What kind of dog does she have, and puppy or adult?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

Maybe the Beta or Red Mills leader? What dog has she got?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 517 ✭✭✭moving_home

sorry should have said its a 2yr old Labrador

Red Mills Leader is a very reasonable price and a pretty decent food for the price you pay. Think it's around €40 per 15kg bag.

I have my lab on Gain Big Dog Adult, he's doing great on it. I pay €25 a bag.

My Dogs eat pedro gold they love it around 18 euro a bag.

thanks guys Will pass on the info!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

Try and get the best you can afford within your budget. The ones that were mentioned near the top of this thread would be a much better quality than Pedro Gold or Gain, so if you can afford that little bit better i would go with the likes of Red Mills Leader Supreme.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 517 ✭✭✭moving_home

Thanks Andrea – she is obviously looking to get the highest quality possible for the price but the budget won’t stretch to red mills leader as that is around €45 for 15kg bag. Will look at the beta range and what about the cheaper red mills – winner etc??

Anyone had any experience or advice with Happy Dog Natur-Croq??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭portgirl123

i have switched from Rc which was getting too expensive for me to whites dog food. It is €38 a 15kg bag and my dogs have never looked so good or pood so less. Never thought i would find a food that all my dogs liked and suited them and my purse.

Where do you source that portgirl? On the internet or in a pet shop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

Oh is it 45?? God, didnt realise it was that dear, sorry.

No i wouldnt go for the Winner one. Maybe try that Whites that Portgirl mentioned.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 517 ✭✭✭moving_home

Right having looked at the amounts to be fed I have narrowed it down to either the Whites or Premier High 5 from MaxiZoo as both cost the same per day to feed. Good quality red mills is more expensive as is Beta and I think both Whites & Premier are better value than Beta.
The Premier High 5 might win out as she lives beside a maxizoo so will be able to source this easily.

    Thanks for all your help.

Been talking to a few dog owners that have said they feed there dog on Natures Kitchen, it's made by vets and only sold in certain vets, apparently it has everything your dog needs and is only €30 for two 15kg bags. I'm going to try my two on it and see how they get on, but need to find out who sells it first!

Is it Natures Menu? Dont think theres a natures kitchen. I dont think you can get this in 15 kg bags as its all diff raw foods, maybe im getting mixed up but never heard of Natures Kitchen....

Anyone had any experience or advice with Happy Dog Natur-Croq??

I've used this and I was very pleased with it. Lovely coats, bright eyes, nice firm poo and, most importantly, no windy episodes of an evening :D

(I've also used HappyCat XL and found it to be excellent too (and we've historically been a Royal-Canin-Or-I'll-Have-The-Squits-On-The-Only-Rug-In-The-House household))

sorry should have said its a 2yr old Labrador
i dont know why she has to rely purely on bought dog food, i have jack russells and i found that when i fed them dogfood only, the let off gas and stank me out of my house, i now feed them potatoes, carrots and mince meat mashed , and or whatever meat i have left over from dinner i mix in plenty gravy and they love it, i try do keep it to home made as much as possible, and they love it, it is only in the past 20 yrs people started relying on bought dog food, i never saw my parents buy dog of cat food and we would always have two big dogs and a few cats, but i love my j russells, if she has neighbours who do not have pets, and she know them well, they might help by giving their leftover meat and veg from their dinners and so on, my sister always give me her left overs and i make nice dinners for them with it

Yeah it's definitely Natures Kitchen, when I got my last pup I was given a 15kg bag of puppy food. At the time the dog eat every last kibble.

Theres just nothing coming up when i search for it online and i would question the price of it too, as in its very cheap for 30 euro for 2 bags so i wouldnt be too sure on how good the ingredients are in it for that price...

Goat2 the dog doesn’t do too well with rich human food even with a little added into her kibble so my friend wouldn’t feed her a human food diet. Also I would be afraid that she wouldn’t be getting the correct balance of nutrients that she needs.

The dog isn’t doing too well on her current food so she is gonna get a bag of the Premier High 5 today as she wants to get started on a new food asap and get a bit of weight up as the dog looks a little skinny. She is then going to have a look at White’s and Natur-Croq as a more permanent solution (need time to get delivered if ordering off the net). Have her told how to wean the dog between foods over a week etc to avoid upset tummies.

Thanks again for all your help.

Yeah I thought the same my self when I first heard about them but the Family I bough my Rottie off done are big into their dogs and done some research into it and said it's great food, there two Rotties have been on it for some time and there coats were shiny, eyes nice and bright etc. I will try and source it and post the list of ingredients.

    It's actually a special promotion, €30 per 15kg + 1 FREE BAG.

Going to pick it up tonight.

Hi MH I use red mills winner for my 2 german shephards. It is the best food that i have found for the money. You need to be very careful to read the labels as there is a lot of rubbish on the market.
You can buy the red mills winner lots of places for 29 euro, woodies usually has it for 24.99.
    Hope this helps, good luck.
    Ollie:)

Thanks for mentioning Whites, looking into changing over myself now. Comparing ingredients it's nearly exactly the same as James Wellbeloved which Im currently feeding but cheaper. I know Iv always been one to say you get what you pay for as regards dog food so still a little hesitant to change over.

