3 Internet - Compile a list of speeds!

So I know there is an entire thread on the disaster that is 3 internet. Someone suggested a protest and 3 sorted out his problem straight away.

But if there are people there still in a dispute with the service perhaps we could get some sort of protest. Not on the streets though. Why don't we go online and simply upload your link from speed test. Just posting the facts.

Did a test today from my house in Limerick city center using www.speedtest.net

I'm on the 3 wireless modem. Paying for 7mbs

Anyone else on 3 want to post?

Cheers for that. God I've never seen figures like that on mine! Still just about half of the 7mb I presume you're paying for? Are you obstructed by buildings or anything? You happy with your speeds?

Meteor seems fairly decent...only reason I went for three is that they have a wifi dongle that gives wifi to other computers in the house. I've complaints in about mine. Apparently I'm just under the .5mb limit. If you're over that then they say you are tied into your contract (over €450 more for me). Pretty disgraceful that they'd be happy to let you off if you're getting half a mb!

You've got terms for cancellation there. These speeds are barely useable..national coverage my arse! Despite hearing good things about meteor, I think I'm going to go get a landline connection.

Your not paying for 7Mb/s, the network is upto and i think your supposed to be getting a minimum speed of around 1Mb/s. (might be limited to NBS and sod everyone else)

This is mine for tonight, higher end of what i normally get around this time with it being up to three time faster in the am and afternoon.

    1310637623.png
I use a 2.5m USB cable to put my modem in the window, close to unusable if not.

I was quoted minimum speed of .5Mb Which is hardly acceptable! I was getting 2Mb from O2 and the sales staff (I know I know I fell for it), said that I would defo be getting more than that with them, and if I wasn't I should do a speed test and cancel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭downwithpeace

I've complained for speeds slightly faster then .5Mb/s, i wouldn't accept that and i let them know i wouldn't. Last time it turned out to be a contention issue and after a few angry phone calls i finally got some guy who spent a good 30 minutes on the phone with me to resolve the issue, he told me it was high contention and he would forward the issue to be sorted, week later it was.

Keep at them, they can offer 99.9% coverage all they want but they need to provide an acceptable service too.

Meteor have one of those mifi devices too.

I'm a similar scenario. I had meteor payg monthly but kept running out of data about 2 weeks in, so swaped to 3 billpay 30gb a month with the huawei router that broadcasts wifi around the house, since there is a few wifi enabled devices. It works but the reception or speeds are not as good as meteor =/ for my location. When the 3 contract is up I'll swap a meteor sim into the 3g router... + I had to place the router outside and the speed varies quite a bit but I average about 2mb which i find mostly acceptable.

Rather annoyed meteor uped their data limits and 3 also doubled their same bill pay data plan I signed up for 2 months before!

Anyways, here is my result right now. For some Reason my location is in Galway!? and the first result is usually a bit better than it is now considering the time of day, but my connection is the 3g router outside. 20m of a cat5 cable into my main router, and this laptop is connected via wifi... Can't wait till the contract is up to be honest, 3 is really the only viable "broadband" I can get unfortunately. Can't get any sort of fixed service living in Dublin, which is pityful.

Wish they cared. I've been on the phone to them a good bit. In one phone call today, that lasted 51minutes, I was transfered to five different people. 3 in india and 2 in the irish cancellation service. I was told I would be contacted after a max of 4 days, and that was 8 days ago. Customer service is a joke. Went in store, they don't have anything to do with me. I signed up in my college so I've nothing to do with them. What speeds are you getting now, and what provider?

This is an excellent thread about 3's speeds and shg101 compiled a nice little list of speed tests results in his post #11 . That thread relates specifically to the NBS but the actual service is the same (just different contract) for 3 Mobile Broadband.

I agree with -=al=- but I go a bit further and say if your getting 0.37Mbps at 11:30 at night I'd guess at peak times your connection might be unusable?

Do a few more tests during the day and if that is your lowest (0.37Mbps) then its sort of OK but not great.

God them Limerick and Tip speeds are unbelievably poor! I can't remember having internet this slow since dial up days.

Thats pretty terrible man. The hint is the comment it leaves under saying it's slower than 96% of Ireland.

Thats quite normal for 3, that speedtest was done around midnight when the contention starts to ease off. Stay up to 2pm in the morning and you might get better speeds :D

Then I'd take a guess that one of the limiting factors is you don't have LOS to the mast or are along way away.

    Whats your signal strenght like?

I get results like yours with zero to one bar.

    3 mile

OK then I'll go with contention, as I can get as good as that from a mast over 10miles away, in fact much better if I setup the dongle with LOS.

Three worked so i went went with them, credit where credit is due, they've given me little to complain about in recent times.

I know, but I don't get 3G indoors, I'm stuck on what GPRS (soon to be EDGE) can provide me. So while it works fine for me elsewhere, it's horrendously bad at home.

Pretty abysmal last couple of days or about 2 weeks, So I went onto the roof to see what the jazz was... I noticed it wasnt in the position that was giving it the best results... So must have gotten moved slightly in the windiest month in a while

but it seems to be back a bit better since

    1324945467.png

was only getting about 1MB recently but that's rather acceptable considering its fluxuations, I'll test it again now this evening when it will be maxed out... If it was like the speed above more I'd be more than happy

just a quick slightly tipsy edit of the day...

dont some tests this afternoon and got over 3mb download pretty much, ping varied a bit from 65-90 or so on diff irish servers... done a test in the height of congestion and got about 2mb... done a test there at 2am and got almost 4mb download...

this is all since i moved the router back into a favourabe position!

positioning really does count... I know location is a big factor, but even at that, pointing the router, usb device the right way makes a pretty big diff
