and what makes them so smart?

I'd have to say my brother - he gets a lot of the questions on that university challenge show right while I could watch the whole show and only get one right and thats if I'm lucky -

Some seriously intelligent people in my class in college, and by extension, in the faculty of the course. Some scarily intelligent people.

I like how you used the word smart. I don't really like the word 'intelligent' as it's so loaded.

I have loads of respect for multi-talented people - and not just academically. People who are smart but who are also handy and resourcefull get my respect more than a heady academic.

My dad. The man can talk about anything and can even reel of all the dates, facts and figures of whatever he was speaking about. I wish jhe'd write a book or something.

Unfortunately that brainy-box gene got stuck in the pipeworks the day he got jiggy with my mam and sowed the seed for all 5 of us :pac: Were a bunch of toothless simpleton banging pots off our heads for kicks in comparison. He must've been terribly bored with the lot of us.

Edit: I should say "days" and not "day"...quintuplets we are not!

Its human nature to think you're smart so I'm talking about somebody that completely blows you away -

Maybe its a mechanic you know that knows everything about cars,
maybe its your rocket science cousin that works for NASA or maybe its the old woman at the end of the road that could tell you everything about anything.

My Mam was definitely the smartest person I knew (I say was cos she passed away a few years ago).

She had no real formal education, like lots of people in Ireland she left school at 13! She pretty much educated herself and knew so much stuff about history, geography, english literature. I was on many a winning pub quiz team with her and she may as well have been on the team on her own.

Cliff Clavin - see below for proof
    - Everyone is the Swiss Army owns a Swiss Army Knife. That's why no one messes with Switzerland.

    - If you were to go back in history and take every president, you'll find that the numerical value of each letter in their name was equally divisible into the year in which they were elected. By my calculations, our next president has to be named Yellnick McWawa.

    - If memory serves, the umbilical chord is 90% postassium.

Both of my PhD supervisors... Unbelievably intelligent, one was the former head of the department I'm in and the other is the current head as well as being a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

How much of that is memorisation, and how much demonstrates true intelligence?

Genuine question, I don't know how accountancy exams are structured. I do have a friend who came top-10 in the country one year and he's probably of above average intelligence, certainly not terribly clever academically.

I know a lad from home who's neck is bent permanently from studying with his head resting on his hand...went to oxford and did some obscure degree

Met a Chinese girl and taught himself mandarin so he could converse in her tongue.

Opened a paper one day and there he was standing behind the queen at some diplomatic meeting...turned out he got a job as the Queen's advisor in china...brains to burn but boring as fcuk to talk to...

Depends on what sense of smart you mean, book smart? Street smart? Life Smart?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,762 ✭✭✭jive

Lecturer - head of department, founded 2 companies.

Mother - runs her businesses to a tee, can never recall her being wrong about anything with the exception of anything to do with computers. Old people and computers lololol

Roommate who was rough around the edges - knew so much crap, he was an expert on everything yet one of the laziest people i've ever met. my mind is still blown. he named every capital city in europe and every state in america on the spot when we thought of something we could ask him about sitting around bored one night, lunatic; Yerevan - who knew that was a real place? :pac:

so hard to know as someone with one facet of intelligence will always stick out to you but intelligence is ofc multi-faceted. We all know people like that whose college grades scream intelligence but they are frustratingly deficient in other areas, people who are bound by logical thought and lack imagination. I went to college with a lot of sciencey 'smart' people but read some of their written work and they are just not able to verbalise their understanding. One girl in particular stands out to me and I would consider extremely intelligent as I knew that she genuinely had to put very little effort into her work to achieve great results. The academic staff would be up there too.

I know it's not Naikon at least. There was a chap in my year that has consistently kicked the **** out of everybody else academically. Far above a 1.1 without a shadow of a doubt. Bar a few others. Fair dues. An early memory went something like this:

Me: What did ya get in teh Maths mid test? I got 70%
    Einstein: 99%
    Me: :O

    Respect...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,751 ✭✭✭Saila

being smart or clever is different to being intelligent. Being intelligent means you are good at remembering things [most people dont give a **** about usually] wheras being smart is using that knowledge and coming up with something smart or clever :p