We recently changed our 2 dogs to Burns Complete (pork and potato flavour) €35 for 15kg which we buy from our vet (who recommended it). They love it and a little goes a long way as the feeding guideline is 100g of food per 10kg of dog per day. Our lurcher has been on steroids for 5 years because of his allergy itching and hasn't been scratching since we changed his food.

Theres no way you are paying 35 euro for a 15kg bag of Burns... Its at least 50-60 euro. Maybe its the smaller bag?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭toadfly

Ya I agree with andreac, I pay €30 for 7.5kg of Burns in my local vet.

I got 12kg of Barking Heads puppy food today in Petworld for the new pup for €36. There is €10 off a 6kg bag at the minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 kaner64

Sorry, you're right it was the 7.5kg bag. My apologies. They were previously eating Arden Grange which was the same price but they were eating twice as much of it I still think the Burns is quite economical.

Yeah it's still available and my dog's love it, and I have a very fussy bulldog that especially enjoys it which really shocked me :D

Not to sure if it's available in Longford, try ringing the vet mentioned above and see will they deliver or know a Vet around your area.

    Hope this helps..

Red Mills is a wheat based food which the cheaper the food the more wheat & over time the dogs starts to scratch excessively. My shepherd & lab both became allergic. The labs back blistered & turned pussy. Put them on Whites as it doesnt have wheat and they havent looked back since

Mine love <Spam> & we use the lamb, when I looked at their ingredients the lamb is the main thing and its human grade meat

<Removing name of a company that has been spammed by another user> - Admin

I am using RC at the moment for my lab/boxer mix. He is getting on fine on it. Not outstanding given the price, but no problems either. I am always wondering could I get him something better! I like the fact that Whites state that they use human grade meat. It seems like good value too...I'm just trying to find the catch :P

When I switched to <Spam>, I gave them a call. They were really good with their advise and when I queried the price, they told me the UK owners & themselves are dog owners and felt the price they paid for food was too much. When they looked for an alternative there was none so they developed their own. They also dont spend alot of money on advertising, they said if they did then the prices would have to go up. :)

totally agree with paula, the girl that deals with the sending of food and who gives out the advsie, who by the way is also called paula, is a lovely lady. just word of warning, dont make call if u in hurry as paula loves to chat, really nice lady.

food is ex, i was always a rc fanatic would buy nothing else but gave whites a try and would now use nothing else. placed a order this morning, for 15kg of senior/lite as one of my dogs is on a serious diet and paula advised against getting big bag as my doggie is near her target weight now. she said to get 2kg and when i use that if she aint hit her target she would send me rest out in sample bags as she didnt want me wasting my money. what other company would be thinking of customer instead of themselves. not many.

Thanks for the information PortGirl and Paula. :)

I emailed Whites and they got back to me already. They are going to send me out a sample. If all goes well with that then I'll probably give it a try.

I have a puppy red setter and is prone to bloating.

The vets we attend gave me a sample of hills pet science plan. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Ingredients: Mini Chicken and Medium Chicken (minimum Chicken 34%, Chicken and Turkey combined 50%): Ground maize, chicken and turkey meal, animal fat, digest, dried beet pulp, maize gluten meal, fish oil, potassium chloride, disodium phosphate, salt, L-tryptophan, taurine, vitamins and trace elements. Naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, citric acid and rosemary extract.

I personally wouldnt feed Hills to my dogs. My dog had a reaction to it and broke out in hot spots and i know other dogs that have had similar reactions to it too so its not a food i would recommend.
Alos, vets sell it as they get commission for selling it, so thats the reaosn they push it.

Thank you for this. I have been feeding her this for 2 days, as of yet I have not noticed a reaction. What food would you recommend for red setter pup who is prone to bloating? Is royal canin or james wellbeloved any good or should I order the whites online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭toadfly

I wouldnt feed Hills or RC either, they didnt cause a reaction like Andreac's dogs but I just dont think they are good foods especially considering the prices.

You could try Burns, thats what I have my two Yorkies & our foster dog on. I have the pup on Barking Heads puppy food. All good so far.

Check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com. I have my 7 month old lab pup on Orijen Puppy Food. Bought it in Petconnection Newry on Special offer.

For value and quality I go for Redmills leader. I wouldnt have a problem feeding one of the winner/pet Redmills but I'd definately supplement it with "people" food, but I do that anyway.:D

Saying that it also comes down to what the dog loves. My dad's dog turned his nose up at Orijin and wolfed down some Lidl food :D so ever since thats what he's gotten (along with scraps/bones/meat). He constantly gets complimented about his fantastic condition and he has never had any health problems!

    Oh, and good solid poop!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

    We feed this http://www.bewital-petfood.co.uk/belcando.html

We had trouble with Harleys anal glands for so long before switching to this. It's 50 for a 15kg bag and we buy it locally. Both of the dogs are in great condition and both a very active. Regular solid poos too.

Looking at whites though I'm thinking of giving it a try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭doggiewalker00

Its a personal choice I suppose,I feed Jameswelllbeloved, but my 3 are all smallish so wouldnt be eating as much as a Lab,generally the better quality the food the less you have to feed as thier are less fillers in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 517 ✭✭✭moving_home

op here just an update, the lab started on maxizoo premier high 5 about a month ago. doing great - putting on weight and poos are good.have also started my cocker on it and she is doing excellent aswell.
both dogs get alot of exercise so the 26% protein is doing them good but would need to bear that in mind if your dog doesn't get as much exercise.
