No VDS is a fail. Even if he is retiring in 3 days:(. He's certainly right up there.

I'd go for David De Gea. Whatever team gets that lad certainly has the right idea. :P:pac:

Seriously though my top five are:

VDS, Reina, Casillas, Valdes and Buffon. Buffon if he could keep fit that it.

Hart for me could well be no.2 for me after casillas, he looks unbeatable.

2 seasons he is playing and already he is the best in Europe. Must be some player.

Might I just ask how much Spanish footie do you watch? I'm 99.99% sure I know who you support anyways.

Its hard to believe Buffon is only 33, it feels like he has been around forever.

Think your joke detector is broke, plus the Cantona avatar and the United sig are sort of a giveaway.

    A. Still the same

Just because he is gona stop playing for a while doesn't mean he isn't one of the best keepers :p

Not Reina or Hart anyway, I wouldn't even have them in the shortlist there. I'd have Paul Robinson over Hart to be honest, he's criminally underrated although Hart has a lot of time to develop! Reina's so overrated it's unreal.

    My top 5 would be:

Van Der Sar, Casillas, Valdes, Stekelenburg and Cech.

FM has shown me his potential. He's being playing football since he was 9. He's clearly amazing. Maybe not the best ever but probably the best in the world right now.

I watch every match of Spanish football, every week, ever.

    My new top 3:

    1. De Gea
    2. Lindegaard
    3. Amos

Trust me I play the game. I know what I'm talking about.

    Bit of a mouthful though.

Julio Cesar has been dreadful this season hasn't he? Unforgivable mistakes v. Bayern in the Champions league. I've heard his league form hasn't been up to scratch either.

Casillas is the best for me and its not even close. After him its close between a few of them, Valdes, Reina, Cech, VdS I suppose are the next 4 in whatever order you like.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 154 ✭✭CharlesHaughey

LOL @ Reina getting 8 votes, 3 ahead of the nearest Casillas. There is a reason Casillas is no 1 for Spain people!

Yeah, he has been really poor all season.

De Sanctis, Handanovic, Storari, Abbiati and Sorrentino have been the best Serie A keepers this season IMO.

One thing that has really struck me is how Spain have a ridiculous array of goalkeepers. Casillas, Valdes, Reina and De Gea, that's incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,046 ✭✭✭eZe^

Valdes is so criminally underrated. This year he won the Zamora trophy for the 4th time(with the 2nd lowest goals per game ratio in the trophies history), Casillas has won it once.

    He's a headbanger, Bill.

The top 5 keepers... well er, I don't watch European football bar the odd CL game and Classico so I cannot comment. I also don't really watch English football, bar the odd United-Liverpool slugathon. I do however watch Arsenal, and I can tell you with 51% certainty that Wojciech Szczesny is the best keeper at Arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭TheEscapist

I'd have Casillas top as he's never really had a cohesive team in front of him and still shined unlike VDS or Valdes for example who both have played with a very settled and sane club :pac:. And with a great team in front of him with Spain he still shows his quality.

My top 5 is Casillas, VDS, Valdes, Reina and Neuer. And I think Cech has started getting back to his best the last season and a half.

    1 Casillas

    5 Cesar

Interesting* thing about Cech he has dropped the highest amount of catches in the league this season

*may not be that interesting but for someone being hailed as being back to their best surely this souldnt be happening

    stats shmats.

    Real Madrid defence consistently poor.

Barcelona rarely let their opponents have the ball never mind let them have decent chances.

I do rate Valdes though, a lot more than I used to.

Cech is by and far the most overrated keeper at the moment, since his injury his look uncertain under high ball and avoids 50/50's...His afraid of a repeat with his head injury which is totally understandable...But i reckon his performances this season(from what i've seen) his getting worse think its time for Chelski to cut his loose

Chelsea player of the season and has been brilliant this season apart from a couple of mistakes.

Not sure I would agree that Cech is overrated anymore - I think people have been critical for a while - if anything he is probably underrated now!

Still an excellent keeper but you can't shake the feeling he ain't as invincible.

Reina is class but I don't think this was his best season (nor was it for any Liverpool player realistically).

Hart is overrated imo - plenty of goals you can blame on him this season.

Really hope Given gets a move away as soon as possible - breaks my heart not to see him in regular action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 757 ✭✭✭Apanachi

OK, apart from Van de Sar (but we all know he's the God of all 'keepers)

    Reina
    Neuer
    Cech

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Hannibal

LOL @ Reina getting 8 votes, 3 ahead of the nearest Casillas. There is a reason Casillas is no 1 for Spain people!
The reason is because he's no 1 for Real Madrid!! No matter how good Reina has been for 6 years or Valdes is for Barcelona they will never unseat the Real Madrid keeper.

A lot of people are mentioning Joe Hart.. if Shay Given was English he'd be no 1 for Man City instead of Hart.

Buffon is possibly the best ever, just been unlucky with injuries the last year or two but he's still the best around.

Think it's more to do with the fact that Casillas has done nothing to warrant being dropped. Which is unfortunate for Valdes as he's top class and would be number 1 for virtually every other country in the world.

He is back to his best this season, making excellent saves and excellent in the air. I think he is now underated because the media have been harsh on him after his skull fracture, its only natural that it would take some time to return to his best after that.

Yeah and we can also point out that he had the most clean sheets this season, winning the golden glove award with one game to go, plus City conceded the least amount of goals along with Chelsea. Now for a couple of mistakes I would gladly take that.

Because this poll is essentially a who do you support poll and has nothing to do with who people believe is the better goalie. Everyone just votes for the goalie of the club they support, did not see that coming

City are a very very defensive team so he's not often exposed.
By that logic Reina won the Golden Glove in 05/06, 06/07, 07/08 and shared it in 09/10 yet everyone said Cech or VDSar were still better. It's the same as the Spanish Zamora, you have to factor that Barca generally have over 70% possession and their keeper is very rarely worked..

If the Golden Glove is your barometre then Reina has been the best keeper in the EPL for 3 of the last 5 seasons without question.

I stand by my claim that he is slightly overrated despite Man City keeping the most clean sheets.

They also play with one striker, a defensive midfield/formation and have a pretty decent back four. I wouldn't take all the credit away from him obviously but I think you have to look at sharing the the success of winning the Golden Gloves with your teammates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 693 ✭✭✭Uncle Mclovin

First of all I watch a lot of Spanish and English football, a good bit of Italian and not much of the rest barring champions league.

It's hard to pick a best keeper. They all have flaws in certain areas. eg Reina is by far and away the best distributor of the ball but he isn't the best with the high ball.

My ratings would be from what I watch.

    Best Distributor: Reina

    Most Commanding: Neuer

    Best Shot Stopper: Lloris

    Best At Penalty Saves: Reina

    Best In Air: Buffon

    Most Intimidating: Buffon

    Reaction Off The Line: Valdes

    Most Ruggishly Handsome: Buffon

On account that Buffon wins 3 awards he is voted my best keeper in Europe (from what I watch).

For the record I don't rate Casillas and I would consider myself a Madrid fan. Mind you he has a fine wife. Fair play I say.

Casillas, Handanovic, Hart, Reina and Neuer

Handanovic is 6/8, if memory serves, penalties saved in the past season.

It'd be interesting to see how many people that have put Neuer in their top 3 actually watch him on a regular basis.

IMHO the best keeper in Europe atm is Casillas, followed by Reina. Hart, VDS and Buffon would make up the top 5, in no paticular order.
