The two worlds biggest deserts and yet very different from each other in climate.

If given an option to live on one which would you choose or feel more able to cope in and why?

Ocean, there would be more life in it you could try catching in order to live.

In the ocean I'm going to be living on a flotilla of some sort , like on an oil rig and the climate in the ..er Pacific would suit me more than the Sahara only one day I'm sure , a tsunami wave would come along and screw it all up .

wouldnt fancy a snake or scorpion? I think best bet would be to watch an episode of ray mears in the desert and him in the ocean. He could teach us how to survive in both and we could then narrow down our choices hmmm I feel like watching some ray mears now that I mention it.

Nah, a shark would kick a snacks ass (so to speak). I'd rather face a creature who i'm bigger than and can stand on than Jaws.

How is the ocean a desert? Maybe the bits near deserts on the land are but other than that...

My grandmother was brought up in a place in the Sahara which was six months away from 'civilisation' by camel, in her younger days, so as it's in the genes I'll go for the desert. :D

But why would you go for the desert? what makes it more appealing than the ocean?

The Sahara is just one big beach. You can go into the ocean anytime you like.

A few years at sea make fcuking anywhere more appealing

There is no drinking water in the ocean. You would be dead in a couple of days. In the sahara you have a better chance of finding a spring or oasis. Its a pretty easy decision.

Not true. When it rains you can catch it or open your mouth and drink to your hearts content. and lets face it its going to rain more at the ocean and you've a better chance of getting water than finding an oasis in the desert.

Then again if you were passing sellefield when it rains it probably would be a good idea not to go ahead have a drink.

To Quote the simpsons "water water everywhere, so let's all have a drink" :D

Why is this topic so full of simpsons references?

What is your definition of a desert to make the ocean a desert of water? Any I can find with a quick google refer to a lack of precipitation, which wouldn't apply to large areas of the ocean.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Sand in the sandwiches is the last straw :( ( and also the one that broke the camels back )

How we gonna get outta there with a camel who's not only got the hump but a broken back as well ? :D

I'd probably pick the Ocean, so long as it didn't turn into The Posideon Adventure.

A desert of water??? No it's not. Look up the definition of "desert".
You also didn't mention which ocean.........possibly because you don't realise that there are different oceans??
You gave the choice of the Sahara, which isn't even the driest desert.
So many things wrong with this thread.

Oh yeah, and someone who points out the blatent obvious is not a philosopher.

i'd go for ocean, you'd get feed up of making sand castles after 6/7 months.

The ocean is not a desert Im fairly sure that the air above an ocean has a fairly high level of humidity and depending on the area, rainfall. I think you mean the dry valleys region of antartica were it hasnt rained in over a million years, which is a cold desert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,862 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Camels are the ships of the desert. You could use one of them in the Atlantic.

Am I just going to be dropped in the middle of my choice with nothing or what? Do I get a boat if it’s the ocean or some kind of house if it’s the Sahara?

With zero survival skills I think I'd prefer my chances on the ocean (so long as I have some kind of raft or whatever).
    • You don't have to use energy walking through searing heat, you just have to lie there and hope you can survive for the amount of time it takes your raft to reach somewhere (though how long this might take, I've no idea)
    • There's more chance of rain over the ocean than in a desert, finding an oasis or a spring in the desert would be next to impossible and even if you get to one, unless you have something to transport a large quantity of water you're facing the same problems when you move on.
    • The temperature differences aren't as severe.
    • There is life all around you on the ocean. A fresh carcass might bob to the surface, you might be able to fashion some kind of trap or net etc.

If ya take the variables into consideration though its a tough choice, any storm on the water will almost certainly leave any small boat or raft you may have a wreck, there is more life around in the water but catching anything would be near impossible, your chances of drifting anywhere to land really depends on the currents and unless you know where you are or have navigation skills your basically stuck floating around at the Oceans mercery.

In the Desert you will find very little life, its so vast that an attempted walk out of the Desert will probably kill you, sandstorms will make visibilty almost zero.
