing from the morning, not mid-afternoon.

Donald making a balls of things. Would love to see Manassero or Quiros win this, they're both really exciting players.

great comeback from Donald today. to be joint leader going into sunday at 5 under after being 5 over thru 6 holes is an unbelievable comeback. Massive day for Mannesero now tomorrow to be leading going into a final day of a major competition tied for the lead.

Looking for big days from Westwood, Fisher and Rory tomorrow

i back Donald last week and well you know how this is going, i have laid him at 2.66, i watch him for 1 hole today, he hits a tree and pops back out - so back him heavy
