Chicken vs. Rasher and sausage

I was wondering out loud to my better half how healthy my daily diet was, wondering how I could possibly improve it.

The bone of contention that arose was my daily lunchtime snack- 2 slices brown pan- 3 sausage, 2 rashers, ketchup, butter spread. She reckoned that was ridiculous & not healthy- I would usually have a dinner in the evening meal.

I thought that the sandwich was healthy cos I grill the rashers and sausages. She reckoned grilled chicken would be better. Who is correct or how would I work out which had more calories as I've never done this? Or maybe we are both wrong? Thanks for any help.

rashers and sausage are both processed pork - not at all healthy although grilling is definitely better than frying. grilled chicken is better but get some salad in there as well to ramp up the health factor.

keep the rashers and sausages for a weekend treat.

i know the article is about breakfast but scroll down to the bit about processed meats and saturated fat.

Thanks for the help- I had a feeling I was gonna be the wrong one in this. I guess soups and salads are the way to go so. I might just have one last treat today so!

I don't think it's too bad if you get good quality, best to get it from the butchers where they make them up and put in actual meat rather than pig parts with pink colouring. I'd watch out for the ketchup more but that's just me, it has far too much crap in it for me, don't be lashing that on.

Ketchup is great! I know it's got a lot of salt and sugar but in moderate amounts its grand, if not good for you. AFAIK tomato is one of the only foods that actually becomes healthier the more processed it is. It's got lots of good stuff in it. I wouldn't be, as you said "lashing it on", but a reasonable amount is fine IMO.

Yeah, it's just not for me, it's really the sugar in it that's too much for my liking, most people I know would have food with there ketchup which is why I said not to lash it on. Also I found out a while ago there's something in tomatos that's great for the skin(helps prevents sunburn), I've been concidering eating tomato puree from the tube since then.

Griling sausages is over-rated, it barely makes a difference to them.
They are loaded with fat to begin the tiny amount it picks up in the pan makes them marginally heavier in calories.

The two slices of bread are prob the bulk of calories.
You can get rashers that are pretty lean, .3 or 4 would be equal to a slice of bread

grilled chicken is many times better

a small bit of ketchup is by no means the worrying thing there, nor butter.

That much be a mistake, as if brown is higher in Joules, it has to be higher in calories. i reckon it was supposed to be 231 calories.

So brown bread, higher in cals per 100g, and prob heavier per slice, so it's slightly worse than white. The positives like extra fibre are tiny amounts, and the main ingredients prob include white flour

Would the rashers not be ok if brought loose from a butchers, surely then they are just cut from the side of bacon and not processed? What do they do to prepacked rashers to make them processes, do they really add loads of crap ingredients to them too?

I could be wrong but I think they mainly just cure them in salt or brine, so if someone's trying to reduce the salt intake it'd probably be best to avoid them.

A couple of grilled rashers a week are fine in the grand scheme of things.
